The Committee on Global Thought was established by Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger in 2006 with the mission of enhancing the university’s engagement with issues of global importance. To understand the changing conditions of our contemporary world, we require new concepts and categories that pertain to and are derived from global phenomena as they are rapidly evolving. Not only does this challenge require a transnational perspective but it also demands thinking across the established academic disciplines, since issues such as global governance, varieties of democracy, economic inequality, new communication technologies, and diversity of cultures and religions often fall between or across conventional disciplinary borders. The Committee is therefore committed to cross-disciplinary and transnational approaches in order to address the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first-century world.

How to reclaim the place of knowledge production, or to reinvent its meaning, at a time when globality in its various, contradictory forms is experiencing a crisis on several fronts? In what ways, might we still speak of s...

Reimagining Global: Are Extreme Crises the Only Way Forward?
Переглядів 372 роки тому
The world today is more polarized and at-risk than in decades. The optimistic scenario envisioned by the proponents of economic globalization at the beginning of the new millennium has now given way to a more pessimistic worldview. The many existential threats to our universe-natural and manmade-require global collaboration if we have any chance of success. How, then, should we consider the con...

If Biden's democrats wanted to prevent a "Trump led destruction of democracy" (hypocrisy much..) they wouldn't have completely gutted the infrastructure bill. They represent blue monied interests, not red, and not the people.
We forget that China was the largest economy in 1820. Then the feeding of opium poppy wax by the English and then the opium war's destroyed the state..

Borders must be closed. Aggressors must be deported. Birthrate must be increased. For example Myanmar deports aggressors successfully. Do not bring sea pirates to Europe. If sea pirates want to drown let they drown.
Where we can find presentations?
Thank you so much for sharing this talk! "Global money" and its (geo)political implications might be one of the most important topics available. We have a panel of distinct scholars and speakers that is billantly moderated by Katharina Pistor, there is noticeable care with everyone speaking for making the system serve more people than it does today. The panel puts up more questions than answers - just great! Perry and Adam are taking apart the mediocre maths and bad statistics that have had s**t to do with real world legal and economic actuality having masked themselves in the last 4 decades with the label "economics"; we are 8 years after our 1929; the whole video is online; it's free. And it has 224 views and 4 likes including mine.
I've been trying to interest the Columbia intellectual community for years in the highly productive approach to global thinking possible from a natural systems view... (taking a scientific view of nature made of individual systems that work by themselves). It's heretical.. OK, but among other things it does solve the puzzle of what's been wrong with the financial system for as long as we've had one, a brief description of which was voted a Top Comment on a Forbes article on the subject. I've added some background to it in a post to my RNS Journal. synapse9.com/signals/2016/04/21/next-thing-in-ny/
