Ähnliche Flugleistungen erforderten bei der zur gleichen Zeit entwickelten General Dynamics F-111 eine deutlich aufwändigere Konstruktion unter Einsatz von Schwenkflügeln. Die TSR.2 kam ohne dieses Merkmal aus, war aber dennoch zu Starts auf kurzen Pisten von 600 Metern Länge in der Lage.
The design was very advanced for the time and included details such as Doppler radar, inertial navigation system, moving map display and terrain following radar. Similar flight performance required a significantly more complex design using swivel wings for the General Dynamics F-111, which was developed at the same time. The TSR.2 did not have this feature, but was still capable of take-offs on short runways of 600 meters in length.
