Oldtime Fiddle FAQ: Craig Judelman
Переглядів 4,9 тис.4 роки тому
Here Craig gives answers to some of the most common questions oldtime fiddlers have. Of course, in oldtime there are no "right" answers, but Craig's combination of experience and technical knowledge is sure a great place to start. What strings should I use? How to learn variations? How can I learn bowings from recordings? What are the most essential bowings for oldtime fiddlers? And much more...

    since you recommended to bring this tune to a jam i decided to and so far ive been booed out of six jams across the country and counting for "jam-busting". Thanks Craig! as a side note, this tune has some fun lyrics to sing!

    When you're not supporting the fiddle on the heel of your left hand as you play off-the-shoulder, how do you prevent your hand from sliding up towards your body as the fiddle rests between your thumb and the bottom joint of your forefinger? As my hand slides up, my fingers are no longer in the correct position on the fingerboard to play the right notes. Great instructional video, BTW.

    Have you ever heard of an old timer named Alva Green. I think you would really enjoy his fiddle playing……check out his tune called Hunky Dori….man his fiddling in that song sounds like razor steal! Some of his other songs seem to have some kind of Native American influence in them very unusual….think his fiddle’s setup has a flattened bridge like a lot of old timers to make drowning a little easier….Cheers!

    Do you keep the bow hair as loose as possible to make double stops easier? Thanks in advance.

    • @craigjudelman
      @craigjudelman 2 місяці тому

      Some problem do, others keep it quite tight so they can really dig into the strings for some edgy articulation, which I do a bit when playing for dances, but generally I find getting 2 strings is mostly just about playing on the right angle and then w a loose wrist you can get other drones on a 3rd or 4th string without too much effort (but a bit of practice…), I try to keep the bow a little tight to be able to lean into it but not any tighter than I need so it’s also still pretty bouncy and will sit in the string, especially if I’m playing more stately or civilized tunes… Hope that helps, try to find what works for you, and maybe try playing with different amounts at of arm weight/downward pressure combined with different amounts of tightness in the bow hair and see if you find a combination (or even better different combinations…) that work better for you!

    Anyone wondering about tuning - this tune is usually played in standard with the g string run down to an e. He's playing in the equivalent tuning here but tuned down so there's a C on the bass... So C Bb F c
