Thank you for this video, I finally understand this concept now. A masjid by my home says SE is the correct direction and they are very staunch on this position and unbending. If you bring up this topic they say things such as “we are not in an airplane” and “SE is the shortest distance”. It truly put my heart in distress because I was worried what if they are correct. But now understand why the majority of Muslims in US pray NE. Do you know off hand if our prayers are valid if we pray in a masjid that is SE qibla?
Assalaamu Alaikum, We thank Allah for His Blessings, and for allowing us to recognize the Haqq (truth), and we ask that Allah keep us firm upon His Path. Firstly, the term "Qibla" legislatively speaking refers to the direction towards the Ka'bah, so we do not refer to the South East direction as South East "Qibla". Secondly, with regards to the Salah, facing the correct Qibla is a condition for the validity of the Salah, so for the one who knowingly faces a direction other than it - or the one who does not take their due diligence to determine the Qibla - their Salah is invalid. It may be beneficial to note that, what is required regarding facing the Qibla is to face the general direction of the Ka'bah for those who are far away from the Ka'bah, such that they cannot see it. In other words, those living in North America are not required to check, when standing for Salah, if they are facing exactly 52° or any specific angle, but rather are only required to face the general direction (i.e. North-East), as the Fuqahaa' (scholars of Fiqh) mentioned on the basis of an authentic Hadith relating to this. The argument is essentially whether or not you observe the curvature of the earth when facing the qiblah. If you do observe the curvature then it's NE. If you do not observe the curvature then the direction is SE. The issue or confusion comes from there not being many classical scholars stating whether or not you observe this curvature of the earth. Some take what Imam Abu Hanifah said which was the east is the Qiblah of the people of the west, the west is the Qiblah of the people of the east, the south is the Qiblah of the people of the north, and the north is the Qiblah of the people of the south and face the general direction (why some masjids pray straight east). An argument used to challenge the NE/curvature direction is if you're praying on a base of a mountain with a high peak and small base in front of the kabah; would you pray around the base, because its the shortest distance (but if the mountain wasn't there you wouldn't be facing the kabah) or would you face the mountain, essentially praying "through" it. Do your own due diligence on the issue but make sure to understand both sides.
