Ask a Therapist Series: How to show our partner our progress in recovery? [2.6]
Allowing someone to see all the parts of you can be the scariest thing someone ever does. It is often human tendency to want to prove they are worthy or require someone to show evidence to feel safe enough in a relationship. Rachel Denton, our expert therapist, answers this question submitted by a listener and gives real life examples for how honesty brings greater intimacy, trust, and connection in a relationship.
Rachel grew up in Portland and came to Utah for school. She graduated from the University of Utah with her masters in social work. Rachel worked with different agencies that specialize in pornography and addiction issues, including Fight the New Drug, until she had her adorable baby girl and decided to focus on her private practice. She is also on the board for Reach 10, the non-profit that makes this podcast possible.
In this episode:
-Showing progress through action.
-Honesty leads to true freedom and choice.
-You always have the choice to be seen and to stay.
-Honesty and accountability build a solid foundation.

I don't understand why he chose to address criticism in such a defensive tone, responding as if they were attacking him personally. He was clearly convinced his theory was correct, which completely undermines his objectivity. That doesn't mean he was wrong, just that he was openly biased. I personally agree with most of his conclusions, but there is much more research to be done before anyone should be asserting this or that as proven fact.

When I was a child internet was still on its pioneer years, at least in the latin american country I come from. I was born in 2000. I remember being playing online games with my cousin and my brother and a window popping up. I don‘t remember what was on it, but later that day we commented it to our parents laughing and yelling „haha it was crazy, a girl was eating a giant poop!“, we were surprised, and at the same time laughing about the ridiculous content. Now I know it was probably an Ad of a porn site, figuring oral sex.

I agree… I don’t believe in the DSM… one of the reasons it makes doing my work with people difficult. I don’t want to give everyone a diagnosis in order for insurance to pay! People need help! Be wary of buzz words such as narcissist… ploys to boost industry. Porn addiction exists. I also see that you can have an addiction to anything (watching the news, sports, coffee, etc) if you are experiencing symptoms and cannot go without.

this man, this man. RIP. Porn or rather internet porn, PMA P0rn M4sterbation 0rgasm is a terrible addiction and you know it, you. its likely you are like everyone else and struggle to stop yourself. It makes you mentally anxious, it's another drug. It's very hard to stop, but once you quit, after a period of struggle.. you become new, you become free and happier and able to muster the courage to go achieve goals. It's miraculous how much quitting porn has changed my mental health. Im not religious btw. im just trying to share my opinion, feel free to disagree but even if there is a small percentage of people that benefit from PMO or internet tube Pron, it doesn't outweigh the negative effects against the majority of society and our children. It is a quiet taboo yet so normalised at the same time, its really messed up the more you think about it, its a huge experiment gone wrong

What a great video. This reinforces my need to completely stop masturbating to ANYTHING on my phone whether it’s porn or just pictures of women on dating sites, and the need to complete quit and not just do it intermittently. The hard part is that I’m not willingly doing it intermittently, it’s the urges that are caused by my brain trying to open new pathways (which is great!) but causes me to be more sensitive to stimulus or stressors. Amazing video. Amazing that intermittent use can actually cause marginally worse symptoms than consistent use. Just reinforces the need to turn away from this for good.
