Reflections around how labels can impact our interactions with children
These reflections are relevant to labels used by couples in therapy, and in individual adult counselling.
What’s important is to know how you respond to a label: emotionally, conceptually and explore the social uses and ramifications of these, which might be to dominate or establish a diminishing respect for the other.

Counselling Resource for working with teens and adults using metaphors

This eResource: Metaphors Move Us was born out of a curiosity around how people use metaphors to talk about their lives in a counselling setting. Many people seeking counselling have been worn down by problems for months, years and even decades. Sometimes their life story feels ‘problem saturated’. Thank you! I've got a client who keeps saying, "I don't know," every time I ask about her emotions, and I've been wondering if they truly don't know or not. These questions could be helpful for sifting some of that out.

This “I don’t know” or “nothing” can also be an indication of an attachment trauma response. The shut down after repeated ‘bids for connection’ in childhood were not met. Supervision around this particular case might bear fruit.

Hi Kim, this is Glen. Really great trick. I saw that you kept the top cards on top when you cut the cards, Lol. But, I did not catch the bottom deal. You did that really well. Thanks for teaching this trick. Are you still doing card magic? I was magician when I was between 8 and 16 yrs old. I bought a lot of magic store tricks from the local magic store. Then life changed. My passion was and still is drumming. Ive drummed since 7 yrs old. Almost 57 yrs. About 5 yrs ago, I wasnt drumming as much, and thought about doing magic. I still have my tricks from my childhood. They are in excellent conditions. I had watched a few card tricks on you tube, and thought to start with card tricks. I have cards. It shouldnt cost much money, but I quickly took to this new idea, and bought tons of books on ebay, more decks of cards, because my decks were nasty from all of the practicing that I was doing, and I didnt want to do a card trick for someone and use dirty cards. Then I learned about gimmick cards, and have been buying a bunch of them. Lol. I learned to use my extra dirty cards to cut and use as gimmick cards. I hope you and your family are all doing great 👍. I have a few ideas for your trick, and a few thoughts to change the routine, but still doing the bottom deal. I would love to share my thoughts with you, but I dont want to type a book, and then you dont get this comment, read it, and not reply. I hope to hear from you and if you are still doing card magic and want me to share some thoughts and ideas, let me know. 😊 Thanks again, Kim. Best wishes, Glen

Hi Glen, It’s a winner! So easy too. I only have a few magic tricks of various types ‘up my sleeve’ - as I’m a counsellor and find them helpful for chilling out with my child/adolescent clients when we’re still getting to know one another. Keeping life and work playful in the midst of serious times globally and individually is part of my modus operandi. Have fun!

@kimbillington - Hey Kim, It's great to hear from you. Thanks for your reply. It is really cool that you show your students' card tricks. When I watched your 7 trick, I didn't know you dealt the first card ( 7) from the bottom of the deck .That was great. Without thinking about what i had just watched, I thought, that is a cool trick, but she put the four 7's on top of the deck and dealt them when she dealt the number of each card that was turned over. I should have known better that the trick wouldn't work like that. Lol. You really got me good. Lol. I want to start getting gigs to perform my magic tricks and card tricks. Im also looking for a new band. I dont know if i can do both or not. It depends on scheduling and other things that I have going on. I learned a few card tricks that have the number 7 in the tiltles and use 7 cards. I learned one 7 trick as a kid, and we had to make the number 7, but use only 7 cards. I forget them. However, I have a 7 trick in my list of card tricks that I do, but i hadn't done this one in a while, and it is much different than your trick. I do card tricks when I go to my food store, my pharmacy, my banks, and anywhere else i think of doing them. Lol. I will give you a few ideas of mine from tricks that I learned and do. Kids might not catch the 3 piles being cut and picked up the same way that you did in your video, but you want to fool everyone, lol. There are false cuts you could do in your hand or on the table, but what do you think of this? - Put, the bottom pile down first like you did, then put the middle pile to one side of it, and the top pile to the opposite side, and you can pick the piles up from right to left or left to right, making sure your top pile is still on top. - If you put the middle pile to the left of the bottom pile and top pile on the right side of the bottom pile, you could use both hands and pick up the middle pile on your left w the right hand, putting it on the bottom pile / or the bottom pile w your right hand and put it on the middle pile that is on your left and the top pile on your right with your left hand, putting the top pile still on top, to distract the spectator. - You could do a Magicians Choice. Did you ever hear of this? No matter how you make the 3 piles, knowing where your top pile is, - have a spectator point to 2 piles, and if they point to the middle and bottom piles, use them, and put the bottom pile on the middle pile and then put the top pile on top. If they point to the middle and top piles, take the bottom pile and put it between the middle and top piles, making sure the top pile is on top. And if they pick the bottom and top piles, then put the middle pile under the bottom pile and still keep the top pile on top. This is with the top and middle piles on either side of the bottom pile. I have a few more thoughts for the beginning of the trick. Lol. - You can cut the deck in 2 piles and have your spectator point to either pile. You say, POINT TO EITHER PILE TO USE. You are still going to use both piles. They don't know that. Lol. If they point to the bottom pile, take off half of the top half and put that pile in between the two halves and continue with your trick. If they point to your top half, this is the Magicians Choice. Say, OK, and do the same thing. Lol. - you could use my ideas that I mentioned with your 7s on top of the deck in the beginning, but why not just have them already at the bottom of the deck? So when you deal your cards to make the number 7, just use 7 cards, putting 3 on the slant and 4 across. Then, when you remove the 3, put them on top or somewhere in the middle of the deck. If you like that idea, then You dont even need to call the trick 7 ? Say your number is 4 and deal down the top 4 cards or any 4 cards from different parts of the deck. You can fan the cards and have 1 or 4 spectators pick 4 cards to use. Sorry to change your trick, lol. If you have your 7s on the bottom, just do those cuts the same way, but remembering to keep the bottom pile on the bottom w the 3 piles, and Use the Magicians Choice to keep the bottom pile on the bottom. You still do your bottom deal with the first card, like you did, but im not very good w the bottom deal, so I was thinking of grabbing the bottom card as the spectator is reaching and turning over each card, so they arent watching me deal. Hopefully, all the other eyes are watching what card is being turned over so no one catches me dealing from the bottom. Let me know what ya think 🤔. If you want, I will give ya 1 more really AWESOME idea and see what ya think. I have a few thoughts about using a gimmick card in the beginning. Plus, doing some false shuffles or other shuffles in the beginning, so you are showing that you are being fair and honest, BUT? LOL 😆 🤣. Let me know. Thanks, Kim. I hope this was helpful. Blessings, Glen

I realized that if i say my favorite number is 4 and deal 4 cards on table. I would have the four 4s already on the bottom of the deck in the beginning, not 7s, lol. That is a great trick to work on and perform. Thanks again. If you want, I can share the few other ideas that you can use for this trick and many other tricks that you do. If not, I wish you the best. Glen

Very helpful! I believe court orders bind the parents and other 'parties' to the court orders. They do not bind us. So they bind the parents and anyone else who also is represented in the court case e.g. grandparents. So if we're unaware of court orders and therefore don't follow them, my understanding is that we're not breaking the law - as we were unaware of them. It is the responsibility of the parents and other represented parties who are bound by the orders to follow them, and if they do not do this, it is a criminal offense. E.g. if a court order states that one parent has sole parental responsibility for health and will solely liaise with healthcare providers, and we are unaware and liaise with the other parent, it is that other parent who has broken the law by liaising with us, and we have not broken the law. This is why schools, for example, will enrol children who are court-ordered by stay in a different school. They are not bound by the court orders, and have a duty of care to allow the child access to education. Let me know if you believe this is wrong. I'm loving this channel, by the way!!!
