      @@DougMurakamiArt Thanks very much for replying and answering. Actually, it's often a relief to hear that artists I respect use reference. For some reason, I wrongly believe that we should be painting from memory, or even imagination. But when I reflect on it, this belief is very unhelpful and a real hinderance to my progress. So thank you for your answer. Best wishes to you.

    See what I mean! This painting is warmer and has cohesion across the entire painting. Notice how the Yellow Ochre (complements to the blue sky) looks natural? And, the underlying yellow texture aids the hills and grass land? I think I mentioned in the past that Karen Margulis will tone her paper with watercolors then apply the pastel on top of the watercolor-toned paper. She will watercolor/tone the paper in such a way to help with values and to give an under-glow that you just cant get with top-side pastel alone. She will also tone the canvas with pastels, then spray lots of rubbing alcohol on the toned paper. This gives the toned paper a unique artistic watercolor look that you can't do with a brush/pastel. This will show through the final work. Good job, Douglas!

      Thank you Robert! I will experiment more these techniques! 😊

    • @RobertHopkinsArt
      @RobertHopkinsArt 3 місяці тому

      Last night, before going to bed (LOL!), I revisited our conversation with some deeper reflection. In traditional painting, when preparing the canvas, we typically blend Yellow Ochre or another neutral hue with Titanium White to create varied tones on the canvas. This technique results in a canvas exhibiting a range of tones, from light to dark Yellow Ochre. While it's convenient to use Rebelle's Canvas Color button to fill the canvas with a single color, this doesn't accurately replicate the process in real-life painting. Henceforth, I've decided to abandon this practice. Instead, I'll apply a flat layer of my chosen toning color using a flat paint (perhaps spray paint), followed by blending to achieve a smoother texture. Throughout the painting process, I'll introduce white in lighter areas to adjust the value and retain more Yellow Ochre in darker regions. This may aid us in getting a more traditional look that is missing when we paint in digital. Watch this video by Malcom Dewey where he explains the toning process in depth: "How to Tone Your Painting Canvas (Colors and Effects)" Happy Painting!

  • @RobertHopkinsArt
    @RobertHopkinsArt 3 місяці тому

    Nice work, Doug! Other than the center focal point on the clouds, the paper looks nice with the Soft Pastel brush. Early on in the painting you applied some very dark strokes of pastel dead-center and that is what was so hard for you to remove. The pastel worked itself into the grooves of the canvas. The blender could have removed the dark paint but that defeats the purpose of a one-brush challenge? Remember that pastel artists never use white paper. It's always a neutral tint of some kind (tan/yellow/black/gray, etc.). My suggestion is to always tone the canvas right up front with a locked bottom layer to allow that bottom glow to help enhance the top colors. Monet and friends would have always toned the canvas a Yellow Ocher in a sunlit daytime landscape. I always tone my canvas before painting IRL. It makes such a huge difference with the result. Have a look at the "TOPofART Painting Reproductions" YT channel and you will see what I mean. Great study, Mate!

    • @DougMurakamiArt
      @DougMurakamiArt 3 місяці тому

      Thanks Robert for the tips!! Yes that dark spots!! hahaha so annoying! I do blender sometimes, but with the same brush that i'm using, so it's valid! Good point about the colors of papers, i didn't know anything about that! Now that you mentioned i saw some artists making it indeed. I will try next time! Thanks Robert! 🥰

    • @RobertHopkinsArt
      @RobertHopkinsArt 3 місяці тому

      I recently shared my newest painting on the Rebelle Forum gallery, featuring a purple-toned canvas. The concept behind this choice is to sometimes use a toned canvas that complements the dominant color in the painting. One of my personal favorite pieces depicts a mountain forest/hillside scene, predominantly in various shades of green, for which I opted for a deeply red-toned canvas. This intentional toning allows subtle hints of the canvas to peek through, contributing to a sense of unity throughout the painting. Additionally, it assists in achieving accurate values. I am so glad I could contribute this time! Another YT "Master" artist to watch is Vladimir Volegov. You will gain a lot of knowledge from him if you watch him paint. He almost always tones his canvas. He is a true Master that has been painting in oils since he was a kid. Funny thing is... My latest Van Gogh "real-life oil paints" painting that I am working on, I did "not" tone the canvas at all. No Gouache or acrylic paint was used. Straight canvas. Oil paint right on top of canvas. Van Gogh did not prep the canvas at all on his "Wheat Field/Cypress" painting. It took me a while to figure that out, but if you look at the painting up close you can see the un-prepped canvas. Impasto all the way FTW!!!

    Nice work, Doug! Simple and clean, which is exactly what high-plateaus look like. This reminds me of the land in Nevada, U.S. where I lived for many years. How are you liking the EX28 to EX30 papers? I noticed Justice uses the EX29 and was considering trying them. I am noticing that Carlos Herrera uses textured layers "multiplied" above or below his paintings to give his paintings texture where he wants it. It's worth a try if you haven't done that.

    • @DougMurakamiArt
      @DougMurakamiArt 4 місяці тому

      Hah, if you didn't tell me the paper, I wouldn't know what I was using, i liked these ones, the textures are nice, I wanted to try other papers too, tbh I didn't know that rebelle had so many papers...But overall the canvas are what I like more, it feels more natural...but yeah i need to test these overlapping papers, I just like to keep it simple.

    • @RobertHopkinsArt
      @RobertHopkinsArt 4 місяці тому

      The default canvas is so-so, and I agree that maybe these updated canvases will react more like the real-deal. I will pick up some of them later. I'm going through a phase right now of just using the "simple" non-texture (with different colors toning) and adding the brush stroke textures after I'm done with the painting on a multiple or linear burn layer. In my latest painting I'm using a brush that I created from ArtRage called the Square Canvas 2 brush. It's basically a canvas "grain/lens" with a sold square background. Tweaked it has wonderful blending properties, but sometimes the grain of the canvas in the brush shows through. Since you have those wonderful canvas swatches now you should make a couple brushes using those wonderful textures as the grain. Daniel Ibanez turned me onto that brush in ArtRage, then applying an oil brush on top in a second pass is wonderful! Thanks for sharing all of your info like you do, Doug. You are a true gentleman!

      Here's the rewrite: Doug, you're totally on point! I know I've been waiting to hit record, but I feel ready now as an artist. I finally have a message to share online and help others. To keep things simple, I'll be using Quicktime and iMovie on my Mac for video production. Your English is fantastic! Keep at it. Talking in your videos can definitely boost your subscriber count, just like it did for Victor Staris. He's another incredible artist on UA-cam who shares insightful wisdom. I love learning from his channel. Feeling a little camera shy? Here's an idea: Try slowing down your videos slightly. Write a script in Portuguese of what you want to say, then translate it with Google Translate. After that, use the "rewrite:" command with ChatGPT to refine the English. This translated script can be your voiceover for the video. **In the long run, this consistent practice will significantly improve your English fluency. You're already really close! I want to emphasize that I'm not aiming to be an overly devoted fan (FanBoi) or come across as someone who knows everything (because I don't!). However, Karen's second-to-last UA-cam video is genuinely enlightening ("Paint with Confidence with 6 Simple Steps! Pastel Demo for All!"). Her six-step process for crafting an outstanding pastel painting seems to be an excellent guide for us in Rebelle. By mastering the paintbrush's direction, considering the use of potentially larger brushes, and concentrating on achieving thin paint layers, akin to her technique, we might attain a more painterly outcome. It's indisputable that her artwork exudes a distinct painterly quality! Furthermore, since we can capture the exact colors she employs in her paintings (via a screen print) and import them into a color set in Rebelle, we have the chance to apply those colors across various paintings. Given the abundance of her artwork available online, applying a color set from one of her paintings to different landscape scenarios becomes a practical and thrilling prospect. I've crafted a blog post on my website detailing her process with screen prints illustrating the different stages to follow. Today, I plan to paint an image using this technique. While I'm still a novice with Rebelle 7, I anticipate it to be an enjoyable experience!

      Hahaha you re a true fan boy, and it's all good, don't need to worry about that! For me personally, i like to try the colors by eye, without to import the colors into the program, you can learn so much doing this, even if is not perfectly the same color.. because you can experiment new colors later. But it's me. The brush strokes i need to get better in Rebelle, my biggest complain is the fact the max brush is 700 only, it's so small on a big canvas, i need to make 100 strokes rather than 2-3 if it had big brushes like Photoshop, very annoying..Idk but some brushes don't scale as big as others, so you can have 700 size but the real size is 300 or so... it's like the limit. The beauty about internet today, you can choose the best artists and pick what you like and incorporate that in your own work style.

      Good that we got that out of the way. The FanBoi bit. :) I have started her technique. I am messing around with the Flat Soft Pastel. I set my canvas size to 8" x 10" (20.32cm x 25.4cm) and the brush size at its maximum is about the size of a real pastel. I watched her video and she is mostly using the pastel in a horizontal direction (90°, "set" rotation), mostly. Sometimes it is about a 20° right-handed tilt off of axis from being a horizontal brush. I may set the angle of the brush using my LoupeDeck rotary knob so I can change the angle of the brush from a "set" value of 90° to anything I like real-time (110°+/-). The default blender works just fine for blending the base stage of the painting. Like she does using water pipe insulation to blend with. I am also considering getting some of the Rebelle "paid" papers that emulate real pastel paper better than the default one does. The RH05 Rough default canvas is close to the real-deal but not as grainy as real papers are. I have a bunch of real paper in a closet somewhere. Happy painting, Dude. Have a good day!
