Expressive technology with paper circuits - Chibitronics blends circuits and code with arts and crafts. We make circuit stickers and other tools for educators, artists and crafters so everyone can create their own expressive electronics.
Chibitronics is an evolution of Jie Qi’s passion for combining technology and art through making electronics using paper craft. The circuit stickers were developed as part of her PhD research at the MIT Media Lab. Together with Andrew “bunnie” Huang and Patricia Ng, Jie’s research has evolved into the Chibitronics toolkits. We hope to share this new way of learning circuits and creating artwork, so that everyone can become technology creators!

Great tutorial! Do you have a suggestion for how to make sure the card doesn’t light up and wear out the battery when sending through the mail?

Do you have any advice for sending these types of cards in the mail?
If you add a piece of acetate or cardstock between the battery and the top of the switch that sticks out so that the recipient can remove it, that will stop it turning ok in the post. I hope that helps.

Love this card too! Just not sure how the last bit comes together. Do you seal the top flap to the bottom and then add to a card base, or does the flap have to be loose and not stuck down. Sorry, not sure how to finish off. Thanks. 😀

I love this card! I wonder if Chibi will make a stencil for the fade effects lights. We shall see.

Can one use Alkaline button batteries for these projects ?
Most alkaline button batteries tend to contain 1.5 V, while a CR2016 or CR2032 lithium cell contains 3.2 V (when new). In theory an alkaline button cell containing 3V would work for your paper circuit, but it might not last as long as the lithium cell.

Hi Brooklyn! You absolutely can use the copper tape in substitution for the Conductive Fabric Tape for this circuit! Happy circuit building!

How long does a battery light up 3 to 4 lights?
The answer to your question is that it depends. In general, a fresh 3V coin cell battery can power a circuit containing one or two LEDs for several days if it is running continuously. It can last weeks if it is switched off between uses. There are many different variables that can affect battery life. For example, the longevity of your battery depends in part on how fresh it is and how much capacity it has. The life of your battery also depends in part upon the number of LEDs being used and their colors. If your battery is powering a circuit with more than one LED, it will use more power than a circuit with a single LED. If your battery is powering a circuit with all red LEDs, it will use less power than a circuit containing all white LEDs.

Do you sell the kit or do I have to purchase separately?
We don't currently sell a kit for the tunnel book parts, but the cut files are free to download if you visit the full tutorial that accompanies the video. With the exception of the tilt sensor, the electronics supplies are all available in our shop. Our Craft with Light Kits (in white or colors) contain the LEDs, conductive tape, and batteries.
which is more durable--conductive copper tape or conductive fabric tape?
Over time, conductive copper tape may oxidize or crack in hinged areas that open and close repeatedly. Conductive fabric tape is generally more durable (it does not rip or tear).
