BMW 6 Speed (420g) Transmission Swap into E36 M3 - 5 Speed previously installed.
The 5 Speed clutch broke on my 1995 M3 so I decided to swap in a 6 Speed I had laying around. The 6 speed transmission started life as an BMW E46 SMG transmission, I had the bellhousing machined and converted to a true manual housing. Question, when you did the swap i noticed the shift carrier was much longer on the 6 speed. Will the shift knob still fit in the original e36 shifter hole or is modification required?
It’s actually the other way around. The 6 speed is longer so that means the shifter carrier is shorter. It aligns perfectly.

Yes, it’s a direct bolt-on for your car.

Hey - The 5-speed ZF and 6-speed 420G transmissions differ mainly in gear count and design. The 5-speed ZF has almost a direct drive in 5th gear, which limits top speed as the engine reaches max RPM. The 6-speed 420G has an overdrive 6th gear, allowing for a higher top speed if the engine has enough power.

no, you need a driveshaft, clutch and fly wheel but the trans will bolt right up if its from an e46
Can the bmw E90 6 speed gearbox fit on the m50 motor
the bellhousing is different, you need one from an e46

Hey - that's personal choice. I'm also not sure what will bolt up to your m43b18. I'm mostly familiar with my motor. Sorry I couldn't help.
stick with the 5 speed 1.8L don't have the torque to make use of the 6th gear.

good stuff man! I'm stilling a s54 on a 36 m3 dakar yellow and the 6speed trans sits 6 inchs back further with that being said i cant`t find a trans support mount that fits! what support did you use my man? would help me a lot.

How short did you get the driveshaft cut? And do you have it get it cut?
Hey, I had the front half of my 5Speed driveshaft cut to 20 3/4 inches if I remember correctly. I'll double check it this week for you. I measured from the stud that mounts the center support, to the guibo.

Beside modifying the bell housing, I understand that I’d need to modify the SMG gear box for the Gear Identification Switch. What parts will go into the new tapped hole? if you could, please provide the list of parts that I need, part numbers ?
From what I understand, you can wire the stock switch to a display in your car to show what gear you’re in. I didn’t do that mod for this swap, maybe I’ll try it in the future. I just left the stock switch in place as a plug for that hole.
@@KeepingItStock does your reverse light work? Where you able to plug it in for your e36 appplication?
@@europeantechnique572 I had to wire in the reverse lights, the previous owner did the 5 speed swap (car was auto before) and never hooked up them up.

Question for you.... Did you use the same flywheel from the e36 m3? i heard the are the same... Is this true.. which clutch and flywheel did you go with?
I used an E46 M3 DKM clutch kit and came with a flywheel. I believe you need to use the E46 clutch and flywheel when doing this swap.
Great job man! I hope I can do that with mine in the future! I currently run a 3.68 LSD diff from a z3 that came with a 6 speed, and now i need a 6 speed trans to match the ratio, but they are super hard to find! Can you make a video about your car, maybe a walkaround video about your e36. I think i´m not the only one who would like to see it :D
Check car-part.com for SMGs, you might find a cheap one on there. I’ll try to do a walk around in the summer.

Keep you eyes out there for SMG transmissions, they are getting harder to find at a decent price, but there are still good deals out there.
