Captain Phill Reviews
Приєднався 21 лис 2020
Hi Everyone,
In this channel I'll be reviewing books from my library of over 3,000 books, mostly around ships, shipwrecks, planes, trains, military, history and architecture. In addition to my book reviews I'll also be reviewing those books that explore the lesser known shipwrecks from around the world.
Books will be scored according to their readability, layout and overall quality. As this is mainly (but not exclusively) maritime themed channel, the score will be graded as Captains Hats:
5 Captains Hats is a must buy!

Thank you ❤
Bagnasco and De Toro are some of my favorite authors for the Regia Marina! Really the best sources in English on the subject! Edit: I love Brescia too! My first book on the Regia Marina was the Mussolini's Guide, an excellent starting point.
That was a fair review. He included some photos from my collection (never previously published), and got my name wrong in the credits.
I'm told volume 2 will come in March 2025 and will, using eyewitness accounts, rewrite the sinking. I greatly anticipate volume 2.
Ditto here, very much looking forward to it!
The 2010 and 2015 editions are out of print and only available 2nd hand for a lot of money so this makes the story available to newcomers.
Exactly, that's why I tailored the review for first time readers
I very clearly remember seeing both those magnificent ocean liners at their docks in New York!!!
What an amazing site it must have been! Those two sleek white hulls docked at the pier.
Thanks for the recommendation, I had no idea this book was out there! I’m gonna try to find a copy right now.
Happy Reading! It's a great account of the Georgic's interesting life.
I'm interested as to what he says about Titanic, Empress of Ireland, and Lusitania. People bash Titanic's seemingly lacklustre watertight bulkheads, but I think the Empress and the Lusitania had far bigger flaws - they had quite a few longitudinal bulkheads which caused them both to infamously roll over and sink shockingly fast. Titanic, on the other hand, stayed upright and safe for 2 and a half hours.
The Empress gets a small chapter but in his analysis of the Titanic, he does bring up the issue of bunkers and difference with the Lusitania. A book that deals with hulls and structural factors is "Titanic Ships, Titanic Disasters" - a very detailed and technical book.
Amazing video!
Thank you! This ship is one of my all time favourites
What a really odd and interesting read! A tank sled is so unique!
Exactly! It's fascinating looking at all the different designs - they would be perfect for an ice-themed version of the Mad Max movies.

Grazie! That is an impressive list. I have several of those titles, I particularly like "On Seas Contested."
Here is a great book on Regia Marina MAS . " A History of the Regia Marina's MAS Boats from 1915- 1945" By. T.Garth Connelly. It is a very good read.
Thank you! I have read good things about this book and its scope allows us to see the evolution of MAS boat design.
Great Book review. I will have to add this to my library. I would love to see what books you have in your library. Thank you again.
@@AnthonyPerzia Thank you! There's plenty more coming and if there's a topic you're interested in, I can dig through the library and review a relevant book
Just discovered your channel, you cover very interesting topics and I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Thank you! Hopefully you'll find plenty of books here - and with much more to come!
A great book. Thanks for the review ❤
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Where can those books be purchased?
I found my copies at the Western Australian Museum and they should still have them in stock: visit.museum.wa.gov.au/shipwrecks/naval-sea-power-miniature (this link is for the exhibition however the contact details are at the bottom of the page)
Thanks, so only available to buy if visiting on holiday?
@@Ramillies1981 you can contact the museum and if they still have books in stock they may be able to deliver
He was my great uncle.
The book has also been picked up for a film.
That's interesting, hopefully it'll be done as a docu-drama
Many people know more about US geography than Americans know about world geography.
What an interesting and terrifying read!
It most certainly is! It kept me awake far longer than I expected...
I just bought an original copy from 1912 for $35 on eBay. It’s complete and in great condition. Arriving soon…
I hope it arrived safely! Enjoy a piece of history!
I'm glad this channel randomly wound up in my recommended tab as it's exactly what I was looking for! Once I get through my giant backlog of books, I'll definitely be picking up some of the ones mentioned in previous videos.
Couldn't agree more! I have several books now based off Phil's reviews and they are all excellent.
Much appreciated! There's a lot to enjoy and more to come!
This makes me so happy, this is exactly why I started this channel! Many, many thanks!
The Tudor may have fit the British conception of what Postwar air travel was going to be, and could have filled that niche well, but it was competing with the Douglas DC-6, Lockheed 749 Constellations, and the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser on the high end, where it didn't compete in payload, range, or cruise speed, and a massive flock of DC-4s on the low end. The closest analogue was the Canadair North Star, basically a pressurized DC-4 with the same Merlin engines as the Tudor, but, again, with more payload and range.
Yes, the major issue was that between 1940-43 due to the need to totally concentrate on military aircraft, even considering civil designs wasn’t understandably happening. Whereas in the US civil design and development and production never stopped, they were though initially pressed into military transport service.
I think the aircraft was cursed after it's designer Roy Chadwick was drowned in a crash of one of the prototypes, the aileron cables were reversed by accident during maintenance .. BSAA crew were constantly lifting the floor boards in flight to try fix different systems, not good on long Atlantic flights to Bermuda and S. America. It's heartbreaking reading the stories of Tudors and Lancastrians searching the ocean for missing colleagues on Star Tiger and Star Ariel .. Be interesting to read this book, thanks for review ..
A good review, well put over. BTW I am the guy who did the drawings for this book, Mike Zoeller.
That's awesome! Loved those drawings! They complemented each chapter and illuminated how the Tudor looks in its various guises.
and I was the lucky guy to do the cover illustration on the front page
Superb! Well recommended. I’ve just purchased this book.
Awesome! It's an excellent account of a master model maker and his craft
Hi Captain Phill. New subscriber here. Looking forward to more reviews. You have an impressive library! I’m interested in hearing more about your background and interests.
Many Thanks! Hopefully you'll find plenty of book reviews to enjoy and there's much more to come
Another good book to read which is more of a survivors story is "Zeebrugge! A Hero's Story" by Stephen Homewood! He was the Purser onboard the Herald of Free Enterprise on the night of March 6th 1987! I recommend this book as it is very factual and tells his story and also goes through most of his career at sea and also mentions "merchant navy pranks" i.e. sending an apprentice for a "Tin of Spotted Paint" or a "Left Handed Screwdriver & Spanner"
Thank you! I'll be looking into this book, especially as it presents a personal perspective.
I'd always be taking this book out from the school library when i was a kid, but forgot the name. Thanks for this video
Another excellent review! I haven't heard of this book before, and certainly something I am interested in!
Many Thanks! This publisher has an interesting catalogue of titles about the lesser known aircraft.
Thanks for the wonderful review. I had been crossing my fingers that my book would make it on your amazing channel. Thanks again!
Thank you! Your level of research was masterful, especially how evidence was cross checked with comparable accounts to determine accuracy. Factoring in age and how it affected memory could have been a book in itself. Bring on the next project!
Ooo I think I had this one as a kid
It's a great book! I ended up getting my copy about 20 years after it went out of publication :D
For those lucky enough to read Spanish "Historia naval de la Guerra Civil. 1936-1939" by Adolfo Morales Trueba, Naval officer with an academic background too. The book was first published in 2023. In my opinion a very good, profesional account that would deserve to be translated into English.
I agree, hopefully a publisher such as the Naval Institute Press will take it on. Hooton also just published a book called "Franco's Pirates" which looks at the Naval aspects of the Civil War but he may not have had access to Trueba's manuscript. I'm aiming to review Hooton's book in the future and seeing how it compares to this one.
Nice review, I like your enthusiasm
Much appreciated! Thank you!
Thank you 😊
Man that seems like a really great book! Thanks for the recommendation!
On the sinking of the Atlantic, it's excellent - you can feel the research oozing from the pages.
What a beautiful book! Thanks for doing my request!!!
My pleasure! The Atlantic gets forgotten with the later 20th century wrecks.
Awesome video! A book I did not know about! Could you maybe place a link to a place we could purchase the book? Thanks!
Many Thanks! Here is a link from the publisher and you can also purchase it through Amazon: www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/from-ironclads-to-dreadnoughts-the-development-of-the-german-battleship-1864-1918.php#:~:text=The%20early%20chapters%20of%20From,became%20naval%20minister%20in%201897.
@@captainphillreviews Thank you!
I didn't know Drachinifel had a brother.
I appreciate the review, thanks for this! 😊 Given the cost of these kinds of reference works, it's nice to get a sense for what you're buying.
Thank you, that's one of the reasons I started this - to hopefully give people an idea of these books and what to expect.
What a nicke Review!
Nice work, I got it last year and in flipping through it, I was VERY impressed...might read it one day 😊
It's quite the tome - at least it's organised in a way that you can read chapters independently
Very nice, keep it up brother

Thanks for the great review mate! Rich at Chandos
credit where credit is due, it's an awesome book! A little down the track I'm aiming to do one about the Graf Zeppelin's Eagles.
It's wild to think the whole battleship era was only 60 or so years.
Exactly - and look at how many ships were built in that era.
Drachinifel i know that's you
Fantastic content… your voice is very soothing also. Thank you
Many Thanks!
