Daniel Hines' 101st ABN 2/327th INF. Vietnam Color Footage
Переглядів 1,5 тис.6 років тому
My great uncle Daniel Hines' footage he took back in Nam, He was with the 101st ABN 2/327th Infantry and saw combat from mid 1966 till about late 1968
w o w what a lame presentation , he has the long table and the gear and he's using books he should have gotten rid of the books and unfold the field gear and lay it out on the table and lift them up and show them in the air with the lights shining on them , maybe i should have given him more time but dude does not come across as an ex military oh well im rolling out
why did the Waffen SS units in the eye'talian theater adopt the eye'talian army camouflage uniforms
Because there was oodles of the stuff found in warehouses! When Italy surrendered, in 1943, a ton of different types of material was taken and used for uniform manufacture all over Germany - for example the steel grey Officers quality wool cloth that you often see in SS officers' uniforms and caps. The camo, used by Italy, was also made use of and the HJ division, formed late in the war, was alloted the camo as there was little else available at that time. They were the main users, but photos also show Army units occasionally wearing odds and ends of it.
I hope you are still active in the hobby!
Best camo for most not urban terrain????
Bigfoot definitely knows
there is 100% no best camo depending on where you are your camo can differ depending where you are
@@venomi6862 VC Forces supposedly found the Americans camouflage funny and useless did more towards giving away positions then hiding them
Great video! I’d love to see a similar video on helmet covers.
Question, i see reenactors with smocks and their cuffs are rolled in, and ive seen original photographs of it as well. How common was that?
500!!!!!???!!! BETTER BE FROM WW2
by hand i understand. but i need proof its not sending them off to be done
'foliage hoops'....I wondered what they were
A Modern Cut Smock - like from Arktis UK - in those Oldskool German Camo Patterns would be a Dream! Never understood that "No collar" and No Hood approach on the German Smocks
The sumpftarn smocks have hoods, well some of them
There was often no collar because the garments were designed to be worn over the uniform tunic and the collar of that would show, along with the wearer's rank etc.
@@robertstallard7836 understood- good explanation - but i still prefer a Smock with a hood an Collar - lets assume those were the first smocks ... best regards
You have a matching hairstyle at least.
Great video where did you ordered that from?
At The Front
Do you know how common it was to see a oakleaf/blurred edge tunic?
Hi I’m curious I see palm camo a lot but I never understood why there was a variation with light colors (the one you showed in the video). I tried to research it but I couldn’t find anything about it. Do you know anything about the palm variant. Also great video 👍.
Colors always varied. It was all dependent on how the dyes would mix, set, and finish. But they always stayed greens, browns, and blacks.
@@TheReenactorsGuide ah ok, thank you for informing me 😁
It depends on being paratroopers or not
@@Mr.Skeleton. what
Were there any shoulder boards on the dot 44 tunic? as I know only earlier ones had shoulder boards, right?
First model ones did, they got removed in a later run produced.
@@TheReenactorsGuide thank you for answering , last question ,did they wear dot44 tunic with crusher visor cap?
@@yusufbricks855 sometimes. Depends on the rank of the soldier. Usually above Uscha. could hypothetically wear dots and a crusher, i’ve seen probably 4 photos of guys in Dots and a crusher.
Only the first runs got shoulder boards until they made sleeve ranks for the camo uniforms . Makes sense cause you want the camoflage effect at all . Sleeve rank made in Green and matched the pea dot . Oakleaf was earlier camo . Pea dot came in 1944 and was meant to be an all season camo pattern . Greetings from Germany
Very good camo collection. What do you think about buying atf ''SECONDS'' zeltbahn is it worth or better to wait for normal ones . Ps planetree 5-6 zelts will be in stock soon :PP
Seconds usually have missing button holes and unaligned buttons both are easy fixes imo with the right tools.
it is worth it , i bought 4 Zeltbahn and mad ea whole tent . looks totally stunning ! If you buy Zeltbahn only chose one distributor to make sure they fit . I got mine from Nestof , Outstanding quality
Its a shame you don’t upload video anymore I hope you are all right
I’m perfectly fine, just a lack of proper recording equipment. I don’t have any fancy cameras for recording so my 32gb IPhone won’t cut it lol.
@@TheReenactorsGuide Just to clarify is it the 'M40 Overprint' from SMWholesale?
@@erwinrommel4229 It’s their earlier variant. The non-overprinted.
@@TheReenactorsGuide oh okay, thanks.
You seem to know a lot about the differences between inked and dyed camo. So does one take a lot longer to fade than the other and more expensive to make? I notice a lot of bdu military uniforms seem to be printed (is that inked?) onto a white base fabric. When they wear they begin to look white instead of if say they used a olive drab (dyed?) base fabric it fades and more olive drab comes through. Sounds like it takes much more work and time and expense to dye camo than to ink print it. Is the German tropentarn and flecktarn uniforms and smocks dyed because they look pretty good. US marpat uniforms look cheap digital print on white fabric to me
Inked fabric usually tends to rub off exposing the white. Dyed fabric does not do this. It remained dyed but of course will have highlights due to wear points.
Know it's been a year and that's basically necro'ing this, but yeah. Best way to test is get some el cheapo airsoft brand camo, preferably a not so common pattern and actual gear. Having a bag from Invader Gear (aka Airsoft gear brand) some of the parts on it that are in contact with the body started fading fast and going towards white instead of the colour just going more muted gradually. Used this backpack mostly for hiking or as my bag for going airsoft. But in two hikes the part touching my back started wearing out. I guess you do indeed get what you pay for hahaha
Cool vid man but I find it hilarious a guy who is color blind would be so obsessed with camo lol. Go figure
I’m barely colorblind lol. But it really is like 1 shade of green.
Would you recommend a blurred edge m42 smock made by atf ??
Would you recommend a splinter camo smock of a kind of washed out brown/beige that I've seen recently? I don't know the exact colours, but it seemed like a pretty standard Heer/Fallschirmjäger smock that I could use in most units
Check out FJWerke
I can't find the dot 44 trousers on their website
Nice you got a nordhaus smock as well 👌🏻 I got his M38 Lateral smock and his variegated Leaf helmet cover and one of his veils.
My father was B 1/327 Jan 67 to Jan 68. Glad to find this, thank you
Who makes the oak leaf M42 smock?
ATF
I must point out at this point that ATF do some of the best reporos you can get. If you doubt this go to his page and he'll gladly explain at length the whats and wherefores of why he has to do what he does. I've never had a single issue with his kit and i have to pay cost because i'm in the UK.
100% correct. ATF is the most accurate reproducer out there. All his product is backed with data, research and experience. The people that whine about ATF have never gone to his website to read up on the effort the put into their product.
Your M38 looks crispy & unused. Go roll around in the mud on a rainy day.
My M38 Palm was my first smock I ever bought, it has seen mud, rain, snow and sunshine. I got it covered with mud before then next event all of it washed off with rain. I’ve since upgraded it for a Nordhaus 1/2 M38. Same with my M42 which is now a Nordhaus 5/6 M42.
Waffen ss Camouflage are not dirty in ww2, go look original pictures
That looks like an anorak!
Cool collection where did you buy the face Thing
Nordhaus
@@TheReenactorsGuide but i cant buy it why
I ran across a used blurred edge type 1 .. looks highly original. I black lighted the threads no floureces . It's got a repair with a piece of SS cloth on backside. Wish I knew a honest trustworthy place to send it to be checked out.
That’s cool. There’s lots of places.
If you email me photos I can probably try to authenticate my email is elderbrooma@gmail.com
Will anyone reveal the secret of who this Nordhaus is?! I dug up the Internet and not a single hint of products from Nordhaus!!! Give someone a link to it! please
Nhtk.shop or look up ‘nordhaus’ on facebook.
Hi! A very good review of the products ! I was very interested in Nordhaus Planetree 5/6 "M40" ... I heard about him for the first time. Can you tell me where you can buy Nordhaus Planetree 5/6 "M40" or a link. Sorry for my English I'm from Belarus
Did you ever get ink pooling on your camo? If so, how did you smooth it out?
Just received my ATF Palm type 1 smock. Good stitching, nice artwork and solid. The only drawback is the water proofing or whatever they’re using. It feels like a rubber coated jacket.
I recommend using fabric softener and a hot hot wash cycle (whites cycle) it’ll help soften it. Just allow it to hang/air dry
Do you have a link to where I can buy a Nordhaus smock?
His stuff is very limited.
@@TheReenactorsGuide yes, did some digging. A Dillon smock is virtually unobtainable. Congratulations on owning one.
@@billb89 they're not unobtainable, just have to be in the Facebook group and he gives a heads up when they're coming out. After that it's just waiting and hope you're faster than other people. Just got my 2nd smock a few days ago
How do I buy from Nordhaus
Limited runs & drops mainly.

Looks 👍
Nice collection Very good camo reproduction
Thank you!
Off topic, though the Germany Army used more earthtone colors later in the war, it is general accepted that their vehicles were gray. Now I know they came out of the factor as such, but was their any reasoning for using gray tones as the base paint? You do see gray in wooded areas and from a distance, gray does blend in.
Grey blends in pretty much anywhere. The absence of color makes it stand out less to the eye because cone receptors aren't activated
They had a grey and brown pattern early on in Poland etc. That was later simplified to solid grey in ‘40-42. Tan was used as the base from ‘43 and units were supposed to add green and brown paint on top to fit the local environment. Grey was definitely considered a camouflage colour at the time and had been in use for uniforms since at least the early 19th century. Most of their enemies also used green tanks, so there could be some identification reasons for choosing grey. At least in infantry uniforms, they considered looking distinct from your enemies important.
Great video, sir ! I’ve got one of ATF’s old “ in house made “ blurred edge smocks I purchased in 1999 or 2000 and after 20 years of on and off re-enacting service it looks really good. Normally I re-enact late war FJ ….and that’s another camo garment ( Splinter B ) that only has like 2 or 3 good , accurate reproduction options. I’ll usually try and get the best reproduction smocks and strip them down and overhaul it, replacing and adding things such as original buttons and snaps , thread loop reinforcing, original insignia, mismatch camo pocket flaps and loops , dye tinting and other small details. The end results are striking at times….usually not resembling the “ off the shelf “ reproduction item I started with but instead looking much more original and unique.
I’m thinking about doing some hand applied fabric dye to my SS smock. Any brand you can recommend would be much appreciated.
@@billb89 I use something called PROCION MX dye. It’s a reactive dye so you’ll need to acquire Soda Ash too. It’s pretty good stuff….just experiment around on a piece of scrap until you get what you’re looking for, as far as shade and darkness. You can also add dye thickener as well. Hope that helps 🙂
@@kurtwk Thank you.
Very nice! What unit(s) are your impression for?
Mainly 12th ‘HJ’ & 6th ‘Nord’
Thanks for sharing. This really helped me visualize it.
Great video. WHere can you find these types items on Instagram? :)
Just found this, do more camo pleasees 😁
At least it's not from Wish
Couple of questions: how baggy are the smocks? At the front says they fit like trash bags, while SMW has size large 38-42, which seems a closer fit: and would you recommend smocks as outerwear for hunting?
Super baggy. NH ones are chest size 56 about. I’d say for SMW order an XL for ATF order a large. Smocks were originally very large and only one size. If I hunted i’d wear mine for hunting.
@@TheReenactorsGuide sorry but not sure what NH is, and I think i would like it a bit closer fit, but I guess that would come with the clothes I wear under it? Thanks for the quick response!
@@ethanfranklin5258 NH means nordhaus. But smocks were mean’t to be worn over the gear, clothing, etc. so take that into account they’re HUGE
@@TheReenactorsGuide ok thanks! I think I'll definitely be getting either an oak or palm camo from SMW

It’s nice to see videos like this popping up on UA-cam. Good job man!
The colors on at the fronts camo has always bugged me. It's still better than most. I think smwholesale has the best color wise.
Agreed, colors are a big thing but since originals varied so much it’s within the realm of possibility, can’t say the same for what I heard of the newest runs.
Cool shirt
Can you wear a t-shirt under this?
