1980년 5월 18일, 전라도 광주에서 일어난 민주화 항쟁은 12.12 군사 반란으로 집권한 신군부의 독재와 및 계엄령 등에 대한 영향을 받아 광주 시민들이 강력하게 항의 운동을 벌이자 당시 전두환 군부 정권이 군을 동원해 무력으로 무참히 탄압되었다.
