Where to Escape Winter in Europe?
Constant gray skies without a shred of light. An incessant depressing drizzle. Scraping ice off your windshield as your fingers go numb. A brown mess of melting snow and muck on the streets. Long, dark afternoons that make you want to sleep entire days.
Who doesn’t love winters in Europe?

Idyllic Greek coves, bustling Italian cities, verdant French Riviera towns, lively Spanish pueblos, expansive Portuguese beaches… All bring to mind abundant sunshine, clear blue skies, azure waters, and balmy temperatures. A paradise. There’s no wonder that so many people dream of moving to southern Europe. Who wouldn’t want to live in such a utopia? But some ugly truths hide behind the dreams ...

    This is really interesting as someone from California. We have the same weather as the mediterranean region but our buildings are generally heavily insulated and most buildings have heating or a/c. Thinking about not having good insulation and heating, I know it would be deadly here without them. In winter the homeless here have little to no insulation and electric or gas heaters and they still can get hypothermia. That’s why we have heating centers in the summer to keep people warm who can’t due to their homes or circumstances. I wonder if these southern European places have anything similar. And for summer in the central valley where I am, and it is hotter, everywhere has a/c. We also have cooling centers for the summer. Do you guys have measures in place to help remedy these issues? And is there a push for insulating homes or giving a/c and heating units for people?

      Thanks for your comment. Malta is one of the warmest destinations in southern Europe but it still has cold days, particularly when it's windy. I haven't been to Malta so I can't speak from my own experience, though. All I know is that I've been to other, some of the warmest areas of southern Europe, and I often needed a fleece even during the day (and so did most locals). Maybe I'm just not well adapted to cold weather but I've seen many, many locals who wear proper winter clothes in the winter in southern Europe - definitely not just t-shirts. That's typically only tourists from cold countries who wear very light clothes. For example, no Spaniard (or very few) would wear just a t-shirt in the winter, while most tourists for example from the UK would.

    I think it's really good. There are many aspects sifted down into a coherent viewpoint. I live in Malta and found that if your apartment has decent windows the Maltese winter so far is extremely pleasant compared to central European winters. Water scarcity is another thing here especially as this tiny island is completely without freshwater supply and it has been for most of known history.

    • @betterwhere
      @betterwhere 16 годин тому

      Thank you for your comment. I haven't been to Malta yet so thank you for that perspective. If you have double glazed windows then that helps immensely. Single glazed ones mean that any accumulated heat is going to dissipate rapidly. As for water scarcity, unfortunately that's the case with many islands. One of the most notable exceptions is Madeira but of course, with more water usually comes worse weather (more clouds and rain).

    I realized my room in Athens was cold when I came back from the Netherlands where the insulation was generally better and heating was on all the time. However I may add to this, that apartments with good enough heating are not as scarce as it might seem in this video, although there are indeed several old houses that are not fit for winter. For example, in the apartment my family lives it could cost 100€ more per month to keep the heating on all the times, and we decided to not use it unless it's really cold outside. Also, there are buildings that have central heating but it's not used because all the residents would have to agree and pay for fuel, but not every one can afford it. Finally, I find interesting the perspective of people living in colder countries about the climate in the southern countries, and how ideal it seems.

      Thank you for your comment. I think that a lot has to do with what you're accustomed to. I've always lived in an apartment that was so warm in the winter that I could wear a t-shirt and shorts. Any place where I have to put extra layers is cold for me. If I have to wear a thick sweater indoors and still feel cold, then that's very cold. Then there's also humidity: I'm accustomed to low humidity so a cold AND damp place feels even worse. Maybe I was unlucky but I've spent time in at least 10-20 different places in southern Europe and almost all of them were cold. The ones that weren't were usually built and/or owned by someone from a cold country (for example, from Germany). Interesting point about the availability of heating but people choosing not to use it - if you're one of the residents who would like to use it but others don't, there's nothing you can do even if technically you have access to it.

      Thank you for the comment. My previous videos were indeed made with a human-like (but still unfortunately obvious) AI voice and edited by me. I debated deleting them but people still find them useful so I decided to keep them. This video is my new style and my editor didn't use AI except for maybe some illustrations. The narration is human and so is the script and everything else.

    I'm portuguese and this is somewhat true. Cheaper and older houses in Portugal were not insulated at all. It used to be a nightmare just to leave bed to go to work in Winter. But that depends on the house, of course. And nowadays the weather has been better so less cold days at home. I am living now in Poland and, obviously, it is warmer indoors than in Portugal (in general). I've also lived in Scotland and got some pretty poorly insulated flats. Like everything, it depends. If you are a tourist and come to Portugal during the winter, if you want a nice warm airbnb, make sure it is winter ready.

    • @betterwhere
      @betterwhere 23 години тому

      Thank you for your comment and for your perspective comparing Portugal to Poland. Would you say that new houses and apartments in Portugal are much better insulated? I only spent a few days in the fall in Portugal so it was still rather warm but as far as I remember the insulation was rather non-existent. I've heard that many places in the United Kingdom suffer from poor insulation, too. As for coming as a tourist to Portugal (or any other warm country) in the winter, I highly recommend checking out reviews of people who stayed there in the winter. It's common to pick an Airbnb with nice reviews and then be surprised how cold it is because very few people visit these warm countries in the winter and nobody has actually experienced what it's like there in a given Airbnb when it's cold.

    Not sure what you are talking about. I live in southern Spain and it's 18 degrees outside now in January and 25 degrees inside. The building is well insulated and ppl invented indoor heating some hundreds of years ago, so that solves the problem of cold night.

    • @betterwhere
      @betterwhere 23 години тому

      Thanks for your comment. You're lucky then to live in such a well-insulated building. Is it a new building? Is it an apartment building or a house? What city? I've been to southern Spain many times in the winter and I've never seen 25 degrees inside and probably not even 20 degrees. This was in various areas of southern Spain. Granted, I usually spend time in the countryside and not in the city but the one time I was in an apartment in the city (Alicante) it was freezing cold inside as well.

    • @betterwhere
      @betterwhere 22 години тому

      @@Ejjejejejdmdjjd thanks for the comment. I keep in touch with some friends in southern Greece and I heard you had some really nice winter days there. But there were also rainy days with 10 degrees during the day and close to 0 at night and I imagine that must have been super cold indoors. One of my friends has a badly-insulated apartment and suffers a lot there if he's there in the winter (which is why he's not there now). Another friend recently bought a new apartment in a recently-built building and his experience is different. He doesn't feel cold at home (but his apartment is also directly in the sun). But yet another friend rented an apartment in an older building and she was cold there as well already in November. So it really depends on the place but if you don't have a lot of money, you're definitely way more likely to encounter a cold apartment.

    I literally never comment, but this is so not true, so I had to. Yes, the houses are less insulated in S Europe, but the winter only lasts for about 3 months tops, whereas living in (South) Germany for example, the cold weather is about 9-10 months of the year. I lived in 2 flats in Germany so far and I had trouble heating them up to more than 21 degrees, because it's THAT cold outside. And swimming? Also false. I lived in Split Croatia and swam from March/April onwards. Yes, water is not warm as in the summer, but most people can take a quick dip and then lay on the beach in the sun IN SWIMSUIT. I also stayed the whole May in Marbella (near Malaga) and was able to swim 90% of the days. So I'm not sure if you just had really bad experience, but in my personal opinion and experience, it is not at all that bad. :)

    • @betterwhere
      @betterwhere 23 години тому

      Thank you for your comment and I'm glad to have sparked that reaction in you to post a comment even though you never do that :) We definitely have very different experiences, both in cold and hot countries. I live in Poland. My apartment can easily reach 26 degrees Celsius in the winter and I actually have to reduce heating so that it's not too hot. Same goes for the apartments or houses of my family and friends - but they usually keep the temperature at 22-23 degrees because they don't like it too hot. If I travel in the winter in Poland (I frequently go to Warsaw) I'm also never cold. I've been recently to Sofia, countryside in northern Italy, and Vienna - in all cases it was super warm inside even though it was cold outside. I spent some time in Berlin in the winter, too - the apartment was also super warm inside. This may depend on a person's cold tolerance. For me, 3 months of freezing indoors is a torture so I prefer either cold weather outside (but very comfortable inside) or hot weather outside (even if it's too hot inside). As for swimming, it sounds like you may have very good cold tolerance. I was actually in Split in May and while I did swim, it was about 20 degrees Celsius and I wouldn't call it super pleasant swimming. I can't imagine doing that in March. And while there were people on the beach, I saw only 1 or 2 other people swimming. For me, properly comfortable swimming starts around 25 degrees Celsius.
