Light Lens Lab SPII x Moment 1.33x Anamorphic Test Footage
Had a few minutes to test out the new FX6 V4.0 firmware. It’s also an excuse to film a little around the apartment 😂
The internal 1.33x de-squeeze is a joy to work with!
It helps so much with critical focus and setting up a composition.
This lens pairing of the Light Lens Lab SPII with the Moment 1.33x anamorphic adapter imparts a really interesting texture to the images.
I am hoping to explore this pairing more on a few upcoming projects, but I did want to share the images as a reference to anyone who might be looking for examples of this pairing.

Sony FX6 - Prepping the Vegetables

An overly dramatic documentation of dinner. Just received the FX6 a few days ago, and this is the first thing I've captured with it. Just testing out how it feels to film with, and I have to say, I'm very happy wit the end results. I had the Sony A7siii for almost 10 months now, and not once did I have the urge to pick up the camera and film something on a whim. There is something to be said ab...
Modify your Pelican SD Card Case for CFexpress type A cards

The new CFexpress Type A cards are blazing fast, and incredibly durable, but I haven't seen many cases for them. While I was getting ready for a shoot this morning I noticed I could easily modify the Pelican SD Card case, that I already owned, with just a razor and under 5 minutes of my time. This is most useful for those who already have one of these Pelican SD Card cases, or something similar...

I own this lens, and I also happen to own the complete Cooke SP3 6-lens set. I can guarantee 100% that this 'replica' wannabe Cooke doesn’t come close to what an actual Cooke lens looks like. Sorry, but it’s just not worth it."
1:18 like the bag! What is it?☺️
It's huge! ... compared with the Summicron. 😶
WOW, GORGEOUS! Does it comes in EF-Mount?...
It comes in Leica M mount. Unfortunately I believe the flange distance of EF will not allow you to adapt an M mount lens. There are affordable adapters for the new RF mount from canon, due to the reduced distance to the sensor.
Hey, looking into these pickups. Any recomendations?
They are great, super clean with a full spectrum tone. Neck pickup has piano like qualities, and the bridge has a lot of bit without feeling to brittle
Wow daytime photos of your garden come on man be a little bit more original do something different

@@jliang70 You''ve obviously never shot chrome film!

I filmed with the speed panchro pl with my Leica SL2-S and it blows me away about the softness and details in the pictures. Cook reinvented the panchros : CP3. Can't wait to test them. ;)
Are you happy with the moment? i have a cinelux/rapido setup and being 2x its stuffed full of character , flares, bokeh, focus squuezes etc, it looks fantastic, but its huge, hard to setup, heavy, and I find I don't use it much due to these factors. thinking of selling and getting a moment, but worried I wont be satisfied with the 1.33 after being used to 2x
I like the ease of use, and the fact I can easily use 82mm filters on it the adapter, but 1.33 will never have the character of the 2x The moment is subtle in comparison. The added characteristics are there, but it doesn’t screen anamorphic in the bokeh. You only get that at closest focus
That’s not really a small lens if you’re on about M lenses. Sold this immediately for a profit (of course) since I got mine direct from China. My Summilux does better and still more compact.
People going on about lenses is like people talking about hints of “cinnamon” and “chocolate” in their $5 Trader Joe's wine.
Thank you for doing this, I've just found the LLL SPII and I was wondering about an anamorphic adapter and how it would look. Great job!
I'm so glad this was helpful! I highly recommend a lens support on 15mm rods. Thats what I was using on the fx6 and it felt solid as a rock!
IMO. Any old prime lens blows this out of the water. Crap lens. Wildly overpriced.
A lens is just a tool. As long what you use helps to inspire you to go out and shoot, use what ever sparks joy ✨
@@Plaughrey Sure. I just felt it necessary to note my opinion. Because it really just seems like you're selling an overpriced item to beginners. This should be $200 max. A savvy shooter could pay $15 (+adapter cost) for a similar feeling vintage 50mm at their local garage sale. Blowing my mind that this is listed for $1050. I understand that it's your tool and you like it (totally fair). But woof! I wouldn't feel good recommending it.
@@backyardwindow great point! I did not realize that the video came off as a recommendation for beginners. Not who I was aiming for at all. When I got started in photography I did exactly as you said. I picked up as many inexpensive lenses as I could from flea markets or vintage shops and adapted to my camera for as little money as I could manage, and it taught me so much about photography early on. I’ll be sure to specify an experience level in my recommendation in future videos, or maybe include a little bit more about my journey to help give context.
@@Plaughrey I think your video is perfectly fine in explaining your own finding on this lens. I have not used this LLL lens and the one I have used is LLL elcan. Yes, it is around $700 not really suited to everyone's budget and can be more expensive than some of the vintage lens. I think from my experience vintage lens ( I have four M42 mount lenses, 3 Nikon AI-s) and also own Voitglander 58mm F1.4 Ai-s version, I think LLL elcan has its own unique characters that endear itself to one who have used it, it is not perfect like some of the autofocus lens we see from the major makers, but it held its own against the other manual focus lens from the other makers. Just a note a lot of savvy shooter also use this lens or LLL's other lenses.
Just buy a Leica, you won’t regret it 😊
I have a few on the wishlist!
Soft yuk .
It is soft wide open, and challenging to use in different lighting scenarios for sure. That being said it's been a few months now and it hasn't really left my camera. So far its been a nice fit for me!
Looks a lot like my adapted Olympus 50mm 1.8F Zuiko glass. Only difference is the Olympus glass is around $50-$150 depending on what lenses you want. That looks awesome, but its absolutely expensive for results that can be easily mimicked by lenses of yesteryear. 80s Zuiko glass is very sharp on subject with a very impressive bokeh across the whole range which is very very durable and high end. Now the Viltrox 75mm 1.2F, that's worth every penny of $539 when it comes to modern offerings that truly stand apart! I'd recommend you review one!
Funny , i just literally received my pelican card holder and noticed it the cf express didnt fit. I thought the same thing of slicing a piece of the foam to make it fit so i jumped on youtube to see if anyone has done it yet. Great video
Man UA-cam is wild like that right! I’m glad the video was helpful, and an extra note if you cut the foam like in the video, the cards are more secure if you press the label side of the CFe-A cards into the cutout. The side with the electronic contacts doesn’t get as much friction on the foam, compared to the labeled side.
@@Plaughrey do you mean putting the label side down
@@Edgardbmedia yes, so when you open the case you see the electronic contacts.
周库克!!
使用这款镜头很愉快!
They are asking too much money for a knockoff. I’ll rather put on a soft mist filter and save 1k.
I totally get it, it isn't a perfect lens and is not a great fit for everyone. That being said a soft mist filter will never recreate the optical characteristics (both good and bad) What matters most is creating and capturing moments the feels best to YOU! I will always recommend save your money for experiences and document those with what you have. At the end of the day a lens is just a tool; it's the world around you, and your experiences within it that will always be more valuable. 🙌
I just received mine today after a little bit of delay. Can't wait to go out and shoot with it.
7artisans 35mm f1.2 mark ii new 170USD. Vintage rendering with double gauss, planar build. Better than all my vintage lenses from Leica, Pentax, Konica and Olympus
I've been really impressed with 7artisans, I'll have to check out that 35mm sometime soon!
Been eyeing this lens for video work for a long time. How often do you expect to go to this lens vs others in the similar 50mm range?
Hope you are will Michael! So far the lens has still stayed on my camera daily. I like the weight and balance on my sony. The lens can be difficult to work with especially wide open, but I do find I really enjoy the texture the lens imparts to the image. I am constantly adjusting the aperture to avoid over blooming the image, or adjusting how the vignetting is effecting the frame, and all the fine adjustments sometimes leads me to miss moments which can be frustrating. Overall I am very involved with the process of capturing images when using the LLL, and the difficulties turn into creative opportunities to adjust how I am approaching a scene or situation.
I skipped ahead to the test footage, and yes, this does look like the 40k cooke lenses ive rented... it indeed does, same color.
It’s exciting to hear you saw some optical similarities to your rented lenses, thanks for leaving the comment 🙏 I know LLL is working on a PL mount model, so it will be very interesting to see how they approach the construction of the lens casing. There was even talk about moving away from helicoidal focusing mechanism to minimize focus breathing, but I would be that comes down to manufacturing costs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Plaughrey Ive used miniS4i and Cooke Anamorphic on an 8k Red. Your video looks like it could cut right into these.
Would have appreciated if you had pointed out that this LLL lens actually doesn't look like Cooke. It has vintage character but does it actually replicate that Cooke look? I don't think so. It's just a story/claim that they have made up. Most 'real' vintage lenses will give you better optical quality and character at a cheaper price.
At the end of the video I do admit that I've never used an authentic Cooke, so my opinion does not hold a whole lot of weight in this matter 😂 That being said, I did have a few conversations with David Chen from the North American devision of LLL, and we talked at length about how they approached the optical design. They have an original 1940s Cooke Speed Panchro II in their lab, and went through a pain staking process to get as close of match as possible to the optical design and coatings to the original.
@@Plaughrey All that sounds great but how do I know they succeeded in doing what they set out to do? Why don't they have someone shoot with the original Cooke and this lens side by side and show the results? Without that it sounds like a marketing gimmick to extract $$$ from vintage lens lovers.
Is that the case. I will be interested if you can get me a Leica Elcan below $200. Have you shoot with both to come up with the above rant about this video.
@@motopixelz How do you know if they are not succeeded in doing what they set out to do? Guessing ? how do you know if they did not have someone shooting with the original and the one they created? Did you shoot with both? Without that it sounds more like you having an unreasonable bashing on a product you did not even try.
Reminds me a lot of my Takumar 50/1.4(8e), nice to be able to buy something NEW like this rather than risk the used market quality. Good on LLL for doing this.
Takumar 50/1.4, 8 elements or not, has very noticeable green outline on bokeh balls, which Light Lens Lab's doesn't.
Hi Patrick. Thanks for the great review. Been playing around with my lens and I noticed something odd. Not sure if it's my copy or if it is normal as they say. If you go above f8 I notice a blue haze in the center of the frame? I reached out to Light Lens and this is what they told me: This is a normal phenomenon with original SPII as the internal reflection has caused the lens to have diffraction under low T-Stops. It is advise to not shoot SPII under F8. It was only very recently that we discovered this phenomenon. Either our production and distribution network was not aware of this phenomenon due to the lens usually being shot under f/8. Do you get this haze on your lens over f8? Thanks Kevin!
indeed it does. its most notable on low contrast scenes, directly in the center of the image plane.
A 3D printed “Leica-like” focuser tab would be nice.
oh totally agreed!
The focus tab is perfect for me
How is the focus breathing on this lens?
Oh shoot, that would have been a great thing to add to the video 🤦♂️ I’ll do some testing tomorrow and come back with some results 🤘
@@Plaughrey I've not found anyone on UA-cam who talked about the focus breathing on this lens. Definitely would appreciate it if you could show it or talk about it. 👍
I bought this for my Zcam F8. The footage will blow you away. I love this lens. I had an old Russian Oct 19 which was a knock off of Cooke lens/ But this is a recreation. Very true to the original except this one can do full frame not just super35. Buy it you will not regret it.
Thanks for sharing! I totally agree!
70 mm minimum focus is NOT typical for 50 mm, maybe for really old vintage lenses. Even 40 year old good vintage lenses can get closer. Thanks for sharing, though!
Ahh I misspoke, I meant that it’s typical for rangefinder lenses 🤦♂️ I must have missed this on editing 😂
Typical for M lenses, and this is M mount one as well.
True, and upon watching it the second time you actually mention it being typical for rangefinder cameras. Although good lens makers like Voigttländer offer 50 mm minimum focus distance.
@@apocryphal_man most, if not all M mount lenses are .7 meter minimum focus distance for M systems. Not a knock on the maker at all - fact of how the rangefinder mechanism works. So, even if you have an M lens that an focus at .5m, it won't be done via the rangefinder, only the EVF.
For rangefinder it is
Reminds me a lot of my Meyer Optik Gorlitz 58mm f/1.8 Primoplan (Gen II version). Nice video.

Nice sequencing and vibes!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video Matthew!
Those are some beautiful images, I love the bokeh and blooming. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the kind comments Bryan, glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Hey nice work, looking forward to more videos. How bad is the vignetting on 50mm wit this adapter?
Thanks Philip! I would say the vignetting is on the edge of usable on a full frame at 50mm. The corners get fairly dark, but I like the esthetic. If you are on a mirror less camera, I highly recommend turning off IBIS because it moves the vignetting around, and I find that disorienting. I highly recommend the moment adapter paired with the Helios 44-2, which is a 58mm lens. There is no vignetting at that focal length
Oh no
The opening frame is beautiful, Patrick!
Thank you for your kind words!
Well, I can clearly see you are experiencing the same problem like myself with the adapter: vignetting at the focal length Moment recommends using with the adapter aka false advertising. Ive also tried with a 50mm on my Sony A7SIII and I see the same vignetting. Ive also tried their recommended other setup which is a 35mm lens on a S35 sensor of a Red Komodo. The same issue occurs. I'm pretty bummed about Moment basically lying to their customers.
It would have been nice had they shown what 50mm actually looked like on a full frame sensor without a digital zoom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All of their test footage must have had a digital zoom applied, or the pre-production model had wider coverage than the production model. Overall I am enjoying the adapter, and have been really pleased with how it works with my existing lenses (especially these zeiss classics)
Really nice! the movements are very fluid and smooth how did you managed that? tripod with fluid head? the bokeh is noticeable to be anamorphic pretty cool
I was using an ifootage monopod, with a manfrotto fluid head. Most of the time I was just on the mini-tripod feet of the monopod, to get those close to the floor shots. The closeup of the box jump really shows off that anamorphic bokeh!
Also, have you tested with other lenses? Helios 44 ? What are your thoughts overall about the adapter?
I need to publish a short with the Helios, but I can say it works great! Since it’s 55mm there is less vignetting than my 50mm makro planar! My only only warning would be to get a lens support with 15mm rods. The adapter is HEAVY, and my possibly breaks cheap lens adapters (m42 screw style adapters that is) or even the lens mount of the camera if not handled with care! I really love how the moment adapter transforms the texture of my lenses. The weight and technical challenge of focusing an anamorphic lens can be frustrating, but the experience as a whole is magical!
@@Plaughrey great to know Patrick! Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I´m thinking of using it on a rs3 + follow focus, might be around 3kg including the gimbal I imagine but I just love the look of it so much, $1.200 is quite some money but it seems to be a legit good anamorphic single focus solution with sharpness right?
@@TheGuigotz I’ll see if I can’t put together another video with this lens setup on my RS2 with the A1. It would be interesting to setup the DJI follow focus and test things out that way! I am pleased with the image and sharpness when everything is aligned for sure 👍

Forza 300 and 500 are those good lights but pretty much no use for them. They are too noisy for indoors recordings if not soundless (maybe music video or some commercial shots). Not powerful enough neither weatherproof for outdoor shooting. Please be skeptical towards some reviews where the use them as if they were HMI 5kW units for sun imitation froim outsinde through the windows.
There is a price to performance comparison here. The primary competitor to the Forza 300 was the Aperture 300d Mark I. In that regard the Forza beat it out on luminance output, and was roughly on par for noise performance at a more affordable price point. Nanlite has sense released the Nanlux line with weather sealed construction, and light output that out perform 1.5k HMI lights, but at a much greater cost. I have been using these Nanlite Forza 300 lights for over 3 years now, and they are still running reliably for interviews (the fan noise has never given me issues, though my key generally has the fan off), product shoots, and even outdoors for some fill light during sunset shoots.
@@Plaughrey Watched all that UA-cam videos about Forza 300/500 enthusiastic about them and purchased 2 x Forza 300 + Forza 500. Put then into quiet room 5x6 m, 3 m high and find those Forzas useless for any recordings with sound. Tried NTG2 shotgun at 30 cm distance, tried Rode lavalier on the tie, tried to turn the fixture fans off. The sound is useless because PSUs make enough noise in the room to ruin the recording. Would you please tell a little bit about you sound config for the shots with Forza?
