How much bait do you need to catch crab? | Stabicraft on the Sound
This week I set out to see how much bait you need to catch crab. After using cut bait that had far less meat on it than a single chicken leg my theory was you do not need much. To put my theory to the test I headed back out to the Hat Island area of Puget Sound and dropped two crab pots. One stuffed as full as I could get the bait bin, the other wtih only two chickent legs. Which one do you think performed better? Leave your predictions and thoughts below! Thanks for watching.

My last trip out for crabbing I ran into a problem, I forgot my bait in the truck. With no time to return to the dock I diceded on using cut bait for crab. I know the crabs love chicken legs, but would the reamains of a filleted flounder drawn them in? Watch and find out.

Does crab pot line lenght matter? Today we test the theory that using shorter lines, which will result in a more vertical pot retrieval and less dragging of the pot, will deliver better results and crab retention.

This week on Stabicraft on the Sound. Since we're nearing the end of the 2021 summer season we spend 24 hours crabbing Puget Sound. 18 hours by dropping the crab post overnight, and the reaming six hours to retrieve them and them drop the several times until time to head in for the day. The results of the overnight drop were less than anticipated, and the remainder of the day didn't get much be...
Stabicraft 2050 Supercab from 41MPH to full stop!

This week we decided to find out how fast the Stabicraft 2050 Supercabe can go from 41 MPH to full stop! Watch as we run it up to speed twice and then cut the throttle to idle. Don't try this yourself unless you're braced and ready and your passengers are too! Also any loose items like coolers tend to relocate themselves when performing a full speed to closed throttle stop. I've never needed to...

Today we took out the Stabicraft 2050 Supercab to find the top speed with a Honda 150 and a four blade prop. The Stabicraft gets up to speed quickly with the four blade prop at the cost of a little top end speed. In the past with the 3 blade prop the fastest I ever saw was about 44-45 MPH on glass smooth water. The Puget Sound wasn't quite that smooth today. It was the smoothest I've been out o...

Thank you @vardanunez4467 I appreciate it!
I got me a new to me north river Seahawk, I live in Olympia, and have never fished in the sound! I’ve had other boats, and usually fish the upper Columbia. I can’t wait, because I purposely bought a well used boat, which I can take out with no fear or worries about the cosmetics of my boat. I wish I would have figured this out along time ago! I can’t wait to get out there. BTW, I’m a farmer, and the summer has been busy. That’s why I’m taking advantage of this weather, to get my boat ready to go. I don’t know if I’ll make it the season or not, cause I have a lot of work coming up, but I’ll be just a hitch up away to the trailer next year. Great videos! Can’t wait to keep learning!
Thank you @jeremyc9229 , I agree on the well used aluminum boats! Putting the first, second, and third ding in mine were all painful experiences. Now those dings are like dings on an old truck, they all tell a story! Plus my boat is more for hard use that sitting and looking at, I may wash it again someday though.
I did that the other week and did the same thing.
It worked out really well and made me quetstion how much bait do you really need to catch crab?
@StabicraftontheSound we were out for about 5 hours and did have to replace it once. I got some bait hooks to give them something to munch on but I think the chicken, frozen fish remain and fatty cut are good for the bait boxes
Aren't pots supposed to run sunup to sundown only?
Hi @TheRealKRUE , thanks for the question. Where I'm crabbing they have to be out by one hour after sunset on Mondays, which is the end of the weekly crabbing slot. Per WA state: Port Susan/Everett - Area 8-2 Marine Area 8-2 - Ports Susan and Gardner Status: LIMITED SEASON Days open: Thursday - Monday only Season dates: Open from July 1 through September 2, Thursdays through Mondays only. (Tuesdays and Wednesdays are closed.) Statewide gear rules (crab, shrimp, crawfish) Report derelict fishing gear NOTE: All crab fishing gear must be removed from the water by one hour after sunset on the last day of any fishing period. Crab fishing gear may not remain in the water on closed days.
Is there something mechanized in the pot, what are the high pitched whirring noises?
Those are boat motors
@Waldo1982 is correct @dmbwa , at 20-30 feet deep the sound from the boats in the area get picked up be the GoPro's even though they'r in a water tight case! I'll be dropping the pots in a deeper location soon and will find out if the sound fades as the depth increases. Thanks for the question!
You are correct! Also, when I pull anchor it gets picked up on sound as well. Thanks for the reply!
Here in New Jersey, 18 inches minimum.
Thanks for the comment @scottwilliams5503 , that 18" on the pot dimensions?
That's gps not radar
Correct, I do not have radar yet, only a chart plotter that uses GPS. I is better than nothing in heavy fog, but does nothing to show you where all the boats are that have engines at full speed! I'm hoping to add actual radar within the next year! Thanks for the comment.
After 2 years, then after this video maybe years again😅
Hi Reggie! You're one of my longest subscribers. Lets just say I sure hope the next few years go much better than the last few. ;) I'm planning to post at least once a week and already working on next Fridays post. Question for you, my daughter says she'd just as soon watch the raw underwater footage. Think other subscribers/viewers might enjoy just watching what happens underwater? Hope you're doing well!
BAD types of traps!! They all got out! They need to co.e straight up and not on an angle too
@juliemanarin4127 Thanks for the comment. Seeing what is actually happening to the pots on retreival was eye opening. I couldn't believed one physically tipped over, then drug along the bottom until it was under the boat. I think I may try running lines that are shorter so when I retreive them it will be a more direct upward pull and less of the side pull and see what happens.
Glad to see you posting again! How is the Stabi holding up after a couple years? I’ll finally be pulling the trigger on a 1550 this coming winter.
@chasebrown5532 Thank you! The Stabi is a tank! Other than weathering it really doesn't show any wear. May have the rear enclosure rebuilt in a year or so, and a bunch of the snaps for the eclousre have failed, other than that it just keeps going. And I'm still loving it. Someday I may upgrade to one of the larger models but for now, with just me going it, it's more than enough.
@@StabicraftontheSound Let me know if you'd like a hand with that! I sew outdoor equipment (waders, tents, kill bags, etc). I have all of the equipment to install KAM snaps, but alternatively I would suggest looking into something called Keder Awning rope/track from Sailrite. KAM snaps are not technically marine grade, Awning rope/track is the marine grade solution for KAM snaps. I would be happy to do it at cost (ie. you pay for material) in exchange for some time on the water on a stabi. This will be my first aluminum boat purchase and I am nervous to jump in without spending any time on the water first.
@chasebrown5532 I may take you up on that offer. Today's the last day of crabbing until fall/winter season opens up, so I'll but shooting more footage of Stabi related things and general fishing for a while. Might be cool to film one showing what it takes to add an enclosure on one. I pulled mine off to bring home and clean up thinking it was going to be nice out for another month. It's rained every time I've been out since then.
@@StabicraftontheSound Once the season cools down we can meet up and take a look at potential options as well as modifications to the existing system in place. Just let me know and we can find a way to exchange numbers/email.
Seems like looping them to a cleat before pulling them really upsets everything. Could have crab escape (as you experienced) or get the pots tangled. My preference, which comes from shrimping, is to start pulling in as smoothly and continuously as possible once I touch the float.
Straight up
@juliemanarin4127 Thanks for the commment, I replied on your other post.
@solarshooter Thanks for the comment. Something upset them, thats for certain, seeing was believing. I think I'm giong to try carrying multiple length lines and not have as much slack in them. Less slack so less angle when they're pulled. I couldn't believe the one pot actually turned itslef completely over then drug along the bottom.
What was that line at the end of the video for?
@donovononeill3363 , thanks for the question. Had to go look it up again myself, seemed to recall it being associated with the speedometer, and it is. Here's a link to the forum post where I found the info: www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/threads/2010-bf-150-hp-the-small-rubber-hose-that-run-down-the-outside-of-the-lower-unit.386691/#:~:text=It%20is%20your%20speedo%20tube,have%20another%20pickup%20for%20it.
Great New Zealand made boat
I fully agree! Traveling to the Stabicraft plant and ordering a boat custom made for me would be a dream goal in life. Thanks for the comment.
BTW crabs dont like new pots they smell like paint not the sea. you have to compare 2 used pots to be fair.
Interesting! I'd never heard that before. I may put it to the test in a future video to see what happens. Thanks for the comment.
once you have radar you will never go without, stay safe, thanks ! Old sail boat 4sure
I can only imagine! I'm hoping in the next year to add radar on to mine. Still have to go slow in the heavy fog to dodge the trees in the water around hear, but at least I wouldn't be worried about getting mowed down by another boat at full speed! Thanks for the comment!
maybe talk little about how she handles, ruff seas etc... fuel mileage and or things like how much weight , do you think highly of the brand, if you look at other boats, yours built like a tank, some of us really like that.... thanks for your review and tight lines....
@kevinmason3141 thanks for to comments and suggestions! Those are some great ideas for future videos. I think once crabbing and the fishing seasons I plan to film are over I will take them and make vidoes based on your input, so thanks again!
ya left the dock with 1/4 tank of fuel?
Yes, not ideal I know, but when the farthest I might go out is less than 10 miles, and I've got 10 gallons of fuel, the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 rule still applies at 4-5 mpg. As I mentioned in another reply to you, I may do a video on the MPG with the 'little' stabi in rough weather. Thanks again for your comments!
At 13 minutes it sounds loud - water banging the hull. Are your pontoons foam filled or just air ?
Hello @WTF00007 , No, mine are not foam filled. I've gotten used to the sound and it's actually kind of relaxing now, like a white noise in the back ground! Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for a video that includes audio. I have been searching for a video with actual sound for longer than I should have had to. Big bonus that you are also in the PNW :)

havent posted in a few years. Hows the boat. It's my dream boat
@JamesBerkey , I'm still loving it! While I haven't filmed and posted in a while, I have been out a few times for personal relaxation. The Stabicraft has never let me down or made me feel unsafe!
I'm over on Vancouver Island. This is my dream boat!
@JamesBerkey, you're not too far away from my marina, if you plan to ever be down in this area let me know. If you'd like to go out I'd love to film a viewers take on the boat and post it unedited, your straight opinion on what you feel it's capable of handling.
What gauge wires are you using for your battery cable, and other cables?
That's a good qustion, they were all in when I picked it up. Now I'l lhave to take a look. I'm guessing 2 or 4 based on memory for the battery to the starter. Slightly smaller for everything else.
U already 9 minutes into the video and you still haven't put a trap in the water
Thanks for the input and comment. I'm trying to up my editing game and make sure I get to the point as quickly as possilbe!
What’s the mpg ?
At full speed, the digital display shows about 3 mpg. If I run a slower pace, around 30ish MPH, it goes up to 5-6 MPG at best in smooth water. If it's really rough out, and I'm running slow, say 10-12 MPH max, it's around 7-9 MPG. This fall between summer and winter crabbing season I'll try and shoot a video showing the different speeds to MPG ration as reported in the electronics. Thanks for the comment, and stay tuned for video proof of my writen answers.
I recognize the sound of those chains hitting that stand. Adjustable with the chain. I have same pair of stands. I use for fiberglassing and workbench.
Thanks for the comment. They're a very inexpensive little stand and very useful aren't they!
@@StabicraftontheSound Yeah I love them

Have you ever run the Stabi out to Victoria? Or up the coast to Bellingham?
Thank you for showing us how this boat handles in the Puget sound. I am a bit further South of you, but have been visiting Boat Country to check out the Stabis for a couple months now. I’ve been saving relentlessly to make it happen, but still another year out before pulling the trigger. Do you have any experience with a 1550 or 1850 on the Sound? I’m curious if they are just as confidence inspiring as your 2050 or if I will feel confined to the calmer days.
Hi. How long u had the Honda. Had any problems. Fitting a 75 to a fibreglass 4.7. Thanks
I had to replace temperature sensors when it started reporting it was running hot, before it had even had a chance to warm up. Other than that only routine maintenance in almost 250 hours.
@@StabicraftontheSound Thanks for that did it have many hours on Sounds like other than that pretty happy overall
Nice video in rough conditions. Gives us a real world view of what it is really like. For a 20 foot boat the Stabi handles it well. No way would you get me in another 20 foot aluminum boat, in those types of conditions. Thanks. Subscribed.
Thanks 👍
37 knot wind would sink any normal fishing boat on Lake Erie on the eastern basin. I know the camera doesn’t do waves respectable as to their size. I saw 37 knots and was looking for 10 fters. This boat looks like it ran pretty good in that water. Stayed nice and level front to back. Lake Erie is just a freak of nature. Over 2000 shipwrecks in that lake. Mostly due to wind and huge waves.
Out here winds and waves can vary by the hour. Especially in the winter months!

This is a blatant misrepresentation. The big pot will cost you 3 times the prices of one of your "cheap" traps. Maybe explain this to your viewers
I didn't price out the old trap before I filmed that one. I did notice just yesterday that the $20 trap is now $28 at WalMart! That kind of inflation on the older trap would put it around $180 after tax in todays dollars. Insane increases in only a few years.

You're welcome, I hope this helped. I'm getting ready to post my 6 year review in about a week, it's still all positive.
two years later and that walmart promar pot is $50 😳 😳
My local WalMart had some back in stock yesterday, first I've seen this season, and they were currently $28. Still a huge increase over $20.
Enjoyed your video. You might want to check the math on the final score. My calculator says 5 keepers for the $20 pot.
Thanks! :)
