    Love this video! I’ve never seen a video like this before, getting the models perspective on what they want to see. One thing you kept emphasizing which I liked is that models are human beings too! I like to have everyday conversations with my model, ask them questions about themselves. Some questions I like to ask is “how’d you get into modeling or what are your modeling goals?” Other more laid back questions I ask is, are you watching any tv shows right now? Or going back to the point on music, what type of music are you into? Lastly something I think is also good is telling the model they’re doing a great job during the shoot, especially if they’re someone who hasn’t modeled very much. Just giving positive words of encouragement and affirmation is great. Great video Joe! I definitely picked up some gems here from getting the model’s perspective

      Thank you for watching and I’m happy you found this helpful! Also, thank you for your input!!! Having normal conversations with your model is so important. “The way I describe a photographer is kind of like a mirror for a model as his movements or behaviour can reflect the model’s behaviour . If the model doesn't feel comfortable on taking certain shots or comfortable on making poses, it is because the photographer doesn't give her the positive vibes so she can feel calm and relaxed. Sometimes you see the photographer confused or stressed, and that doesn't help the model at all. I do remember a few months ago while taking shoots I had a photographer where he was asking me how I'd like to take the shoot. I think this is not the right way to start as the photographer should already come with some ideas and be ready/prepared mentally. Just after a few shots, in that case, you can ask the model if they have any poses in mind, cause once we are in the middle of the fantasy and creation everything comes automatically . We just need to be given the first steps from the photographer then gradually we open up ourselves, Basically the way he talks to the model, the way he approaches the model, or the way he takes the situation (of course with a smile too) can change the view of the shoot”. Definitely a new perspective compared to the answers in the video. Treating yourself as a “mirror” for the model - I alluded to this in the video when I said if you are uptight and overly professional, they will also be uptight and overly professional. The model will naturally mirror your emotions, because again, THIS IS A COLLABORATIVE EXPERIENCE. So be careful how you express your emotions on your shoot. If you’re stressed, try not to show that too much because if the model notices you are stressed, they will also get stressed which will not help with the photos and the posing process. “The photographer should already come with some ideas and be ready/prepared mentally” - one thing that will help with this is CREATING A MOOD BOARD. Prepare yourself for the shoot at hand. What is the vibe you are going for? What should they wear? What compositions or lenses do you think you will use? Having these things ready shows that you are a well prepared photographer which tells the model that they are in good hands, which will inevitably make them less uptight and anxious. Of course you can ask for help from the model but giving them those “first few steps” will make it much easier for them to help with different ideas for poses, etc. I’ve been on shoots where I’ve asked the model straight away “What’s your favourite pose”? I wouldn’t say this is particularly a bad thing, but the best way to go about it is to already have a few poses in mind before you ask the model for their perspective and their creative input. In my experience, asking the model for pose ideas later on in the shoot is much better as like they said In the answer, by then the theme and vibe or ‘fantasy’ of the shoot is embedded so the model’s posing ideas will come more naturally. I hope you find this useful, thank you for watching and reading :)

      Of course I do. I’ve been in their affiliate program for months now. The video is primarily based on how to navigate a pro mist filter in your portrait photography, I only mentioned the Moody FX filter as that is the one I used. I don’t believe i gave any bias opinions on this filter though (I don’t even use it anymore and I tell you when you shouldn’t use it). But if you want the filter, I feel like I have to mention my discount code to save you guys some money :) Thank you for watching!

    Regarding the chart at 00:16 changing the ISO instead of the shutter speed to expose properly isnt what you should be doing most of the time. Shutter speed should only stay untouched if you need the right amount of motion blur or none of it(Panning shots of cars with blurred out background, Long Exposure) depending on the situation. When you shoot landscape, portraits, etc. Shutterspeed should be changed in order to get the correct exposure. Since upping your ISO has pretty much the most noticeable effect on an image since you are "digitally" changing the censors sensitivity to light. Its often based on the situation you are in. Cant really tell people what they need to be doing in general when its often heavily dependant on the situation and what you are shooting and what is important to you.

    • @TheGeniusOfJoe
      @TheGeniusOfJoe Місяць тому

      I see what you mean but the guide was for portrait photographers so I’m only referring to taking portraits of people. If you want less exposure, you turndown the iso before turning down the shutter speed. I agree with you, but again, I’m talking specifically portrait photography :) Thank you for watching!!

    • @PhilippWiddra
      @PhilippWiddra Місяць тому

      From an hobbyist event/wildlife/streetphotography standpoint I would say changing the shutter speed isn't always good option either. In these cases (shooting from the hip, fast moving subjects etc.) upping the ISO is perfectly valid. But in portrait or landscape especially with a tripod I would always prefer a longer exposure time. So it comes back to your style of portraiture work: Model holding poses very well and using a tripod, slow the shutter speed. But often enough (looks like Joe is doing some very dynamic portraits) you want to catch the moment and upping the ISO to freeze the movement of e.g. hair or that one genuine smile seems reasonable for me. ISO 1600 or even higher shouldn't be a problem with modern full frame cameras, fast lenses, Lightroom and AI noise reduction.
