Just an amateur rock tumbler, crafter, and diyer trying to share my wins and fails. I post weekly updates on my tumblers and other videos that I think might be interesting.
What's in my tumbler? || Episode 92
Two batches are finished this week! I'm finally done with all my obsidian, flower agate, and pidgeon blood jasper. I forgot to record the new barrels, the first is the petrified wood and texas seam agate from the Fossick subscription box, I'm calling is Fossick 2. The other barrel is african striped agate and mixed agates all from Meeko's Mine. I'm calling that one Mixed Stripes.

I like the ideas of other rock tumbling related topics. I was wondering when we may see the ink.
It's on my to do list. I just need a couple hours to get the filming done.
Wow I’m the first comment!!!!
👍
Feel better soon Liz!
Thanks! I'm feeling much better already.
Puppers wants attention 😊
Always!
Have you tried corn cob, dry polish?
I did with some flourite. It looked terrible before and worse after. I'm not 100% sure I did it right, but I did look up some videos and posts about how to use it and followed them.
Hi new sub from Oz down under. I’m a rock lover too😀
Welcome! Glad you have you!
@ thanks Liz, I just finished dusting my huge petrified rock🤣🤣
Interesting
Thanks!
Nice to see. New sub here. I do rocks too. I use plastic strainer instead of wire mesh strainer so the wire mesh doesn’t scratch the final finish on the rocks. 🪨
That's interesting. I haven't had that issue at all. It's something I'll have to think about.
Maybe able to "fix" Tiger Eye by going back to stage 2 grit??
Possibly. I don't think it's needs to go all the way back to 1, but a couple days in 1 wouldn't hurt either. I'm still thinking about what I want to do with it.
I also use a national geographic tumbler and you probably broke a "brush" they were awesome about replacing it lol but next time i think I'll invest in a brushless motor
I still have the one they replaced it with, but I don't use it. I've moved on to Lortone tumblers. I'm not sure where I'll go when they die, but I hear that Highland Park tumblers are really good.
@LizRocksAndStuff I'm horrible at oiling and maintaining so I just bought a Amp thing to slow down my tumbler but maybe one day I'll have more maintaining abilities lol
@ I am also terrible about maintenance. One of my tumblers didn't want to start after a week off because it hadn't been oiled recently. It's working now, but I just had to oil it more because it was squeaking horribly.
How long did you soak your vinegar & steel wool mixture?
If I recall, it was 24 hours, might have been a couple days.
@@LizRocksAndStuff Thanks! what is the difference between the middle and the far right? I want a light weathered look, not the black.
@@garrettp.5018 The far right is what it looks like after a few minutes. I'm not sure if you can stop the reaction once it starts. If I recall, the longer you soak the vinegar and steel wool, the darker the final finish would be. If you just want a weathered look, maybe try soaking it for less time. I'd definitely do some testing to see if you can get the color you want.
Uuuuuugh your obsidian turns out SO SHINY! I do all the same things as you but mine are just kinda ok
I don't know why that would be. I can't think of anything that would make a difference.
@LizRocksAndStuff me neither. I ended up doing 2 weeks in 8k polish... it helped, but yours look so much better 😅
The only think I can think would be the obsidian itself, where did you get yours?
Aeon Flux the adult "anime" not the movie has always been my favorite and i think Aeon is a cool name. I have an aussie/akita/american eskimo mix that is super high energy, and yours being boxer aussie is gonna be big energy, and Aeon Flux had very high energy and could jump like both breeds of your new fur baby do. Whatever you choose she is absolutely adorable!
That is very true! I like that name too.
Gemma…
Nice!
Dog name: Ishi (that is stone in Japanese, can play into your Anime theme and rock tumbling hobby)
I like that!
Congrats on 500+ subscribers! Yes, the Pigeon Blood is actually more calcedony than jasper. It is also sold as Pigeon Blood Agate, however, I have not seen it with bands, so not sure agate would be technically correct either.
That's good to know. I wish I knew more about rocks, I'm learning that a lot of the time what is called isn't what it is.
Way to go on 500! 🎉 Cant wait to see the obsidian! I have a bunch of got for Christmas, I have a barrel opening on Saturday 😊
Me too! I love obsidian.
@LizRocksAndStuff 🥰
Congratulations on reaching 500 and I'm looking forward to the petrified wood
Thank you! Me too. I've tumbled some before, but this is much better quality than what I had. I think it will be amazing.
Have you thought about entering this year's world rock tumbling contest?
I have thought about it every year since I found out. I forgot about it this year.
@LizRocksAndStuff I haven't been tumbling long but lol it's jasper from Oregon and l love jasper so I sent in the application for fun
That's fun! I'll have to see if it too late to apply.
Happy new year my friend! Hope you and your family have a great 2025!
Happy New Year to you and your family as well!
forbidden hot chocolate slurry
It is a tasty looking slurry.
Susann here….lol!!!! And yes I was crocheting at that point.
🤣🤣🤣
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
I have had a washer and nut come off because it wasn't tight enough and the vibration of the tumbler made it come off sometime durring the week and I discovered them jn about the same spot yours were, either than or gremlins took it off jn the middle of the night.....lmfao P.S. I absolutely loved the R2D2 notification that went off while you were doing the obsidian section, made my nerd smile!
I'm assuming that's what happened here. I thought the whole lid would have come off too! And thanks. It's about a 50/50 chance on whether someone recognizes it or thinks it's a bird.
@LizRocksAndStuff i was momentarily confused because my notification is the same one until I realized #1 my phone was on silent and #2 I was watching a video 😂🤣
I have totally done that too! 😂😂
Love this reveal. I want to tumble this sometime
It's really fun stuff to tumble!
Resident ghost or a loved one in spirit moving your things 😊
Spooky! I'll have to look out for other weird things happening.
Merry Christmas! Hope you and your family have the best holidays!
Thank you! And Merry Christmas to your family as well. I hope you have a great holiday.
@LizRocksAndStuff thank you Liz ❤️
Fabulous episode!
Thank you!
Did you say, "Hawk's Eye"? That is actually another name used for Blue Tiger Eye.
Is it? I thought it was a totally different rock! Guess I don't need to find it then.
That Opal is definitely not real. A pretty good set of rocks for the price though. The Ruby Zoisite even had some ruby showing!
The opal feels very plastic. There are a couple rocks that are suspiciously the exact same size and shape and feel like resin to me. I'm not upset though, I got what I paid for.
Purple people eaters lol Skol!!! Love the rock towel
Lol, I had to look up what Skol meant! I'm not a sports person.
I think you got the Mookaite correct, the mystery rock could be fancy jasper.
That's probably right. It does look a lot like jasper.
I'm not surprised to see the apatite was in the rough, early on in my tumbling experience I tried to tumble some and it was a disaster lol
I've not tumbled it, and I don't know much about it. Maybe I'll try as an experiment.
@LizRocksAndStuff it is super soft, MOHS 5 and needs kid gloves even more so than obsidian. I may try again now that I have a bit more experience, the 1st time was like my 3rd or 4th batch ever, and tears were shed lol
I know that feeling! I tried flourite in one of my first batches and I can't get the courage to try again.
@LizRocksAndStuff that is another I would like to try, when they do turn out they are stunning, I am finding myself being drawn to soft stones and wanting to come up with some ways to get good finishes more often than not, basically a giant science experiment in our geology based hobby 😂🤣
As far as I know, howlite is usually passed off as turquoise by dyeing it blue. I'm almost positive that turquoise is turquoise and howlite is howlite. I've tumbled howlite but not turquoise. It's very soft so it needs started out with stage 2 grit for stage 1. Some people say they can't get a shine but I've not had a huge problem 😊
Good to know! I was pretty sure that they were different. Maybe I'll give it a try, I've got a few tricks for shining softer rocks.
@LizRocksAndStuff totally worth it ...they're really pretty with the black/grey marbling 😊 I like to put them in mason jars with fairy lights. I pepper in other colored rocks ( just did one with rose quartz peppered throughout the edge) so it shows the colors off. Cool little night light...
That sounds really cool! I'll have to try that.
Feral children?? How very dare you??? 😂😅
The obsidian is just gorgeous. What an amazing piece for pondering. I like the rock towel.
I'm so happy with how it turned out. I love it!
Love the rock background, reminds me of your outdoor videos ❤
Me too! I was hoping it would do that.
Number 3 looks like goldstone. It's manmade
I think you're right! That one did not look natural to me, and I'm not surprised that something like that was in there.
They would have made that a lot easier if they put the date with the stone on the back :).
That would make things a lot easier. This is my fourth one and none of them have done that!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, it was very interesting how you .
I'm happy to share!
Your nails are so pretty! I think with your new set up a ring light would do wonders. The fossick rocks turned out so nice!
Thank you! I have a ring light, but the clamp on it broke. I've been meaning to get a new one, because it really did help.
When showing off my moss agate, I use a backlight.
Good idea! I didn't think of that.
@@LizRocksAndStuff The light on my phone works great.
The obsidian does look promising. Looking forward to the next episode. Love the new name and the movie!
Thanks! I'm excited to see how it turns out.
Fortunately ceramic media has a mohs of 7 all by itself ❤ my vote is the obsidian will be shiny ❤
I think it'll be fine. I've had success with obsidian before. My main concern is that it's not as full as I would like.
@LizRocksAndStuff that's fair, that is a big chunk, i worry about those myself lots lol
Another beautiful batch!! Just curious, what do you do with all your finished treasures? I have jars and glass bowls and shelves full of tumbles and statement piece crystals. I always try and get everyone's ideas to display. I was thinking about going down the rabbit hole of wire wrapping since I have so much lol...
I have put my bigger ones in potted plants. I've used smaller ones in resin projects. Mostly they sit on bins never to be looked at again. 🤣🤣 I have picked up the supplies to learn wire wrapping, but haven't had time to learn yet. It looks really cool.
@LizRocksAndStuff lol, I think I'll make time this year to learn. Who knows, it may help pay for my tumbling addiction/hobby ☺️
Love this as always! I love your kitty! Ours is quite orange as well, and is a she which is already an oddity lol. The ASMR is a bit louder than your voiceover in this one, some times a little hard to hear what you are saying. And Happy thanks giving! Have a safe one.
Thank you! I forgot to turn down the background and didn't realize it until it had been up for a while. Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy thanksgiving! What about smoky tiles?
That's a better name!
you're on to something
👍
I recently started collecting and tumbling rocks because of this channel, and it's my new weekend hobbie, so thanks for giving me something i really like to do (:
This is the best comment I've ever gotten! I'm glad I could introduce you to something that you like. I would love to see your results.
Could you do a batch of fluorite? I have some pieces I really like but my first batch (least pretty pieces from the same bag) didn’t go great. I did the final polish in corn cob but it only got somewhat shiny. I want to start rocks I really like but I’m not sure where I went wrong and don’t wast to ruin them. I want to watch someone who knows what they’re doing and I like how you explain what you do and why.
I've done flourite in the past and it did not go well at all, episode 19 was the final reveal for them. After the corn cob they weren't even a little shiny. It's a tricky one that I have heard really should be finished in a vibe tumbler, which I don't have. I've been considering trying again, but I don't have any amount of confidence that it would turn out (though my success with the shungite has given me false hope). If I can find some decent ones maybe I'll give it another go.
Just learned a neat trick with Shungite at a craft show recently. was handed a piece of the rock, and told to try opening apps on my smart phone using the Shungite. Why is this possible? Was not interested in tumbling it till now. Have to give it a try.
My last batch turned out amazing! I've never heard of that before though. I'll have to give it a try. It's mostly made of carbon, I don't know if that would be why it works on smart phones.
