I recently got asked to audition for a roll as Gladys Bentley. Bentley was a celebrated pianist and singer in Harlem in the 1920s who was famous for performing in tuxedos, and singing saucy songs about dating women. She referred to herself as a lesbian and married a woman in the 1920s. Later, she identified herself as someone who "inhabited that half-shadow no-man's land which exists between the boundaries of the two sexes."
I see Bentley as a non-binary person. Through the songs she writes it definitely seems that Bentley played around with whomever she pleased, sexually fluid and open.
This is my audition tape for a New York indie film that unfortunately won't be able to add me to their casts due to covid-19 restrictions. As of the date that this is published, there is a 14 day quarantine in New York for any persons that enter the state. Please be aware. Ya need to mask up!
