YoYo Quilt Finished Share How I Designed It- All Scraps
Переглядів 1509 годин тому
Welcome Beautiful Artisans! I finished this quilt and I love the cheerful aesthetic. I share the design I decided upon and how I sewed it together. This is not based on a pattern, but rather creativity and how I wanted it to look and I choose to sew it with tie knots because they are very secure and adorable. I also share a keychain I'm designing with two yoyos, ribbon and well it can be a coin...

    Hi dear Carmella, I know how difficult it would be to weigh and pack and get the floral lap quilt to the post office these days. If you can sell it at your local Fall Fair this month, please do so. It would save you so much time and effort. And time is getting really close for you. You are a wonderful artist. I watch every video you post now that I've discovered you. Thank you so much for considering selling it to me across the country. Your friend. ❤ p.s. the Halloween quilt is adorable!! You're super!

    I believe serendipity is a power that's developed (possibly in creating more gamma brain waves) when we meditate, create, and be in our flow. We learn to make connections and attach meaning to more things. An author, Dawson Church, wrote a book about how brain waves change in creativity and spirituality almost identically. I hardly throw anything away, maybe zero waste is my goal. That said, it's almost a full time job just keeping things out of the landfill. I like your generous spirit of donating back or passing it along.

    I've never made a huge yoyo project before. You've inspired me to sew all sizes of yoyos, dictated by the amount of fabric I have on hand. I may try to mix the sizes on a base fabric, so it mimics garden blooms.

    Thank you very much for the video about mixing fabrics, it answered all my questions. Yeah, the fabric 'world' is totally odd as there are soo many different fabic blends now and the techniques change along the way. I worked in a hosiery mill for some time and the layers of cotton blends with elastic or spandex were nightmares and well, made a huge difference at wash and boarding , stitching toes and such. I'm happy to share what I know! You have a beautiful day. And thank-you!

  • @LSI.

    Can you show upclose the beautiful handstitched art on the wall behind you? Or refer a link to the video that shows the process if there is one. I usually mix fiber content, weave/knits, weights etc. in a kawandi because the pieces are all handstitched on a backing fabric. It will not have the usual stresses as when pieces are machine stitched together. However, I have not washed a kawandi yet but my guess is it should be fine. If there is puckering of some fabrics, that's fine and adds interest and texture. I prefer second hand fabrics in a kawandi so any shrinkage or malformation is taken out before cutting the pieces.

    • @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526
      @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526 9 днів тому

      Sounds like you have a method you really like. Stay with it. Consider 'threads' as they may tighten up in a 'machine' wash and some second hand fabrics may still be subject to 'shrinkage' (some wools, some layered cottons) This happened to boro sashiko inspired scarf I made- the threads tightened and some fabrics tightened from a machine wash. I didn't like the look of it after the machine wash. I hand washed it to hopefully even it out a bit and it did a little but the shape was effected. I love that you mix the fabrics and yes it create wonderful diversity in the textures. And yes, I will share the piece on the wall. Thank-you for sharing. It inspires us all to keep creating.

    Hello, I am new to Kawandi and want to know if there are any rules about what kind of fabric to use, should it be only cottons or can I use any kind of fabric and can I use different fabrics in one kawandi or not.. Welcome! I love the questions and I'm going to give short answer here, then do a video on this today for you as these are questions many do have when they first learn about Kiwandi. I use all scraps from thrift shop and yes, I will have pieces that are mixed and others like that are not. I'm inspired by Traidional Kiwandi the Siddi Women create from their Ancentors ancient methods of design. I will do video this afternoon and talk more about the mixing of fabrics, pros and cons! And where you can learn 'Traditional Kiwandi' if you like to! See you in a bit! Thank-you.

    These videos have been perfect for showing how to make this type of quilt! I have loved them and feel like I can do this now. I have one question though. When you have do more rounds ❤do you go all the way around? Are you concerned that it messes up your width between your rows of stitching? Do you just fit the additional rounds in between the existing rows? Thank you so much for making such good videos and explaining in such a way that a beginner can follow it!

    • @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526
      @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526 28 днів тому

      Oh, you are more then welcome! I typically go all the way around. The row you start just below or above will guide you to continue all the way around. If uneven rows (which yes can happen, no problem) makes it so you have to stop that particular round because there simply isn't any room, it won't obscure the design of your stitching if its a row or two.Now if you trying to be closer to authentic Kiwandi practice will get you the width you want more consistent as you work. I do not do these quilts by traditional manner. I hope this helps I'm sure your work beautiful!~

      Yes, I've done the traditional hand quilting, traditional machine patch work quilting, and I love ty knot quilting, boro, kiwandi and the crazy quilting methods. I blend the techniques. I think the visible stitching is what I love as when I work with the machine I'm always choosing to top stitch, or stipple stitch. I have a number of videos on here with different methods...we will have to revisit the ty knotting, carmellas way, and make more videos on them too!

    Hello Carmella, lovely to see you finishing, stitching the Kawandi table runner. I love any hand stitching project. I am glad that you chose the burgundy fabric for the backing rather than the light pink floral fabric. Please don't take my comment as a criticism but my preference is the dark/black fabric. However, it is your personal choice. The burgundy colour fabric you have chosen also looks lovely. By the way, do you leave the raw edges on your Kawandi table runner or do you turn raw edges in? Thank you Carmella for sharing your chats and progress. Do have a good week and look forward to watch your next video. Blessings to you, Thelma ❤

I found folding made sewing more difficult and I like the raw edges better and they go back to ancient methods. But that is only my way, if you want to fold that is totally okay! Heres the link. ua-cam.com/video/84ZCUogkkVk/v-deo.html

      That so kind! I think the best way to do the stitching is a little every day. Two hours goes by so quickly with several rounds! And smaller pieces help you finish within a day or so.

    Carmella did you sew two pieces of placemats together to get the runner? And can you tell me the size of those place mats? I have 2 20x20 place mats and was wondering if I could those. What is your suggestion?

      Yes, They are two pieces of fabric gifted me, so they scraps, but same size. The last two videos I show detail on how I made this from very beginning. I'll put link here....ua-cam.com/video/30nPNK8IFWk/v-deo.html. The next couple of videos I'm also showing more work on this piece. Today I will be dropping another video on this piece and we put the backing on!

      Love it, Carmella! I am currently working on a Kawandi inspired lap throw. On this piece I chose to arrange larger pieces in a more balanced way. For example, same fabric on all four corners and in the center... I'm loving doing this style of quilting! Thank you for inspiring me through your videos to think outside of the box!

    Can you tell me what size the 2 pieces you sewed together were?

    • @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526
      @checkitoutwithcarmella-t1526 Місяць тому

      Yes, now for this piece I used about 5" x 5" or so. This afternoon I'll talk more about sizes and how they can really be any size upon your design. In this video you'll notice some of these pieces are quite large like 7" x 4 or so! and other small. And any types of fabrics as when you wash a piece like this, which we will also cover, spray with water or easy soak in sink and air dry, no tumbling and washing or agitating.

    Are u leaving raw edges or do u tuck them in as u get to them?

      In traditional authentic Kiwandi the first row edges are folded. I leave all of mine raw through the entire piece. Friday, I will give more to answer as to why I do it that way! Thank you so much for asking!
