What kind of animal is this I saw for the first time

It's a takin, a rare endangered animal, something in between a bull, a sheep and a goat, you'd only meet in Tibetan parts of China, India or Bhutan, if you were *very* lucky. So no wonder you see it for the first time: I also saw it for the first time when filming this in the zoo :)

However, the closest living relative of the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus), both are the only two extant members of the tribe Ovibovini, one of the three tribes that constitute the subfamily Ovibovinae, the others being Hemitragini (Tahrs) and Naemorhedini (Gorals, Mountain Goat, Serows, and Chamoises), this subfamily is an ancient lineage of bovids originating from Eurasia during the Miocene, the Ovibovinae subfamily is divided into three tribes: Hemitragini (Tahrs), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Mountain Goat, Serows, and Chamoises), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin), the tahrs (tribe Hemitragini) are the most basal tribe of ovibovines, there are three extant species of tahr within three respective genera being the Arabian Tahr (Arabitragus jayakari), the Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius), and the Himalayan Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus), then followed by the split between the tribes Naemorhedini and Ovibovini, Naemorhedini is the largest tribe of ovibovines and is constituted by seventeen extant species within four genera being the Asiatic Chamois (Rupicapra asiatica), the Italian Chamois (Rupicapra ornata), the Alpine Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), the Western Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica), the Bangladeshi Serow (Capricornis bangladeshiensis), the Red Serow (Capricornis rubidus), the Indochinese Serow (Capricornis maritimus), the Sumatran Serow (Capricornis sumatraensis), the Himalayan Serow (Capricornis thar), the Chinese Serow (Capricornis milneedwardsii), the Formosan Serow (Capricornis swinhoei), the Japanese Serow (Capricornis crispus), the Red Goral (Naemorhedus baileyi), the Himalayan Goral (Naemorhedus goral), the Chinese Goral (Naemorhedus griseus), the Long-Tailed Goral (Naemorhedus caudatus), and the Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus), whilst Ovibovini contains only two extant species under two respective genera being the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) and the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus), it is hinted that the Ovibovinae subfamily is most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Damalisks, and Hirola) based on similar characteristics.

Aren't Takins member of the Caprini and thus not closer related to wildebeest and so on? @@indyreno2933

Salam Mohamed, interestingly, I have fancied visiting Algeria for probably 7-8 years to see the Sahara and how Tuareg people live. It is difficult because it's an expensive SUV trip, you can't just trek on foot there as I did in Patagonia. And also I don't know a word in French (let alone Arabic). So it's a question who of us two will fulfil his dream first: you 🥾 🥾 🥾 in Patagonia or I 🐪 🐪 🐪 in Algerian Sahara. Good luck to both of us!
