i'd like to add this to my Ipod, but this version is not on Itunes. Has anyone found it to download? Thanks. RIP Dear Mary. I remember listening 50 years ago!
Her and Kate Wolf have voices like angels!!!! Loved them!!!!
In the days before auto-tuners, there were many imperfect vocalists like Mary, often less than perfect but for every strange note there were 3 or 4 gorgeous gems that touch your heart. It is the bumps in the road that make the journey a challenge and forces one to pay attention. There are a hald dozen songs from Mary that I can listen to in the twilight with a glass of wine and transcend the moment, waiting (waiting waiting, another gem) for those splendid harmonies on Let It Be Me, and the wistful dreams of Young Westley - take me away Mary, you will always be alive for me.
I love and miss you so much Mary. Rest in peace sweet angel.
I met Jim Ringer in 1975 at the Festival for American Folklife in DC. I was volunteering there. I was 14. I had a Jim Ringer album that I enjoyed listening to and was surprised and pleased to meet him. He was as surprised as me that I'd know him and was very modest and kind. Totally cool!
Thank you for sharing this wonderfully written version of Tramps And Hawkers by Jim Ringer (1977). This "Rose Of The San Joaquin" version of Tramps And Hawkers, by Jim Ringer, was my introduction to this melody, although I probably had unconsciously taken in a few of the other versions by Bob Dylan, Ewan MacColl ... etc. I have a great memory of Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin performing it back in 1980 at the "Sounding Board" coffeehose in CT/USA. That "listening room" space was perfect for focusing on well crafted lyrics like this. Jim Ringer does such a terrific job of setting up a story that is absolutely "American Old West" in every way, but I am just realizing today how amazingly far back the melody and hard scrambling lyrical storyline have been present in the folk tradition ..... primarily through Irish and Scottish singers. Unbelievable insight can be gained by checking out this link I just found on an old "Mudcat.org" thread. The blog linked to below covers the origin of this song from 1870 to the present. Such a valuable, well researched source! After hours of deep "rabbit holing" into song after song using this melody and storyline, Jim Ringer's version is still my favorite. His words draw me in to imagining the hard reality of life on the road, wherever it has been experienced through history. jopiepopie.blogspot.com/2014/08/come-all-ye-tramps-and-hawkers-1890s.html
I miss you so much ❤
This song and both of you warm my soul
This is a lovely rendition of this song!
What is going on? This girl should not be forgotten.
The most under rated artist of our time. Watch her interpretation of blackbird singing in the dark of night. Paul, recognize this girl. Please
I really like this version. It's on the soundtrack of the 1981 movie "Cattle Annie and Little Britches."
I've been singing this song for over 40 years, and it always goes over fine! Especially when somebody sings along with that harmony part!
SHE écrit un meurtre va Bien??????
ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BY A BRILLIANT ARTIST !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, what tuning is this in please?
I can't figure out why this song hasn't been recorded a hundred times. Beautiful rendition!
Dolce melodia! bellissima voce!
Her voice was always so remarkable. Her imagery wonderful. Re-discovered after miss placing all my LPs some years and a lifetime ago.
Love Mary!!! :-)
I rode the California Zephyr train from southern Iowa all the way to California as a youngster in the 1960s. Love trains!!! :-)
This is a lovely song, heard it for the first time today. Great piano and really compelling melody.
Great performance. Amazing guitar.
Love this, They had such a great sound.
This is incredible, wish it was available on cd, I don't think it is.
The old California . . . duende, wistful longing . . . "you can almost hear the earth beneath you weeping"
Saw these two in 1983(?) at Cafe Extemporé on the West Bank, Mpls Mn (Across from the 400 Bar.) Wouldn’t go back but those days are burned in my memory. God help us!
Paid extra $ to ride in the cab. It was out of service and I was not reimbursed. None the less, me and my mom had a good time.
This is the first version of Amanda I ever heard, and it's still my favorite.
Loved the movie , I was in grade 11 when it came out and always loved the theme song ...... she had a little bit of Joplin in her when she sang ..... she was three years younger then Joplin
Gone too soon.
Only Mary McCaslin can endow with 3/4 "waltz" meter with such nobility.

You came into this world a day after me and left it way to early.
WAY OUT WEST (Mary McCaslin) My family left home when I was a child To head out West, all open and wild I couldn't wait to ride the prairie on a pony But we passed over the plains and on down Into the great stucco suburban forest The people there all held my dreams in jest Somehow I grew to spite them Way out West My first love came West to play and to sing But soon he left the hearts-and-flowers scene He started to hang around the ranch And then he joined with the Wild West Show He became one of the bunch He gave them all, all his very best He's riding high somewhere Way out West Then I fell in with a rounder who's always on the move But he wanted to make, instead of give, love He wouldn't hear of love as a gift, instead He used his cruelties and his remedies To come down heavy on my head He'll only stay where he can be a guest He lives one day at a time Way out West My family left home when I was a child To head out West, all open and wild I still can't wait to ride the prairie on a pony I'm gonna head back out to the rolling plains And leave behind the great stucco forest I'll be using all these stormy nights for rest For my daybreak journey Way out West Way out West Way out West
Great familiar story....beautiful voice
Can’t wait to visit someday!
Still Beautiful after all of these years. Miss you..........
I love your music. You are one of my favourites!
Never tire of this melody, & lyric: sets me 'free'...😊🥹🪷🙏
What a gem!
Have any idea what tuning she was playing in?
Did I see photos of a younger Faith Petric in some of the frames?
The best part of my life, come to lfe with Mary singing the blues away, and bringing all the sunlight shining down. Thanks for posting!
