Drumcoltran Castle (Tower): In 1550, the lordship of Kirkcunzeon passed from the Herries family to the Maxwells of Caerlaverock, when a son of Lord Maxwell married Agnes Herries. The couple may have built Drumcoltran Tower soon after. It possibly began as a simple rectangular tower, with a projecting wing added at the end of the 1500s, including a new entrance and the spiral stair. But the buil...

The first mention of the marches was in a Council Minute on the 15th of May 1730. It was custom to inspect the Burgh Boundaries to ensure no encroachments had been made by neighbouring landowners. This however was stopped but in 1853 a petition was presented to the town council asking for the Marches to be revived. Sadly, it was turned down and there is no other mention until 2nd September 1909...

I stayed twice at Crossbasket, in '89 and in '91. It was a different sort of place back then. Much more humble. It has been interesting to see the changes over the years as well as those most recent. The place is stunning! I must admit it messes with my memories a wee bit.

@allthings2allmen, thanks for you comments and for taken the time to view this video, I have to agree with you, the old building had that look of lived in as well as being old and well loved, it's had many owners over the years, and at some point ( prior to the redevelopment) was not so grand, so perhaps it needed that investment to bring out it's former glory eh! the only thing I don't like about the new owners, they removed the pathway round the back, the one that use to take us to the waterfalls ( It's harder to get there now)

Hi MichaelCook84, sorry for this late reply. The monument comprises a largely artificial island in Loch Moy which was fortified, probably during the Middle Ages and which, by the 17th century, supported a laird's house along with a considerable number of service buildings. The island also supports a B-listed obelisk. Thanks for viewing this video & I hope this reply answers your question 👍😉

Elvira, if I remember correctly, Lachlan’s son ( the 31st Clan Chief) sketched out some pictures of how Moy Hall No 2 looked like and were displayed in the museum’s wall just as you entered the door ( on the left hand side) Mrs Mackintosh of Mackintosh said the Island was a village with a high street running it entire length, and the small island ( man made) just beyond the top of the video was placed there and any locals who had disturbed the peace or got into bother with the police, were put on the island for 24 hours for punishment and later either taken to face the judge or sent home, Moy Hall was a superb structure and sadly demolished in the 1950’s, my cousin and I made a small film about Clan Mackintosh if you wish to have a look, search “the twa togs adventures” on UA-cam Thank you again for taken the time to view my drone footage and your kind comments 😊

Sad to see Moy Hall now. No visitors were welcomed on our last trip. Glad that we visited in 1968 when it was grand. It was a rare privilege to have met the Laird, Lacklan Mackintosh. He showed us around a small museum close by. Fascinating story. Thanks for sharing.

Elvira, I wish I had been there in 1968, Mrs Mackintosh of Mackintosh spoke very lovingly of her late husband (Lachlan) when I visited last year, she showed myself and my cousin the small museum but asked not to film inside it as work was being undertaken, visitors had been cancelled since the start of the pandemic, but hopefully this year the estate will be open to the public and the clan gathering will take place ( fingers crossed) Thank you for you kind comments and I hope your memories of Moy Hall came flooding back ad made you smile 😊
