Monitoring your mite load is an essential part of beekeeping. The alcohol wash is the gold standard for determining your mite load. This video demonstrates how to do an alcohol wash for the varroa destructor.

Переглядів 14 тис.4 роки тому
This is a quick and easy way to remove the foam off the top of honey. Some folks waste time and precious honey skimming the white foam with a spoon. Check out this video for a practical honey hack that you're sure to love.
Small Hive Beetle
Переглядів 1644 роки тому
This video demonstrates a trick to remove small hive beetles from comb cells and shows what small hive beetles look like as they scamper across the lid of a hive. Small hive beetles are pests that are a big problem for beekeepers in various parts of the country. Luckily for many northerners, small hive beetle encounters are generally sparse (so far).

What's the Best Trap for the Asian Giant Hornet (Murder Hornet)? Part 1
Переглядів 3,6 тис.4 роки тому
We are testing four different baits to capture the Asian Giant Hornet (aka Murder Hornet). Since we live in the area of Washington where they have established colonies, we are hopeful that we will have success capturing Asian Giant Hornets. Trap #1: 1/2 cup of Grape Juice 1/2 cup of Calpis (Calpico) 1/2 cup of Rice Wine Trap #2 1 can of Cat Food Trap #3 1/2 cup of Orange Juice 1/2 cup of Rice W...
Swarm Trap Tips
Переглядів 2 тис.4 роки тому
This is a swarm trap we've had a lot of success with and we'd like to share some helpful tips.
Hey thanks for posting! It exactly answered my first question. My second question is related to the re-use of older plastic foundation. I’ve got frames that were used by the bees but the comb structure is damaged and some is filled with pollen how do I handle that issue. Can I clean the frames and re-wax them?
amazing video, great job
Just out of curiosity, what do nucs sell for in your area? I'm from England and I sell mine in Correx boxes for £150 to bee club members £175 to others which is about $195 and $227 Buying them from a commercial bee yard they are around £200 here and another £45 in a wooden box
Great tip! It is interesting that the foam is actually hydrogen peroxide. Thank you!
This is probably the best swarm trap vid on UA-cam
I wax the fundations directly with cold wax not melted...just like if it was surf board wax....
Very helpful, thanks for posting
Great video!
Are you concerned about contaminating your hive with bouten wax
Great video, I use the same foam roller.
I didn't find part2
What benefits/nutrition does the foam have? Cheers!
Great video but any follow-up on how effective (or not) these traps were? These Chinese hornets decimate butterflies by the dozen. One of these can kill a dozen butterflies in less than a day.
That's great! Thank you! I'm going to try that.
I use a crock pot bag liner on my crock pot before I melt it. And when I’m done waxing frames, I just lift the bag out of the crock pot, it hardens in the bag. Then when I need it again, just put the bag back into the crock pot and reheat it. 👍
Great tip, thanks!🐝
I like the sugar water tip.
❤❤❤
Nice video
I checked for mites yesterday and used the tote method that you demonstrate and it worked like a charm! Thanks for the tip.
I am sure that you mean well but that is one of the worst , fumbling, badly done videos I have waisted my time watching .
Will build one tonight TY
Thanks. I'm getting ready to do this soon. 🐝🐝💕
How were you sure you didn't get the queen in the alcohol wash?
Thanks for sharing!
very nice thank you
Never made a video 2??
I don't even think you have to change the bait After every 3 days. even if the Bait rotts and spoils the buggs will still get in it I mean rotting fruit doesn't necissarily make them sick or make them have a dislike and distaste for it. idk what nonsense that is. Seeing as it takes awhile for asian hornets to come around, i live on an island not in any big Country, we have them here and i can honestly tell you it is almost idioticly hard to catch these things. and i meeean hard... i barely seev them come around It'd be wise to leave the trap out for more than 2 weeks As they usually travel around sometimes greater distances. also as if the nest isn't nearby It'll probably take them Longer to notice The bait, idk exactly how well they're sense of smell is.
It’s been 2 yrs, where’s part 2?
Failed?
rice wine Alone is hard to find pretty much no store has it.
Love it
Great video
as a new beekeper, I'm worried about giving the queen an alcohol wash!!
Make sure you’re not taking the Queen!
here we use cheap beer
Do you need to freeze the wax before you melt it?
Wax is already "frozen". Think about it 🤔
Randy Oliver made checked out what was the more efficient in dislodging mites on bees and he determined that it was Down dish soap. It was better than the 90% alcohol. This was a very good explanation for the new beekeeper in explaining how to do the mite check. Thank you.
Thanks for Sharing this with us Sir
Glad you enjoyed it!
love your videos. Keep up your good work. Your the only beekeeper in WA state on UA-cam. Thank you for your advice.
Glad you enjoy it! Hopefully someday I'll find more time to upload more.
What success did you have?
Now I’m trying to figure out how to attract bees to my bee keeping box
Are you trying to catch a swarm?
@@mcfallbeeyard2348 Yes I am
Free bees are awesome!
@@mcfallbeeyard2348 I hope I attracted some this year to my bee box
Hydrogen peroxide?
😅😅
It's bizarre how honey can release hydrogen peroxide. Amazing stuff!
Good tutorial. Thanks!
Your welcome! Definitely useful to speed up colony growth.
We scoop it off and sell it as limited time . Raw honey foam !
Great idea!
Thanks for the demo! Next time you should try the BeeScaning app and find the mites with your camera and AI! Works great!
What if instead of bees come in wasps or hornets?
Great point.. Bees tend to not be interested in moving in if there's a wasp (or hornet) nest inside a swarm trap. So I scrape out the wasp nest when I find it.
Great design, I will put one together soon, thanks.
Did you put a bee-vac together yet? How did it turn out?
Which trap worked the best?
I'll post an update soon (I hope-ha!) But the grape/calpis captured the most native hornets and wasps.
Are you kin to Terry McFall?
Yes! Are you a Texan?
So helpful, beginner beekeeper thanks
where do you live I live in Washington state were there giant Hornet encounters
Hello David! We're in Custer, WA...ground zero. Where in Washington are you?
@@mcfallbeeyard2348 Oh nice I live in Ridgefield, I was also wondering did you catch any feral or wild HoneyBee colonies here in Washington?
Yes! We love catching swarms and doing the occasional cutout. 😁
people seem to sensitive to everything these days
Agreed!
