Crossing the Pacific Ocean (again)
Flying from California to Hawaii at 36000 feet, at 120x time lapse. I apologize for the wonky auto-stabilization. Sometimes Apple would stabilize on the horizon, and sometimes it'd stabilize on the dashboard.
We were passed by two planes, one 1,000 feet below us, the other 2,000 feet above us.

    After the first thought we all had when reading through the DF manual ("why is it THAT complicated?"), a question popped up in my mind. Is DF real? No, it can't be, but it is so detailed. Is it inspired by some real machinery? How do you come to such a realistic design, with subsystems, numeric specs, schematics and all...

    Can you fill the inert tanks before undocking? If possible, one should not have any alarms in "normal" mode. An alarm usually requires an action. On the same note, could you have refueled argon after docking? It seems pretty fuel inefficient to eyeball a hohmann transfer to intercept. I expect that in the final version, you are going to do some heavy tug task where you want to make the proper adjustments so that your periapsis will be at intercept and then can set the autopilot to match velocity with target. In all demos, people seem intent at dedicating one battery per bus. Would it be smarter to, when on external power, connect battery to both buses so that it can feed bus2 while charging from bus1?

    • @Onychoprion27
      @Onychoprion27 7 років тому

      There is an option for station services (you might notice them when I open the communication dialogue), but they're not working at the moment. There's also no way to go back from that option, which breaks the communications system entirely; hence why I don't open it. Yes, eyeballing hohmann transfer orbits is pretty inefficient. Though since the Main Engine System is effectively reactionless (you will eventually run out of reactor fuel, but never propellant), wasting delta-V isn't an issue. I do hope that future updates will have a better way of setting up transfer orbits, however. I'm hoping for something like the TransX mod in Orbiter, or something as simple as Kerbal Space Program's interface. As for battery charging, batteries can be charged from the main bus no matter which system bus they're linked to. Linking each battery to only one bus limits how quickly they drain, though also as the busses handle different functions (Bus 1 is more basic system functions, while Bus 2 are operational things, like Nav, MTS, etc.), the batteries will drain at different rates. If you don't start your reactors quickly enough, while powering everything on the batteries, Bus 2 will drain them far more quickly than Bus 1. That's why I try to only boot up operational systems after the reactor's running. Connecting to external power doesn't help, either, since it only provides power for Bus 1, but doesn't supply power to charge the batteries. Thus, even when booting on external power, Bus 2 will continue draining your batteries until your reactor is on-line. One advantage to connecting both batteries to both busses is that they will drain in sequence, and can provide an easy method for determining just how much power you have left. Battery 1 will drain first, followed by 2. Though with frugal use of power, you can easily get your reactor on-line on a single battery, so it's not too big an issue.

      @TormodSteinsholt 7 років тому

      Excellent reply. Yes, although the simplicity of turning knobs has a retro appeal and is sufficient for leveraging prograde/retrograde/normal/radial concepts to match target velocities, target attitudes or orbits, then I hope it wont come at the expense of the stuff you mention. Something akin to planning burns in Kerbal is needed.

    • @Onychoprion27
      @Onychoprion27 7 років тому

      Or even just a depiction of your orbit and your locked target's orbit would be helpful. Again, I am biased more toward MFD-style 2D displays than trying to incorporate a 3D Kerbal-style interface on the info screen, which would feel clunky and tacked-on in comparison to the rest of the interface, IMO. Being able to see the orbits and the positions of yourself and your target would at least facilitate making transfer maneuvers.

    • @TormodSteinsholt
      @TormodSteinsholt 7 років тому

      Absolutely. Even so, I will forever thank Kerbal for building my mental map so that I can have situational awareness from mere orbital data. And, if the mechjeb2 manuevers where available from the onboard computer, then that would go a very long way without compromising the 2D MFD experience. And, if the AP target knob had a setting for targeted (LOC locked) docking port and the feature knob had a setting for matching attitude (maybe a switch for "reverse Y"), then the currently available difficult mission would be pretty simple. Even though it still feels weird eyeballing the approach burn.

    • @Onychoprion27
      @Onychoprion27 8 років тому

      It's *from* the game. The "Kadish" referenced in the note (or, rather, the author of the note) was Guildmaster Kadish of the Guild of Writers. He was kind of an eccentric, building massive contraptions to trick people into thinking he had special powers (such as time travel). As the D'ni Civilization came to an end, Kadish retreated to a vault and there perished, surrounded by his wealth. Hence the note.
