Renault truck,Bedford RL and generator update
Quite interesting to watch. I just got my mits on a later (89 I think) CT90, so just figuring out what to do. Planning on big bore and a hotter cam, but not much on the small intake ports on youtube. Good to see someone actually talking about that as per the other one of your vids.
Not an actual banana. I am quite disappointed.
Following this closely. We're in the process of purchasing an off grid property and this might be exactly what we're after in a few months time.
Hi, thanks for your comment. It will be a few months before this is available as much testing needs doing before I fire the parts cannon. I will be doing an update video shortly on progress.
"Why not just buy a new one?" Well, that thing will eat any old oil and it'd love some woodgas. It would probably run daily or another 50 years. If you install an ozone generator in the intake air stream, after the filter, it will run better. Ozone (o3) is highly reactive. The o3 bond is very unstable which makes the extra o want to jump off and bond with something else. That 'something else' is the fuel.
You're so right in what you say about modern "foreign-built" generators and their longevity. LLL - Long Live Listers! (And Gardners!!). Am slightly worried about your pulmonary consumption of diesel micro-particulates. It cannot be good to be inhaling all that smoke indoors.....
THE MAGIC OF MOLTEN METAL! NICE OLD BIKE
Doesn't sound healthy all that tapping
Lovely generator! We need something like this….
Hi, they are out there, it's just finding a good one before you add the modern control system.
You are SO right about frequent testing of generators, same goes for UPS systems for that matter. They are NOT a fit and forget system.
Sounds good…
Good Work. What make of transfer box is in the MK.
"Mechanical jug to pour it in" 😂 . Well that took me back to the early 1970's when I used to drive an RL in my army days. Mine developed a knackered choke in the field one winter morning and refused to start. Got the REME (Rough Engineering Made Easy) Vehicle Mechanic to take a look and he advised a temporary fix. The fix was to open the in cab engine cover when cold starting and trickle petrol into the top of the carburettor from a washed out bean tin , therefore making the mixture rich that way! Worked like that for a few weeks until fixed permanantly. A mechanical jug indeed 👍🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for your kind words, Thames trader, you don't see many of them at shows down here theses days. If you think you can do it justice go for it, far to much stuff has been scrapped and lost for ever. I would like to do more videos but keeping the bills paid gets in the way.
You have a great channel with really interesting projects & you obviously know what you're doing. You deserve many, many, more views & subs. There's a Thames Trader mk2 (there's a mk1 too but the mk2 is tn better nick) in a scrap yard near where I live, I'm itching to buy it. It deserves preserving not scrapping. All the best.
hi got one for sale with radio cab on the back
Hi, no, it's meant to go in a building with ventilation for the radiator or in a well ventilated barn.
Nice Machine..does it come with an Enclosure?
Nice, I run a wee two cylinder Lister just like that every Friday at a hill top transmitter station, only it is hooked to a pump for the sprinkler system. Sounds the same though.😀
hi, that's interesting, what transmitter station was that? I'm a radio ham so I'm interested in radio related stuff.
@@outbackmotorcyclesandengin867 That would be the Mount Kau Kau transmitter station near Wellington, NZ. Terrestrial TV, multiple FM radio, Maritime radio etc come from up there. They have two larger diesel engines coupled to generators, a Volvo and a mothballed VM. The little Lister does the pump for the sprinklers, it gets a manual start once a week to keep it ready in case of fire.
It does run well. But looking forward to the RL trying a hill again with the clean carb.
Those 2.5 DI Ford Engines are good..I have one in an LDV Convoy...starts quickly and pulls well.
Hi, your one is probably later than mine. My one is a pre banana engine, still a di with less power. Good old reliable plodder. Thanks for your comment.
My bike sometimes goes into 1st but barely and only goes into 2nd no 3rd gear what do you think the problem is
Nice workshop and some decent machines
Do you think with the state of the piston & cylinder there was so much "blow by" causing the crankcase to pressurise enogh so there was leakage round the crank door and that was why the chap you got the engine from was convinced that was the problem? them 18>14 mm adapters are a good idea I'll bear the green spark plug company in mind for old ignition stuff.
hi, to be honest I'm not sure. you couldn't hear the blow by, only it chuffing out the exhaust valve.
Can you not spray wax oil in the parts you can't paint.
hi, I will do that once I've painted it, just need the weather to warm up so I can paint it
always remember banging your elbow when going to fourth gear
YOUR NOT ALONE.....WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE OUR LIFESYLE TOO.......KEEP YOUR STIFF UPPER LIP....AS SHALL WE....HERE IN AMERICA......KEEP IN TOUCH.
It warms my heart to see an old girl getting much needed attention. I traveled many miles in these vehicles as a conscript in the SADF during the 1970's, I was a 'Tiffy' (technical services corps) and we repaired / maintained our old Bulldog Bedfords to keep then going as best we could.
Brings back some memories seeing this, I drove them back in the 70's when I first joined the services.
Haha Lights,,beware flashin any truck in,, if you catch the ignition and flip it off !!! prepair for a loud bang followed by flames out the exhaust ,,next you are going to need a good excuse to your WO on why you,v got a big split in the exhaust
If my memory serves me right ,flat out you should be good for 65 mph.. I remember racing back from RAF Lyneham in the middle of the night ,back too RAF Henlow,,O my goodness those where the days!!!!
These RL Bedford trucks bring memories, back in the day they were in service in a number of countries - mostly ex-British colonies - in police forces, military, utilities etc. Growing up in Uganda🛖 in the 60's - early 70's, they were in army service there but strangely non were in civilian service. Later in the early 70's we moved to the Arabian Gulf, Dubai🌴 and saw many in civilian use as well as the water and electricity authorities, municipality, airport tenders/firefighters🚒 etc and the Trucial Oman Scouts. Most of the place was desert and the 4WD came in handy, and once even saw a local auto paint shop use one as a compressor unit for painting! They tapped into the brake airtank. Very hardy truck.🚚
Hi, let's hope you're right. I live off grid out in the middle of nowhere, I don't do cities. I'm a country boy born and bread.
Nice one!. Love seeing old bits of kit beong given another go! 🙂
Nice project and nice work. Apart from that, please stop listening to., and believing the doom laden conspiracy theorist morons out there whose only interest is attracting traffic on their sites. 15 minute cities are no threat to car usage, but rather to save those of us who live in cities from having to use a car to get to work/shop/leisure activities - which from my perspective, as don't have a car, will be great. Anyone living outside of an urban environment is likely to still have to own a car.
Have you looked at the EU legislation now being consulted, evil I think it's called, it's all about forcing people to have "green" cars, China is the winner, the west erases it's entire vehicle culture. It's not scaremongering, it's fact, it's on the books NOW, and as the UK left the EU in name only, it will apply here too.
Progress is always satisfying..thanks
hi the timing is 5 degrees BTDC on flywheel, used to have one.
According to the official bedford RL workshop manual, the army used as I have one it's 10 degrees btdc and your right there's a mark on the flywheel. I did check it just in case the mark is wrong. It's a fueling issue as the carb was full of dirt. It runs fine until you boot it, and then it just leans out.
I agree, I might be biased as a retired castrol rep, but oil n filters are Always cheaper than spare parts , labour and inconvenience !!! Greetings from AUS
Hi Robert, thanks for your comment, I find it fascinating that my videos are being watched in every corner of the world. David
I am driver Bedford truck 20 year model 1978
ffs no music, why must you be told
Easier to drive than the earlier WW2 QL,I should imagine as this had a crash box .
A couple of winebottles later they came up with this....Probably the similar shit engine as in the HY witch has no oilfilter and has to be servised every 250km...
Hmmm. Maybe not - looks a bit small...
At around 6 and a bit minutes, you have the engine out and on the bench. Behind you is a green engine on some sort of frame - is that one of the US Army/Chrysler outboard air-cooled flat-fours?
Hi Andy, it's a onan cck flat twin 3.5kw generator, 240v uk spec. Runs at 1500 rpm and is now up and running. They made various versions of these so you have to read the spec plate to see what it is. They go up to 5kw, some are high frequency and some are dc only, but they all look the same.
Cheers for that.@@outbackmotorcyclesandengin867
Did the French go out of their way to make their vehicles weird looking?
The French are weird looking!
Weird or practical ?
The French always went their own way I think. The UK had the Ford Prefect.... The French had the Citroen DS! Unlike the UK, the French still have a Motor Industry and an Aircraft industry. I think they can be very annoying as a nation, but they still retain their own identity. I'm a Brit but I have a sneaky admiration for their cussedness!
Well said.@@MrDesalex
Yes
Hi from France, you're right war time cars and trucks were subject of sabotage in the factories.I remember an old man who worked in the Poissy SIMCA factory,he told me how they did tricks to sabotage their job.In particular, the did wrong with the door strikers causing the opening while driving.
I know these trucks, they are very hardy and capable off-roaders. I have to wonder though about the posterior placement of the gearshift lever and how awkward it is to use on the go. Moreover by today's standards it must be very expensive to run, as someone has estimated one UKP per mile in petrol costs.
Beautiful truck,my son has restored 2 and in the process of finishing a 3rd. Well done.
Exilent work thanks from Nepal
The base plate had to be replaced yearly in the Lucas distributor it always threw the ignition timing along with the points gap jumping to fifty thou
Narrow lanes for a vehicle of that size. What body are you going to put on it?
Hi, it had a box body as its ex bomb squad but it's was rotten beyond repair. We are putting a later box on that will be painted to look correct.
