Episode 4.1: Meditation Retreat
Aloha friends! It's been a minute but here's a new episode beginning Season 4 of the podcast. I recently spent 5 days at a meditation immersion retreat hosted by the famous spiritual teacher and writer Deepak Chopra. It was an awesome experience. So Seth and I got together and did a 'part 1' discussion about the experience and my takeaways.
We'll be doing our best to post an episode bi-weekly for the summer. Cheers! Please leave your comments on the Facebook page!

    The Nicaean Creed says that the uncreated God was born to a human mother and became a man. That assumes the Earth and man are ultimately sacred. That's at least what I got out of it after one reading.

    As a former atheist who was raised evangelical and who "returned to the fold", may I just point out that, at around 27 minutes, during your discussion of "real experiences", you've contradicted yourself. Either your childhood experiences in the Christian faith were substantiated by the truth claims of historic Biblical Christianity or they weren't. You can't have it both ways, and there's a certain tacit smugness inherent in suggesting that you can.

    • @mypilgrimage2843
      @mypilgrimage2843 Рік тому

      Aloha, I guess I understand your confusion seeing that you maybe never deconstructed your faith? Saying, "You can't have it both ways" doesn't actually mean you can't. It simply means you don't understand HOW a person can have both experiences. Because I'm not lying when I'm describing the experience in the podcast, and I'm certainly not trying to be smug. I'm doing my best to describe what can be called a paradoxical experience of having experienced something real in my Christian faith and then now being able to see it for what I understand it to be now. Be curious, my friend. It's easier than labeling someone "smug" from your armchair so you can stop trying to understand where they're coming from.

    In your conversation you both are mentioning "your tribe now" so is this a way of understanding where a person is coming from by a "tribe" that they identify with? To better stimulate conversation and understanding? What tribe is the Almighty with?

    • @mypilgrimage2843
      @mypilgrimage2843 2 роки тому

      To answer your question, I think we can acknowledge the obvious: the Almighty is always on the side of whoever is crafting the story. We have thousands of denominations (tribes) of Christianity in the US and the world. We have thousands of religions (tribes) on the planet. All of them, in some form or another, claim a divine right or authority, essentially saying, "The Almighty/Divine/God/Universe is on our side." As we often say on the podcast, we are all the hero of our own story. And as one of our favorite authors says, "We create our gods and then our gods create us." The conversation we had with Joshua simply recognizes that we all are a part of a tribe and we move from one tribe to another when our belief systems shift, as they often do when we expand and grow.

      @@mypilgrimage2843 thank you for your timely response. I'm not sure if you answered my question? Which tribe is the Almighty with? Who is with His tribe? I will leave you with the scripture that brings me great blessing confidence and peace. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” - John 3:16-21

      @@k9centurionkilo765 we definitely answered your question, though you apparently didn't hear it. When you say "the Almighty," you are laying out in the subtext a very clear idea of who and what God is. When you ask, "what tribe is the Almighty in?" you already think you know the answer. But of course, you are proving our point: your pre-populated answer to that unanswerable question places you squarely in the same tribe as "the Almighty" as you have defined it. It is this lack of self-awareness that keeps us all trapped in judgement of each other. It would be better for you to acknowledge that the Almighty is beyond your ability to define and your true Tribe is whichever tribe you choose (or no tribe at all). And God goes with us wherever we go, whatever tribe we choose. I would guess that perhaps you and John would be in the same tribe?

      @@mypilgrimage2843 Again thank you for your thoughtfulness of your preception things as you see them. As you explore your new found faith and your journey, as the path that you've laid out, for as you said "you are in control of your journey" you make it as you will. I have heard there is maybe 40.000 different denominations, or even religions that claim they're the Almighty as their deity in one shape of form or another. As you have said, many persons in life have been hurt and devastated and ruined because of religion. It might be appropriate that the writer of Ecclesiastes has come to a conclusion of a matter in experiencing all aspects of life, physical, spiritual, emotional, mental experience in life. Please consider his words. All that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor and this was my reward for all my labor. Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun. So I turned to consider wisdom, madness and folly; for what will the man do who will come after the king except what has already been done? And I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. The wise man’s eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one fate befalls them both. Then I said to myself, “As is the fate of the fool, it will also befall me. Why then have I been extremely wise?” So I said to myself, “This too is vanity.” For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man as with the fool, inasmuch as in the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man and the fool alike die! So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was grievous to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind. Thus I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, for I must leave it to the man who will come after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun. This too is vanity. Therefore I completely despaired of all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun. When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge and skill, then he gives his legacy to one who has not labored with them. This too is vanity and a great evil. For what does a man get in all his labor and in his striving with which he labors under the sun? Because all his days his task is painful and grievous; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is vanity. There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and tell himself that his labor is good. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God. For who can eat and who can have enjoyment without Him? For to a person who is good in His sight He has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, while to the sinner He has given the task of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good in God’s sight. This too is vanity and striving after wind. - Ecclesiastes 2:10-26 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. - Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Shalom

    Thank goodness. For too long the West has become so obsessed with sin and then of course punishment. It is this very uptake of a collective conscious of centuries that we have wars, that we can say oh they are sinful so we must punish them. This thought process is so integrated in human psyche. I find it utterly heart breaking because all of the damage, the hatred, the bigotry and the fear in the world comes from this paradigm of sin.

    I went through a faith deconstruction myself but remained a Christian. I do feel like Christianity is done wrong in a lot of places and unfortunately it creates a lot of false converts. I recently realize that I was saved because Jesus has revealed himself to me in a great way. I think it’s sad to see Christians go through that but it’s more sad to see people who realize that they weren’t a Christian from the start. We can try to justify our feelings of emotions as a way to see the truth of God but in reality that’s really not what Christianity teaches. Cares mad at gospel and gospels with emotion is very dangerous to teach because of this very reason. Living in Christ is not really a feeling it’s a belief, it’s not something you can do on your own or believe on your own. It’s a hard pill for people to swallow. It’s interesting how someone who did not have the ability to speak before coming to Christ now has the ability to speak even better than most people. I didn’t ask for Christ to save me but he did. Now I’m on my way to become a pastor and teach people the right ways of Christianity. Not everyone comes to Christ and not everyone is saved because people would rather believe in their own logic then believe in Christ and that is true. I used to be an atheist before I was a Christian and I know full well what you men are going through. It doesn’t mean you will become Christians because only God can put faith in your heart no one else can do that not even yourself. All I can tell use if you haven’t experienced the grace of God then you have not experienced the Christian God.

      @@mypilgrimage2843 Because not everybody desires to believe in God and not everybody desires to follow God. It is some thing that can only be generated by God because how can you believe in something by just believing in it. Non believing Christians or even Christians have a hard time understanding the sovereignty of God. I couldn’t tell you why God chooses some people entirely and why some aren’t chosen. Other than they just have zero desire to follow God. Every person is spiritually dead and not alive and only God can resurrect those who desire to be resurrected. Not every professing Christian is a Christian and usually it’s those who put emotions and feelings into their faith. Faith is not about feelings it’s about the truth and believing in the truth. Faith has a lot more logic to it than many churches perceive it to have. I consider myself a reformed Christian and I understand that many people asked this question and the truth is a relationship with God is very spiritual. Without the relationship and that desperate need of fulfillment through face you will not feel full unless you are brought a lie by God. That is not something anyone can do because we are saved by grace through faith and that experience of grace will show you who God is. It doesn’t mean that a Christian can’t stumble or have issues with unbelief it just means not living life like a ritual that you have to do a bunch of things but understanding this relationship with God is what truly builds the foundation of truth in your life. I think it’s so missed in the church that many get falsely converted to Christianity without really understanding the decision that they’re going to make. You can destroy someone’s salvation when you come to God or think that you have come to God in the wrong way. The reason I went through a deconstruction is because I was entirely wrong about the church and I was entirely wrong about the way a relationship with God is and I am so glad that I was put through very challenging time where I was ousted by the church and excommunicated for things that I didn’t even do or things that I did right. It’s not about right or wrong or what we perceive as the way things are. The church is so simple that no church entirely does it 100%. The church is a place of community for Christians to love one another and to follow the example that Jesus set 2000 years ago. No church does that perfectly and there will not be a church that does that perfectly. But Christians are supposed to treat one another as if you were a close family member that is the kind of love God wants all Christians to have towards one another. And we are to treat outsiders the very same way, there is not a single human being that loves people that way other than Jesus Christ. And to love people that way is what can strive and create peace amongst people if we just did those things. Unfortunately we are humans and we are naturally resistant towards loving people in that way. And knowing the truth has helped me get an even greater faith and respect for God and his word. Because his word explains what humanity is like and what humanity‘s gonna continually be like until the earth is revived and reborn spiritually.

      @@isosoriharrison9556 Okay, follow me on the logic: you're saying that only God can make someone believe but the reason God doesn't choose to make someone believe is because they don't desire to believe, right? Then you say you "couldn't tell" me "why God chooses some people entirely and why some aren't chosen." But you still choose to call God loving, even though by your logic, God is by the inverse "choosing" to send some people to hell for eternity and others not. Do you follow me? You say that his word explains the why, and yet you also say you "don't know why." Because by your logic, God seems to be like a cruel monarch who randomly chooses some to live and some to die. @@mypilgrimage2843 I can’t tell you why God chooses people because by the logic is we don’t really know what’s going on in someone’s heart. What I can say is that there are just people that don’t want to be saved and they don’t desire to be saved. Why would God save people who don’t desire to be saved by the one that created them? It’s like a loving father and their son? Why would a father go after a son that doesn’t want to have a relationship with them? Loving fathers will always be open to having that relationship but you can’t have a relationship with a loving father when you don’t desire to do so. We don’t know who gets damned to hell, we don’t know who God judges to go to eternal damnation. If we try to use our own logic and judge people it only proves our own judgement of ourselves. We are sinners judging sinners, how would we know what someone truly believes? How do we even know believers are living up to their expectations? The truth is, even those who claim to follow God only follow their own logic. We are all under the same judgement of the law and those who choose to live by their logic and understanding will not desire to be saved by God. Because they only believe in themselves or the culture they are surrounded by. God has the power to save those who first desire it and once they desire a savior can God fill their heart that’s willing to listen with belief. However, we don’t know the human heart because we aren’t God. The problem I think is we judge people too much and we don’t examine our own selves before judging others. God desires everyone to be saved and God doesn’t take pleasure on those who receive judgement based on their own logic of life and whom they serve. Just as a painter paints a painting, the stroke of the brush is guided by the steady hand of its creator, the creator can freely put in any painting that is pleasing to the painter. If God is that painter, God can freely create anything in the painting. People by the nature of sin have no desire to follow the creator and God allows this to happen because of his grace we all deserve death and damnation to hell. However, God gives chances for people to desire him but most choose not too, this doesn’t just exclude those not in the church but those who think they are doing the works of God.

    Taking this quote from Pelagius, “Everywhere narrow shafts of divine light pierce the veil that separates heaven from earth…The presence of God’s spirit in all living things is what makes them beautiful; and if we look with God’s eyes, nothing is ugly.” - Nothing is ugly? Jesus wept when he saw the suffering in this world (a world that was separated from God when man decided that God was not enough and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil). It is blasphemous to say that God is in everything and nothing in this world is ugly. God is saddened by the darkness of human choices. He sent Jesus to rebuild our relationship with Him and to inspire us to turn away from sin and walk in the light of Christ. Everything that is of God is beautiful! Everything that is of the world needs to be redeemed and submitted to the cleansing blood of Christ. To be aware of our weakness in sin is to constantly seek God's face in childlike dependence and humility. I think, ultimately, people need to be pointed back to God. As God's creation, we are cherished by God in a way that we, as His children, cannot fully conceive or believe. Our relationship with God is sacred and his creation is sacred (I agree with this); God appointed humanity to be stewards of His creation. We are to be good stewards of our relationship with each other and good stewards of the natural world that surrounds us and nourishes us. Jesus said the two most important commandments are TO LOVE GOD AND OTHERS. Understand that we are to love and serve the LORD God FIRST and all else will flow from our love of God. It is important to note that the LORD deserves ALL that we have and ALL the glory because ONLY his faithful love is perfect and endures forever (Ps. 109). "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14 We are NOT God and we were never meant to be. We are to acknowledge that we have a sinful nature, we are far from perfect, and are sheep in need of a Shepherd. To be a Christian means to acknowledge that JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. All other spiritual teachings that create idols above the ONE TRUE LIVING GOD AND HIS SON JESUS are false teachings. My point is this: God is deserving of all the glory. We are not to become conceited or prideful, in danger of putting ourselves above God, but we need to acknowledge that only God is perfect and good and that we need Him.

      Hello Nicole. I recognize your particular religious belief structure. I've heard and seen it many times. If you are satisfied with what you believe, and obviously you are, then I wish you peace and blessings along your path. Like Pelagius, I see the creation as nearly bursting with the Sacred Presence. As a result, I've spent a lifetime searching for those individuals who saw, and see, the same Presence in all of creation. Pelagius is certainly one of those, but there are several others. Yes, human beings are infinitely flawed. We are an infantile species. We have such a long way to go. Sadly, religions of all stripes have acted in the most heinous and barbaric manner throughout human history. Professing a belief system means nothing when greed, hatred and arrogance are the guiding principles. Fortunately there are many examples of individuals who saw the radiant beauty in all things, and left a record in writings and poems.

      Nicole I pray for you to see the truth of God's love and all things for all creation every person. Nothing should be punished nor judged for they know not what they do we know not what we do. Without love we have nothing. I used to believe exactly as you did but I could no longer do so I would rather be in hell with all of the good people if that was an actual place that I believe existed. There is no original sin only original perfection God saw all things he made and they were good. 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️

      I’ve listened to several interviews with Josh now. When asked what he believes, he avoids labels, including Christian, agnostic, atheist, or whatever. Seems to me that he’s figuring out who he is and what he believes at mid-life since he never examined his beliefs before. He went through a lot of bad stuff as an Evangelical superstar who had a big fall from grace. I’d love to see him return to the faith. He’s still got a lot to offer the world.

      Hi Kelly! Thanks for watching the episode with Josh Harris. It was a great discussion. We realize you're making a faith statement here and that you're most likely triggered by the idea that your beliefs could anything but absolutely true. Our hope for you is the same as it is for everyone who listens: that you will find the fullest expression of joy and freedom in your life, be it from addiction or other kinds of suffering. For Josh, it was a religious belief system that held that expression back. His journey of freedom has been a beautiful thing to watch and we think it is blessed. Thanks again for listening!

      @@mypilgrimage2843 , i have no idea why UA-cam brought back your video as a suggestion, but you should tell them you don’t want people seeing it or else they may comment and disagree with you and become “trolls” by default. Unfortunately, here we are…. So, i will just make the point that all Josh did was exchange one religious system for another. Hes not any freer in the respect that he knows anything more about his reality. He just exchanged one lie for another. Also, after reading your comments to others , you seem uncomfortable with certainty, but then your willingness to challenge assertions of certainty undercuts your whole argument. One cant argue, or debate unless they have objective reality from which they can argue from. Otherwise, its like arguing non-sense like the smell of a color or the heaviest number. It would be just non-sense. You sound like a subjectivist but when you deem that Josh has made a “better” choice or is going in the “right” direction, or that anyone who questions his choice is “wrong”, you immediately cut the legs out of your worldview implying an objective reality to appeal to that you are “right” and they are “wrong”. A true subjectivist would not challenge a person’s assertion that they are right because they dont know, and if they claim to know, then they contradict themselves by being certain that someone is “wrong” and they are “right”.

    Are you looking forward to a time of reconstruction? To simply deconstruct and automatically discount everything christian or spiritual or even religion is rather sad.

    • @mypilgrimage2843
      @mypilgrimage2843 3 роки тому

      Reconstruction is unavoidable as its part of the psychological process that we go through after deconstruction takes place. The psyche begins to build a new narrative with new rules and boundaries and a new world view. In Many cases, this new world view is opposed to the person’s former world view. We can’t speak to Joshua’s experience of reconstruction but we know that he has been working in a space of love and forgiveness. It’s beautiful to witness.

    • @mypilgrimage2843
      @mypilgrimage2843 3 роки тому

      Aloha Dan... if we can challenge you a bit more... even the greatest philosophers understood that "truth" was a debatable concept. Indeed, it seems to be part of the birthright of an enlightened or self-aware individual to acknowledge the subjectivity of the human experience, including our beliefs about God, the Universe, Eternity, etc. We need only look at the evidence around us to see that the human race has not figured out the Truth, but merely the truth as we see it. So the feeling you are experiencing of being "afraid and insecure" is not a warning but an invitation to dig deeper. Because the teaching goes like this: Knock, and the door will be opened to you. Seek and you will find. So we seek... we keep knocking. This is the narrow path that Jesus spoke of. The Path of the Pilgrim, the Seeker.

    4:05 This really resonates with me and where I am right now. I don't define Christianity as being what I do anymore. I am in the middle, I am open to new ideas and other viewpoints and yet I still find certain aspects of Christianity valid. I still believe in God, Jesus, but I have to wonder what the whole point is anymore - because I don't think American Christianity knows at all what Jesus' purpose was.

      Well, if you would put aside what you want the Bible to say, and accept what it actually says, you would have clarification. As it is, if you are not looking for truth earnestly, you will never find it. Deuteronomy 4:29. Joshua harris is engaging in pseudo-intellectualism because, it’s not that answers aren’t there to weigh, it’s that he doesn’t want the answers to inconvenience him.

      @@OyarsuofMars "put aside what you want the Bible to say and accept what it actually says... you would have clarification..." Man. You don't seem to understand anything we're discussing. Why are you here? And who made you the arbiter of truth? Have you read the book of Deuteronomy in the original Hebrew? Do you have a PhD in ancient Hebrew and have studied the Torah so that you have complete cultural context? Or are you one of those unhelpful evangelical Christians who hunts around the internet trying to call out those you perceive to be heretical so you can avoid dealing with your own subconscious doubts? And by the way, how's your porn addiction going? Is your literal reading of ancient texts helping you deal with that?

      @@mypilgrimage2843 , wow. That is a very strange reply. What if I told you that I have had multiple prostatic infections that have have sent me to multiple specialists, and that a porn addiction is basically impossible for me since the last thing on my mind is sex( for reasons I don’t care to get into), what would be your next accusation? Do you want to make fun of me being an orphan next? Maybe you can find some esoteric verses about being a bastard child. You might get a kick out of that. As it is, your assumption that you can’t understand concepts unless you read about them in the original language is a strange theory and would cut off the majority of people from the fields of science, history, and literature. As far as trolling, give me a break. “You tube” makes “recommendations” for many videos, not just yours, and it seems that people who post videos on “UA-cam” want them to be watched. If they don’t want comments, that can turn off the comments feature. If you don’t want comments then either don’t post videos or don’t allow comments. Don’t complain that people watched a video you posted of your own free will.

      @@OyarsuofMars This isn't a complaint about people watching videos of their own free will. We're happy to receive comments on here and we're happy to comment back. The suffering you've endured is extensive. It's sad to see that your response to that suffering is spending time commenting on UA-cam videos where people are sharing their honest stories of wrestling with doubt and finding love and joy and healing. This is the definition of trolling. If you don't agree with a video, move on. Your impulse to comment with a bible verse out of context is the last thing this community would find helpful.
