Thanks for the compliments, on Valinka's behalf. It shows how varied an interpretation can be made of Bobby Hebb's original, of which Boney M - whose 'Belfast' Valinka covered - made a Disco-flavoured version.

My nan had this same one, same design, same dials etc but hers also had a turn table on the right and record storage on the left, both under a solid wood lid. Oh and it was on legs.

Thanks for the feedback and that additional information on how you nan's set-up was arranged. I wonder if I may attempt a connection between the Ferguson FTURN01 turntable I have and this radio as an amplifier, if one can adapt RCA plugs to fit in the connections at the rear of the set, or maybe strip them off and just go the bare-wire route. For a while I had it hooked up to the rear of the early Nineties vintage Toshiba hi-fi, the turntable of which you can see in action elsewhere in this Tenth Anniversary celebration, using the hi-fi as an amplifier, but then the 'Aux' mode went 'AWOL' on one of the channels around the turn of the year and the screws on the cabinet are too rusted-up to get inside to effect some sort of repair job on any bad connections there may be, if that is, indeed, possible. In the somewhat earlier days of my UA-cam membership I had a complaint from one commenting that that built-in turntable was running too fast, so I've been very reluctant to feature it on UA-cam ever since. It was only because my Steepletone ST918 record player, that is my other choice, was acting up on the evening of the 1st April that I used that built-in turntable as the only viable option. As it happens, I seem to have sorted out the stray pick-up arm on the Steepletone earlier today, which is good news. Either way, the main thing is to keep my 'famous' 9"/23cm-diameter Celestion speaker from childhood active...or maybe even more excitingly, to see (hear) what the Pye VHF3D is like as an amplifier. Did your nan ever play any records through it while you were around and, if so, what was it like in your experience?

I agree totally. I think that late Fifties/early Sixties period was a Golden Age of radios - not only English ones, but (West) German ones like Grundig, certainly on V.H.F. - or F.M., as it's called nowadays - They look and sound awesome with those 'magic eye' tuning indicators and big, old speakers. I remember there used to be a Grundig valve radio in Mum's and Dad's bedroom and its 'magic eye' was something to behold. I had a rather older one in my bedroom on which I'd listen to Radio 1 when it was on Medium Wave in the late Seventies, using my iron bedstead as the Short Wave aerial! I've now been reminded that I identified it as a His Master's Voice Model 1124 - getting towards a decade older than the Pye VHF3D - about four years ago. I used to have a few cassette recordings taken from that radio of the Sunday evening Top Forty count-down. Here is a video of that make and model of radio in action, with a comment about which I'd totally forgotten from 'Yours Truly'! ua-cam.com/video/jB3c2vCsvnY/v-deo.html

Yes, thanks. The video was shot on Monday evening. I have had it some decades, as I bought it from a second-hand shop in Belper that has long gone. (I would say it was sometime in the early Eighties). Indeed, second-hand shops as we once knew them are all no more, their place having been taken by charity shops or things like ebay. There was another one on Normanton Road in Derby I used to love dropping in, mostly just to look at retro stuff and that's gone the way.

Thanks. Did you like the Dunfermline Athletic/Norwich City tie, that I think must have been a school tie, bought from a charity shop in Swadlincote? Now I come to think of it, the time when I'd have first played those records would have coincided with my 'adoption' of the 'Pars' (DAFC), about a decade before that of the 'Canaries'.

Thanks for the compliments, Stuart! Donika has quite a voice, doesn't she, like quite a few Bulgarians I have uncovered. From my reading of the credits this will have been an entirely natively composed song, too. Unlike some of the other English translations of the original title on this album this is a case of an exact match. I also have an interest in ornithology, especially other languages' names for birds. Elsewhere on UA-cam I made a comment on a video comparing Czech and Slovak in reply to somebody who had remarked that Slovak is a mere dialect of Czech, violently disagreeing with that viewpoint and it would appear that my little bit of research just now has backed me up on that reply. The Slovak for 'swallow' is 'lastovička obyčajná' - the 'obyčajná' bit meaning 'common or garden' - while the Czech is 'vlaštovka obecná' - the 'obecná' bit meaning 'common or garden'. A transliteration of the Bulgarian title of this song from Cyrillic into Latin script would be 'byalata lyastovitsa' - the 'byalata' bit meaning 'white'. 'Lastovička' looks much closer to 'lyastovitsa' than it does to 'vlaštovka'.

Thanks for taking the trouble to comment on my 'experiment' at 'Vlogging', which I may take up again sometime at my UA-cam channel. It was a very different world back in the summer of 2018 when I shot that video, the most personally different thing being that I was living at another address and was only just over three months later to move house from the place where I'd lived, on and off, for the approximately fifty-seven years of my life, as things then stood. You will have seen a reference to my late father's love of the De Havilland Mosquito at your 'The Mosquito At The Movies' video. He had passed away the previous October and that was his little corner of the living room where I was sitting. Interestingly, you chose a video that happened to touch upon the theme of WWII aviation, via the author of 'Le Petit Prince', Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which was reflected in the 'Night Flight' post at 'Bananas For Breakfast', from August 2019, linked off from a recent post there. I have since obtained a copy of 'V poschodí pátém'/'Malý princ' on vinyl, but sadly 'V poschodí pátém' has developed a fault, so I'll probably have to get hold of a replacement to do a UA-cam uploading in July of next year to celebrate the 'Golden Anniversary' of these incredible tunes, respectively from the 'A-Team' (as I know them!) of Vítězslav Hádl and Ladislav Pikart and the then eighteen-year-old 'Wonder Kid' Zdeněk Němeček, delivered by the peerless Valérie Čižmárová, rapidly approaching her prime, having turned twenty-one earlier that year....not forgetting Skupina Svatopluka Čecha (The Svatopluk Čech Group) and Jezinky!

Thanks for the comments, @Kiaorafranz! I'm afraid to say that I'm still largely dependent on written-down lyrics for the songs of Valérie Čižmárová and various other of the 'Girls Of The Golden East', but I do at least manage to catch the general gist of those lyrics where lyrics aren't available on-line and I'm reasonably confident to tell you that there does appear to be a pattern, certainly with Valérie Čižmárová's recordings of cover versions, where there is rather more 'bite' in the lyrics than in the originals. I think this is the case with 'Oči nelžou' vis-à-vis 'When Jo Jo Runs', where in the original it's all about singing the praises of a really hot 'chick' but where, in the Valérie Čižmárová cover, it appears to be about the singer knowing what's really going on judging by the looks in her lover's eyes and for him to 'watch out'. I may be wrong, but time will tell if I eventually do get to find Vladimír Poštulka's lyrics for this song and I'd be amazed if I do turn out to be mistaken!
