    My little girl when down a hole under a tree stump. She was not very old a little puppy. I could not reach her with with my arm. I ripped the rotted tree trunk up buy did not get to her. I knew that possums and other animals used the stump hole. I was tripping, then she climbed out. Got four dogs they live outside and watch the garden. They are killers, one will hold the head, one or two a back leg. who ever is free will rip the stomach out. Ground chucks that are twice their size. They have been attacked by large pitts more than once and have ran them down the street. Did not know that they were one of most vicious dog breeds. At the dog park they play on the big dog side. like the video cool.

    Would love to own one. Great dogs. Next door neighbor had one. He use to let him out his back sliding door when he saw a squirrel in the yard. He would crack open the door and that Jack was gone. By the time the squirrel knew what was going on that Jack was on him. It was amazing how fast he could close the gap at forty to fifty feet.

    As a young man I hunted a pack of JR’s, mainly rat and provided a service to the local farming community in keeping the fox population under control. Now banned in the UK and as a result the rifle has taken over killing indiscriminately. The benefit in those days was the ability to select the healthy and move them on but that no longer applies. At 200 yards plus there is no selection process and fit, healthy foxes are despatched as well as the sick, lame and lazy. I moved on to the Patterdale for a while and finished with the Border which I found were stubborn (ish) but you could work a pack with far less aggressive issues associated with JRTs or Patterdales. You will see in the terrier races, the dogs were muzzled, if they do or don’t get the lure they will regularly fight each other, it matters not, they just enjoy a scrap. What this video says about the JRT applies to almost every working terrier breed and their temperament is influenced by the owner (I prefer handler) and how they’re managed. I had many years of great sport, fun and loyalty from all of my terriers, without exception, the last Border was buried in 2021 after a span of some 50 plus years. A great little worker is the JRT but it’s best not to have tunnel vision or a closed mind: remember they all originate from the fox terrier and for general work should be 14” high and around 14 lbs in weight with a penny dot on the back if you want to go back to the Parsons original. Great video, a reminder of my yesteryears where in the Uk you were free to work your dogs. Well done and thank you.

    I would like to know if anyone else has a non-violent Jack Russell. I have quite a large yard and nothing except squirrels and rabbits are allowed to live in it although I've never seen her harm another animal she has made ground squirrels leave possums will not come around nor raccoons and even the coyote that occasionally loops through looks around nervously and does not stop. She is fearless read my other comment one down from this and if anybody has a Jack Russell like this let me know you can't believe what an exemplary dog she has been she knows it doesn't tricks she has only urinated in the house once when she was a puppy I told her not to dig she doesn't dig sometimes I wonder if she's a normal dog

      They are all different, even in the same litter but a good breeder can tell in a few weeks what pup is likely going to be temperament wise. We had one litter they were all fighters they are great hunters but we had to make sure we placed them with folks who could handle them.

    It is incredibly easy to see that my Jack Russell has all the instinct of a incredible hunting dogs. I decided not to hunt any more years ago and my grandson purchased the jack russell for me as a companion and a pet. I have spent many a happy year outside with a ball and throwing stick and a huge yard watching my Jack Russell run tirelessly for an hour or an hour and a half at a time. My Jack Russell pretty much ignores the squirrels and the rabbits even the birds that infest my yard. I've actually seen her get out of the way of a terrified rabbit blindly running right at her if she wouldn't have moved. I have never seen her kill anything or attack anything although I have never seen a mouse or a rat anywhere around my house or in the yard. A few years in a row my yard would have been infested with 13 striped ground squirrels my Jack Russell Annabelle got rid of every single one. The count is up to 15 now. I've never seen her harm one although 13 stripe ground squirrels she will chase and threaten with death although she's never actually killed one. I do find this strange because more than once she did have the ability to catch the ground squirrel but declined. I usually take her out three times a day so every day I would notice one of her Target ground squirrels would have moved out never to be seen again and since I never let her out without being there I'm pretty sure she didn't harm it. I'm just curious I've never attempted to train her not to attack vermin in the yard she just doesn't and except for squirrels and rabbits no other animals their face or wrath in spite of the fact she doesn't seem to harm any of them.

    My sister had a small Jack Russell named Emma. She put in a small dog door, huge mistake. Emma dragged whatever she caught or killed through the door inside the house and would proceed to work it over. Rats, mice, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, opossums, etc. She called me one day to inform me that Emma had managed to drag the biggest opossum through the door and was proceeding to shred it in the living room. Told her to wrap both in an old jacket and toss it out the door. Hubby had to bury the opossum. No accounting for what Emma would drag in. Went on for 12 or 13 years. Sure miss my sister's horror stories.

    My wife and I had a JRT that we got from a 'rescue shelter', I initially didn't want the dog because she looked small and fragile, she was small probably the runt of the litter but she was tough as nails and often 'backed down' dogs many times her size, definitely a 'big dog in a small body'. Her instinct to hunt was off the chart, I once watched her crouching down in tall grass scoping some doves that had landed in our yard; I thought that silly dog thinks she can catch a dove and called my wife over to see. That darn dog waited motionless for several minutes until one of the doves made the fatal mistake of venturing too close, to our surprise the dog launched out as if shot from a canon and snatched that dove out of the air when the dove was already five feet off the ground!!! It was amazing to see, catching doves was one of her favorite things to do.....

      There's no telling what these dogs will come up with, Tally-Ho would never look up when hunting until we took her ratting at a chicken farm and she discovered that the rats were in the rafters, as a result I had to add a top on her kennel because she learned to climb.

    • @joshuarosen6242
      @joshuarosen6242 6 місяців тому

      I watched the first 5 seconds of this and came to say the same thing. It’s cruel and a terrible shame. My little JRT has a wonderful tail - it’s one of his best features and he’s a very fine looking dog anyway (I know I’d say so but it’s no exaggeration to say that literally hundreds of people have said so). We went to see some puppies before we picked ours and I didn’t immediately realise they’d been docked as I wasn’t sure how long a very young puppy’s tail was. As soon as she mentioned that, we walked straight out. It’s also illegal here in the UK but is still depressingly common. Docking is not acceptable and all the arguments in favour are specious nonsense.

    • @Jitterbuggn
      @Jitterbuggn 6 місяців тому

      @@joshuarosen6242 Yep, my husband calls it his rudder. If you scratch my JRT’s right hip he wraps his tail around your wrist trying to keep it there scratching. Shift to the left hip and he shifts his tail to the left wrist. We do have to keep the very end of his tail fur trimmed up though because when it gets long enough to tickle his own back it startles him.

    • @jackrussellmaniacs
      @jackrussellmaniacs 6 місяців тому

      I understand the feelings here, I myself don't like having it done but it is part of the dogs hunting tradition because the docked tail is used as a handle when hunting and a longer tail could break. The docking is done when the pups are a week old, so they have no memory of the removal, at the same time the dew claws are removed, the dew claws need to be removed or the dog will tear them off later in life. I know they don't dock the tails over seas, but since it is a big deal to have it done to an adult dog we have it done at the same time as the dew claws to save the new owners the expense and to save the dog the trauma when they will remember it. I'm still on the fence on this one.

    • @r.f.hopkins8163

      @@jackrussellmaniacs Also, if you take note, it is a breeding trait established, as on my Parson's Russell. The base of the tail is distinctly thicker for about 3.5 inches and then thins. Tails were clipped at this point, as said to prevent injury. Ours was a Rescue so her tail was not "bobbed". However, when she was young and played rough she "tweaked" her tail at this transition point several times, and to this day she is very protective of it. That said, I still wouldn't "bob" the tail, but be aware it is a point of easy injury. This genetic thick base tail trait was bred in for, as you said, a handle to pull them out of the fox or varmint hole. We also had problems with the dew claw, she ripped the nail off more than once, but their tough buggers so injuries are a part of the breed. Highly motivated, I like to say.

    It screens the blood and removes any old or damaged red blood cells. If the spleen doesn't work properly, it may start to remove healthy blood cells. This can lead to: anaemia, from a reduced number of red blood cells. I had this happen in my senior pug , unfortunately it didn’t end well and he passed .
