Tasting the Sauce (Cells part 2)

In this video, I build upon the previous lesson of using Cells with the Pentatonic Scale (or music's little black dress) by adding 2 notes to the scale. By adding 2 notes you make entirely different scales or modes. By using the "Cells" idea, you can experiment with different notes and "Taste the Sauce" to see if you like it. I don't script or edit these videos and I misnamed the scale around 6...

      I use the Bose S1. If I am in a situation where there is a PA system, then I usually plug directly into the board or stagebox and with small EQ moves from there. The cleaner the Amp the better. Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I own one of these as well. I did not care for the amplifier set up either. They could have done better. The sound seems too fake. Almost like a toy. Especially the options that they have for it. The reverb is especially terrible. You have managed to work past those challenges. I applaud you. I went to a Cordoba stage guitar. They have a different issue. The have a built in mic set up the seems to accentuate the finger noise on the strings. I’m going to try mounting the strings with string blocks to see if it reduces the noise.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I hope you find a solution. Here's a look into my thinking: I was never happy with the "mic'd" sound of my classical guitar. It was inconsistent, it would feedback, there would be an annoying amount of cables and other devices that could all fail. The Yamaha solved all of that for me. As soon as you mic an acoustic/nylon instrument, in my mind, you have "electrified" it. The mic will color and change the sound, the amp will color and change the sound, the pedals, and cables will all have an impact and the sound will not be the natural sound of the guitar alone. In the two years that I have been gigging on the Yamaha Silent Guitar, I have received nothing but praise for it's sound and ease of set up. Other guitarists (electric and acoustic alike) have miles of pedals and other gear between them and the audience, where as I am plugging directly into my Bose S1 or the Mixing Board. One cable and beautiful sound every single time. The little nudgy things I talked about in this review, although true, do not get in the way of the end results. For me, that is what matters. I would buy another in heartbeat!

    Hey there. I've got one too. A little bit of plumber's tape works for the strap nuts. I keep it together all the time and carry it in an electric guitar soft case. Less of a hassle than squeezing it into the original case. The boomy bass problem can be alleviated a bit if you play the guitar with its volume up full. Thanks for the review.

    Has anyone ever taken one of these on a plane? That is a big consideration for me.

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 2 місяці тому

      Great question! I recently flew from Montreal, Canada to Catania, Sicily with a classical guitar and a travel Harmonium. I check the classical guitar - I use this flight case www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GTSAGTRClass--gator-ata-molded-guitar-case-with-tsa-latches-for-classical-guitars . We were able to store the harmonium in the overhead compartments of all the planes we flew on. That was easy! The Silent Guitar case is small enough to fit in an Overhead compartment, however, unless you pay for priority seating, extra seat, or the airline is willing to store it in the cabin area, it may not fit or get jostled around by others who are not going to be as careful with your instrument as you are. It takes up more space than typical carry on luggage because of it's length. Each airline is going to interpret musician rules differently. It is a soft case with good padding but I wouldn't trust it in a checked luggage situation, and that may be what happens. I know some folks have lost instruments or luggage but I haven't had that experience in all the times I have flown, even with Mt. Etna is erupting and causing flight plans to become totally derailed. Sometimes luggage is delayed but never completely lost. Hope this helps.

    Invaluable studio tool for me, when the furnace runs 8 months a year. Mic’d acoustic is a no go.. Unless I build an acoustic room, and I dont play enough acoustic for that. So plug right into the interface, turn it all the way to mic, because piezo pickups sound like shit. And its perfectly mic’d acoustic. I just add a virtual room, in the DAW.. Its also great in the duo I play in with a Maschine Kontrol complete DJ style player. We do it all in the box. Stage volume is silent. Just a couple SM58’s take out the in ears and all you hear is voice and tip tap on buttons and my stings. Its zero stage noise zero mic bleed, which makes our mics track better in our VE500 vocal pedals. Its really invaluable but UGLY! Its time for a new update version, these have been out for so long. And weve had amazing advancements in tech since.

    Tempo rubato, old topic in artistic license. Beethoven, in his late period composition, sometimes strictly forbade temo liberty like this, and the result is emotionally powerful. Emotion is dynamic and unpredictable. Copying the playing style of another is only good if it leads one out of a rut and into the realm of exploration.

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I think of written music, scripts to plays or speeches, as "disembodied". The goal of the artist is to "embody" the art. To bring to life that which is captured on the written page. I understand Beethoven's desire to control his art as it was very much alive in his mind while he was composing it. However, in the act of writing it down, there will be information that can never be conveyed to another person. The emotions that were felt in the act of composition are personal experiences that no one else will ever feel in exactly the same way. Part of the creative process is letting the art go out into the world where it will be experienced and responded to in ways that the artist never intended.

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 3 місяці тому

      I have not played the Cordoba - I have played some their regular classical guitars - I bet it plays nicely, but it looks "chambered" and my experience with "hollow body" guitars is feedback. It looks like it has piezo and a "body mic", that means feedback to me. If all things are equal and one guitar feeds back and the other doesn't, then for my purposes, I will choose the "no feedback guitar" every time. I had a Yamaha NTX1 for a week and returned it due to feedback issues. So even though I really like the Silent Guitar, if it didn't solve the Feedback issue, I wouldn't be playing it. I hope this helps!

    Thanks for the Video! Im 65 and decided to learn guitar... I was going straight for aa Les Paul Studio not a traditional choice I know. Then I cam across this Yamaha. i like it. To learn and to grow for my personal enjoyment. What do you think.?

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and Commenting! I have never been a fan of heavy (weight) guitars! The Les Paul is heavy - 8-10 pounds or so - about the same as my Schecter ( 8ish pounds) which I bought while my Parker (4 pounds) was getting frankensteined! The Yamaha Silent Guitar is around 4 pounds as well. Very light, easy on the shoulder. But you should get a guitar that is going to give you the most music options - if you like playing rock and blues styles - get the Les Paul, but if you want to play classical finger style music - then the Yamaha is the way to go. Hope this helps.

    Great review, very detailed and fair. As I am a total beginner, do you think this would be a good first guitar? I like the idea it can be played quietly while my wife sleeps and such, and that it is light and portable. My budget for just the guitar is about $700 Max and I’ve been looking at mostly this, the Cordoba Stage, and Ibanez FHR10/TOD10. Thanks again!

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 4 місяці тому

      Excellent question - I have never played the Cordoba or the Ibanez models, so I can't speak to how they feel, react to pedals, or loud amplification. Since you are a beginner, any of these models will be long term guitars for you. I think the only draw back to these instruments is you need amplification (except for the headphone jack on the Yamaha!) - good acoustic guitar amplification for classical guitar is harder to get - I guess 15watt Fender Acoustisonic might be an inexpensive way to go but I don't like the sound of Acoustic guitar amplifiers which is why I use the Bose S1 Pro. Before the Bose - I used a mixer and self-powered studio monitors!!! Good Luck!

      Great question! I think to find out, all you need to do is put a set of normal tension nylon strings on it. People might look at you funny but I've certainly strung nylon strings on a steel string acoustic. Since this works with Piezo pickups - it "should" work but if it doesn't you didn't have to invest much to find out. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

    Interesting! I have a serious nickel allergy and this might be the only way I can play electric guitar. All the strings I've tried contain nickel including stainless steel. The only issue I see with this guitar would be the frets which are likely nickel.

      It is possible they are nickel, I actually can't tell you, but my other guitar's frets are stainless steel, so maybe they are too - I can't tell from the specs. I suppose if you really wanted to, you could get it refretted with stainless steel frets and maybe that would help. Best of luck! Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for doing this review. Is there a reason you use a strap rather than a foot rest to get the guitar in the correct position? Do you just not like foot rests?

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 5 місяців тому

      I don't use a foot rest with my regular classical guitar, instead I use a Sage Works guitar support. I found that by keeping my feet flat on the floor and my hips level that my lower back is happy with hours of playing. The silent guitar doesn't have a good portable support system outside of using a Strap. The guitar is light enough that it doesn't bother my shoulder and I get the benefit of keeping my feet flat on the floor. And at a lot of gigs I am standing and playing classical music/jazz/popular song....anyway, so strap it is! Thanks for watching, hope this is helpful.

      Thanks very much for the quick response. I'm thinking of getting this guitar, but I am a little concerned about the mixed reviews I've seen regarding its ergonomics. Some say it's not comfortable to hold with thin, relatively sharp edge sides. Unfortunately, i can't find one in any of the local shops to try. I've tried playing a guitar with a strap but I found it difficult because it didn't feel stable. The guitar would move around too much as I tried to go up or down the neck. That's probably just me and may be something I could overcome with practice.

      @ShavasanaKitty 5 місяців тому

      @@patrickhawley600 I play live on it multiple times a week and have not found it to be problematic but you do want to have a nice strap (wider is better). Once I set myself up, I think it feels close enough, maybe the neck is a couple of degrees closer to my left shoulder than when I am playing my classical. I still prefer my classical but for gigging in the situations I play in, the Yamaha wins every time. The pros out weigh any cons for me.

    This is actually pretty neat. I have a classical guitar that I use for playing metal and stoner rock in low tunings. I like the dynamics from a classical guitar for those hard styles of music- provides a nice "bloom" effect for example for doom riffs. But its hard to bring out those dynamics with amplification and pedals. There aren't many examples out there of players using classical guitars with effects/distortion. There are more for steel string (ex Billy Strings). I've been wondering what pickup or combination of pickups to use for my classical. Usually when you play acoustic guitar through amps/effects you lose certain frequencies and get too much of others- it doesn't respond like an electric guitar. But this sounds pretty good. I will use this to inform my sound!

    Thanks for review, but I got a question. Previously I already had SLG 200s, but I sold it after I moved to a good isolated flat and lived alone. Now live with my girlfriend and I think to buy it again. The issue is that my flat has 2 rooms separated by WC/Bad (Room 1 - WC/Bad - Room 2), but there are no doors at all. Kitched on the second floor also without any door between. If I remember SLG 200s was pretty silent, but metal strings are not silent. It would 100% help with closed door, but I think it will be still noticable in my situation in case I'm in room 1 and my girlfriend sleeping in room 2. This is why I'm taking a look on a Nylon version and I wanted classical guitar anyways :) Questio is, do you think that slg 200 N version will help in my case in comparison with slg 200 S? Probably if I will hard strumming, no, but if soft fingerstyle playing? Just learning something like tremolo or training songs like game of thrones, last of us etc...? Thanks for any info! :) p.s. its less important, but interesting point aswell - Do you know if this guitar exist with max 46mm neck? Normally I play steel strings and 45mm neck. So 52mm would be probably overkill and dont know if I will adapt to such differences here and there all the time. I'm not that professional, learning guitar only around 8 months.

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 5 місяців тому

      I think the Nylon Silent Guitar is about as loud as a solid body electric guitar unplugged, not loud at all. If someone is watching tv or listening to music, they wont hear you at all. If it is really quiet, sure they will hear your practice but it isn't intrusive, not like an acoustic instrument. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting!

      Absolutely! The "Autumn Leaves" style riff is found in a lot of songs. I love taking a song like Still Got the Blues and seeing how many ways I can play it. Here is a video I shared only with my newsletter folks for a "Stray Cat Strut" style riff. fingerings were include in the newsletter. studio.ua-cam.com/users/videotpHcX0e9F2c/edit

    Thanks for the excellent review. Guitarlift make a support for the Yamaha silent range although you may find it a little too bulky for travelling. As far as supports for classical guitars go however I can’t praise guitarlift enough, they are just incredibly stable and reliable. Best Wishes.

    Hi, may I ask, what's the difference between slg200n and slg200nw? I'm planning to get one, thought that they will release a new version (waited for a couple years already), but also need a headset, any recommendations? :)

    • @ShavasanaKitty
      @ShavasanaKitty 5 місяців тому

      So the difference between 200n and 200wn is the size of the nut (width of the neck) I use the regular nut and it feels just like my classical guitar so I am not sure I would want the wide nut version. The guitar comes with Yamaha ear buds - they are good enough to get you rolling. I almost never play this with headphones on, just isn't how I am using it. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting!

    Gap between bridge and pickup under high e string is common for that type of pickup. Next time you change strings pull bridge out and put a scrap of typing paper on the pickup in that area. Could make another better shaped bridge, but paper is a reliable fix. Use layers cigarette paper for "perfect fit". Cheers.
