Deep Ellum Blues -- Old Woolie and The Rusty Blades
The title of the tune refers to the historical African-American neighborhood in downtown Dallas, Texas known as Deep Ellum, which was home to blues musicians including Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson, Lead Belly, and Bill Neely.
The first known recording was made by the Cofer Brothers in 1923 under the band name the Georgia Crackers with the title "The Georgia Black Bottom" on OKeh Records (OKeh 45111).

      @@samhall7509Sam, are you Old Woolie? And why can't I find much online about the band? Is it new, old, just a group of buddies, a one man show?

      @@samhall7509I just read the answer to everything I asked in another comment on another song. I'm so happy to have found you buddy, you are more NEEDED than you will ever know! We have a lot of new artists that they call the modern outlaws genre and I like some of them don't get me wrong but they still aren't Waylon and cash, they are still following some kinda path that keeps them away from the true roots a lot of us are craving and wanting. I understand a lot of what you are doing are covers but I'd still rather listen to you than plow boy in a white Ford,,, um I mean cowboy on a white horse 😂 and I think Stephen Wilson Jr is putting all the long hair big beards to shame right now as far as roots and tear your heart out lyrics. Anyway I'm nobody just a 40 yr old worn out truck driver thats two decades past my actual age in life, hard times and set backs, still haven't learned a damn thing. All that said my opinion about anything doesn't matter. But if you go on tour and you get a bus it would be a honour and a unbelievable opportunity if I could be your bus driver. 20 year CDL class A and a clean mvr. No warrants and I don't drink anymore. But anyway please keep doing what you're doing, we appreciate and love your music,I share your stuff with anyone I think will appreciate it ❤️

      @@ericbest9562 Wow man, thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I really enjoy putting a different spin/sound on these old songs yet keeping them somewhat true to the original most of the time. As for going on the road, that's not gonna happen. I'm a 68 year old retired mechanic who likes staying home just fine. Yeah, I'm gonna keep making music as long as I can. And I do have long hair and a big beard. I've had them for years, not someone trying to have a "look", it's just me. Thanks again man.

    • @ericbest9562
      @ericbest9562 Місяць тому

      @samhall7509 10-4 I have a beard down to my chest as well I was just referring to the look they all seem to try and have to look different from the pop country crowd. But like you probably Ive had it for a long time. You certainly don't sound that age, I'd have guessed you in your early to mid 50s . I really meant everything I said, it's nice to pull your stuff up on UA-cam and just let it play while I'm riding. I feel like cigarette machine and trucker speed were just for me personally, I think they were Fred Eaglesmith songs or one was , I wasn't familiar with him until I found you. I hope you keep them coming, originals and covers. I'd love to hear more Waylon stuff, I always really liked his stuff that didn't get as much radio play as some of the others, waymore blues, Cedartown Georgia (I'm not to far from there), Do it Again he covered from Steelie Dan. Hell I could right a book of request lol but just keep them coming!

    I'm not sure how I came across this song, but it's genius. In encapsulates both sadness and struggle with the All American ethos of hard work and hard drugs, and the cycle that perpetuates the image of...well...the Rust Belt experience....sorry, what was the question, I'm high as hell....

      Yes, Sam Hall is "Old Woolie". Sam Hall is also an alias for the songwriter mentioned in the description above. The Rusty Blades are a fictional band that I made up for these recordings. I play all instruments and do all vocals and it is all recorded in my garage. Thanks for listening, glad you enjoy this stuff.

      Who wrote this song originally?

    • @samhall7509
      @samhall7509 Рік тому

      I wrote this one about 5 years ago. Here's a rough live version of it by a band I used to front shortly after I wrote it. ua-cam.com/video/-OveGie-0jo/v-deo.htmlsi=7cPhByPWiIJt6tbL Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate that. As for those other Eaglesmith songs you mentioned, no, I hadn't thought of doing them. I find if I pick up a guitar and try to do a specific song it rarely works out. What works best is just messing around on the guitar doing bits and pieces of songs, then one will eventually click and I'll come up with a groove that feels good and proceed from there. I try not to sound like the original as much as possible, I've played in several bands over the last 45 years and tired of trying to sound exactly like the record. That's what people want to hear in the bars and such though.@@parkerbirdsell4194
