The wheel’s design was inspired by a Celtic double-headed axe, and it is composed of 1,200 tonnes of steel. Its two gondolas, or caissons, are balanced on either side of the wheel and are filled with water. According to Archimedes' principle, the weight of the water in each gondola is equal to the weight of the boat it carries, ensuring the system remains perfectly balanced at all times. This balancing act enables the wheel to rotate using surprisingly little energy - the equivalent of boiling just eight kettles of water, or about 1.5 kWh of electricity, to lift a boat 79 feet (24 meters).
Operation and Functionality
The Falkirk Wheel operates on a simple yet ingenious principle of equilibrium and gravity. Boats enter one of the two gondolas, each capable of carrying up to 600 tonnes, from one canal. When filled, the gondolas weigh the same whether they carry a boat or just water due to the displacement effect. When the wheel rotates, the counterbalancing forces ensure that the energy required is minimal. The entire rotation process takes about five minutes, allowing boats to efficiently and smoothly transition between the two levels of the canal.
Additionally, the wheel's impressive size - standing 35 meters tall - allows it to overcome the significant height difference between the two canals in a single step. The engineering is further supported by an aqueduct, a tunnel, and a basin, which guide the boats seamlessly on their journey. The aqueduct, named the Roughcastle Aqueduct, leads boats to the wheel, while the Roughcastle Tunnel passes beneath the Roman Antonine Wall, linking directly to the Union Canal.
