My brother in law Tim Stalcup was there at that time and has told me about it. He was in the Air Force with the 366th MMS F4 gun services. He was in the barracks on that Sunday morning when the 1st explosion blew him off the top bunk he was lying on.

I hope you know I'm careful not to double dip on these messages, no one likes a fake veteran. We Still have a good inventory of Vietnam Vets writing on the comments sections , I'm glad to see most of them writing their experiences here, I have known many Vietnam vets. I was born in 1961 but never served in Vietnam. Three of my uncles did serve, the only one to make it out into a career was my uncle, with 30 years. He definitely wears his wings on his sleeve!

Both my current Uncle who is now approaching 90 and separately a business partner from 2004 till 2011 who were both there when that happened. My uncle, was an Air Force technician, comms. He was only two miles away from the blast and it knocked him off his feet . My business partner, was a Marine on patrol on his second tour out of three , he said he felt the shock from 20 miles away. Estimates between 300 and 500 short tons of munitions.

Thanks for keeping the video in your library and sharing it with us, my uncle who is 88 was in denang working when that Depot went up and smoke. Another friend of mine, was a Marine on Mission 7 miles out of Danang Vietnam and they felt the blast when it first happened. So it is amazing to see what people have told me throughout the years! Thank you

I was a Seabee with NMCB 53 Camp Haskin red beach . We could see the shockwaves coming across the sky . It was a Sunday and that nite the scenes of the explosions where unbelievable . Not sure of the day we started but we started to rebuild a Marine camp right next to the bomb dump , it was totally flatten . When we finished there a lot of us headed to the freedom hill Px complex which was damaged along with many other buildings there . NMCB 5 rode that dam bomb dump explosion out as they where located next to freedom hill .

My dad was a CB there when that happened. His name was John Knutson. Said no food or water for 3 days and they all thought they were going to die.

I was there in 69 when it exploded. My recollection is that it was the Tet Offensive that started it in Feb 69. I know it was loud and it could be seen and heard where i was close to Marble Mountain at 7th Eng Bn, HQ next to FLC. I believe it caused explosions and fire for 3 days. I left in May to go home so i was definitely there in April 69. I just thought it was in Feb. Anyone else remember the date exactly? I was a Hosp Corps with 1st Marine Div, 7th Engineers

I was there. It was April 29 1969. Those news reels are not 10% of what went up.

I was at Phu Cat AB with the 421st MMS and went to DaNang afterwards to clean up the mess at the ammo dump and the craters were amazing, never did get our bronze star for that.

I was at the PX at Freedom Hill when it started to blow, I remember seeing the shock waves going across the sky. I was with the 40th Ord. and we had the Army Ammo dump, when I got back to the company area I was informed to get my gear and report to the perimeter for guard duty.

I was at ASP-1 that morning loading missile containers on the back of a 40' flat-bed with a rough terrain forklift. Myself, James Kabonic (plague) and Walt Prentiss took the M-series 5 ton cab back to the airbase for lunch. On the way back we saw there was a grass fire on the USMC side of the dump and we asked the Marines if they needed any help putting out the fire. They said it was under control and didn't need help from no "Air Force pussies." George Koetters=366th MMS

I was there and was part of the security force mainly at night. We were ordered to report early as ASPI was blowing up to ASPII. As we were on the M54's heading to ASPII the shock waves could be seen heading toward us and in the back of the trucks, so much gun powder in the air, I had to put on my gas mask to protect my face. Extra Marines went on guard duty for a month or so. Was not great duty for sure and went 24 hours a day. Official records was a grass fire caused it. All I know was on the radio that stated incoming that I heard.

My dad was attempting to put that fire out when the bomb dump went up. He was trying to protect the dump from the fire when it went up.

I could see from Red Beach, the shockwaves moving thru the air. Myself, and four others, were sent to another nearby ammo dump afterwards, to stand guard at night with the Marines, but we continued our regular duties during the day. This heightened security lasted about a month. The normal security at this site was not good. The same may have been true at the exploded site.

@BeechSundowner nobody really responded to you here. It is my belief that the reason is for instrument approach standards. here is a mountain right behind it and the runway usable landing runway is set further up to allow for a standard decent. The threshold provides extra takeoff room which is needed because the altitude is so high
