Kyle Bosman: giving a chatroom permission to derail & build a stream - Early Output with Disco Fever
Only timestamps in this description cause I hit the character limit
0:00 Chapter 1: This is the story of some dude named Kyle Bosman. Not a video essayist, but an old school comedic skit commentator / journalist with a style streamers have unintentionally been aspiring to.
- 2:09 Chapter 1.1: I didn’t care about Bosman’s Gate III but now I do.
- 3:17 1.2: Kyle Bosman - the hidden old guard of the gaming industry and a comedic video game skit commentator (not a reviewer).
- 5:32 1.3: Delayed Input's editorials aren’t essays…right?
- 8:10 1.4: Is Kyle a professional gamer?
- 8:58 1.5: The prelude to the scripted versus the spontaneous editorial (AKA Chapter 7).
- 11:04 1.6: Streams are part talk shows, part let’s plays.
12:17 Chapter 2: The oh no. Kyle thrives with specific ideas over relentless improvisational comedy. Commentary is a quick, constant choice. Slice of life is an easy ally, improvisation is a difficult enemy.
- 13:47 2.1 A portrait of a streamer as a Bosman - Let's Plays are improvisational at the core. Kyle’s great, but occasional improv.
- 16:52 2.2 A Stratagem in the rough versus Nyanners, Vargskelethor Joel, and Scoot of YourMovieSucks fame (also Northernlion). Kyle is not quite relentless in comparison.
19:27 Chapter 3. An average Streamer has two central elements: the game and chat. Kyle and the community mix both like cookies and cream.
23:03 Chapter 4. Digital world (WE'RE GOOD): Streams are talk shows. How streamers talk to chat changes. Kyle actively and uniquely encourages his chat to talk to him.
- 25:31 4.1 Chat is good, real good. The chat can pick where the stream goes.
30:00 Chapter 5: Permission to derail. Kyle and chat go on tangents that make the stream more than just a game. Building steam with a grain of salt. A tangent is fuel. Is there something you need to tell me, big buddy?
- 31:12 5.1 How to derail a stream.
- 34:43 5.2 Derailing leads to new destinations nearby, but it makes your trip take longer. A two way rail of definitions - derails might be related to the game-or not.
- 36:43 5.3 Not everyone will like the derail if they’re fans of immersive games done quick.
- 39:37 5.4 Derails can only be done on a stream. They’re flexible (like an “oh ya”), unpredictably refreshing, and in-depth - all good reasons to do them.
41:52 Chapter 6: The oh ya. Kyle measures the pulse of his chatroom. The chat is encouraged to participate in the stream with their stories and interests.
- 43:24 6.1 The Bosman Electric - describing the stream soundboard.
- 47:37 6.2 Oh yeah, it’s all coming together. A powerful tool.
- 49:19 6.3 Three reasons why the oh ya is different from other community expressions - flexibility, mobility, and continuity.
- 50:30 6.4 Oh yas measure a pulse of a stream, a bloodstream. How is the community doing?
- 52:52 6.5 Best in the biz: an oh ya is as divine as the most experimental.
58:42 Chapter 7. Input delayed, but input often: streamers talk freely about the game industry and more.
- 1:01:07 7.1 The derail and the oh ya are flaming orbs in the human hands = the Bosman combo: comBosman
1:03:30 Chapter 8. The woo: Kyle and the planned community event - Robot Party music and game Jam.
- 1:04:21 8.1: Fan art can be more than a painting. It can be a musical mural of combined community effort and a short barbecue game. Let the chat cook.
1:06:27 Chapter 9: IF YOU want to build it freely… just go ahead now. This stream’s story is built by its community events - stories directed by chat. I also talk about stream breaks here, again.
- 1:08:11 9.1 Fan art is hosted by the community.
- 1:09:24 9.2 The community keeps records of stream traditions.
- 1:10:42 9.3 The chat builds the stream, from the games played, to its music and icons.
- 1:11:12 9.4 Chat can make a bold statement (on a stream’s quality) - Charity, awards, and guessing the game.
1:13:25 Chapter 10. This is how we do it: a small, but strong and tight-knit community on discord. The community moves on its own without Kyle’s permission. A thank you to the Robot Party.
1:16:25 Chapter 11. The Final Robosman dreams - Kyle and the Robot Party dream. The dark prince of nerd media. A conclusion and TL;DR with credits.
1:22:24 Chapter 12, bonus bit: Love & Respect. Post-credit ideas which don’t need to be heard with on-ear, closed-back headphones.
1:27:13 Chapter 12, bonus bonus bit. A highlight compilation of stream traditions & 12.1, all about the stream references.
- 1:27:40 12.2 That's Mucho.
- 1:29:29 12.3 Platinum bells.
- 1:29:57 12.4 Digital world.
- 1:30:22 12.5 Cookies and cream.
- 1:31:03 12.6 Happy Monday.
- 1:32:03 12.7 Stream intro effect.
- 1:32:49 12.8 Miscellaneous highlights & traditions.
- 1:43:35 12.9 Dan (formerly on the couch).
- 1:46:22 12.10 Tim Rogers (and video essays).
- 1:50:16 12.11 Total Biscuit.
- 1:52:10 12.12 Games with dreams.
- 1:54:18 12.13 Six Flags Bugs Bunny...
- 1:59:46 12.14 Big buddy.
- 2:02:19 12.15 Sketch background.

A review of YourMovieSucks: a director of collaborative livestreaming
Переглядів 6495 місяців тому
On a traditional Sunday, YourMovieSucks, known as Adam or YMS, executes an entire strategy that responds to the call of oncoming traffic and its unpredictable movements. The inevitable traffic of the users of the stream chatroom. The strategy for responding to this call of the chatroom is simply brilliant: ask your friends to do it for you :P In rare form amongst the entire streaming industry, ...
A review of Matthewmatosis: secretly a unique streamer
Переглядів 2,7 тис.8 місяців тому
Extrinsically motivated, Matthewmatosis sought to evaporate the rust of a long hiatus, and speak into a microphone purposed for a live Halloween broadcast, a tradition maintained for years. This would be his first and only livestream of 2023. In that single livestream, Matthew was caught between two juxtaposed occupations: one meant to break down virtual entertainment to its components, and ano...
Streamers should copy Joseph Anderson's stream breaks
Переглядів 4,7 тис.Рік тому
This video includes some thoughts on mastering the art of streaming through scheduled breaks. A stream is all about the community, and every community member can benefit from a break. An intermission forges the opportunity for a cup of Joe. The heart flows with live streams, but it is not a live stream itself. You can break a stream. Yet, the heart swells and cascades, traced under pressure. Am...

Hey I stumbled upon this by chance and just wanted to thank you for putting so much effort into a niche combination of interests. I don't think I'll ever watch streams as a form of entertainment and only briefly skimped through some of Matthew's but the idea of analyzing what makes streams appealing intrigues me so you earned yourself a sub. The only criticism I have of your video is that (at least to me) there seems to be a big difference between Matthew and your other examples for analytical streamers. It may come across as condescending but the Bayonetta 3 example is not analytical for people who actually play these games. It's really just him saying "this is the first game like this since DMC5". I also don't think Anderson is a good critic, as his lengthy analysis usually boil down to summarizing the game and going "I did/didn't like this". Aside from the occasional immense amount of effort to prove a statement by looking at every possible case/example, he truly lacks the "insight" Matosis is talking about. Anderson's infamous 'post-stream analysis' of Silent Hill 2 also speaks volumes to anyone who played the game. He's also the type of critic who decides he's gonna review a game before actually bothering to play them. It's like he just assumes he has something interesting to say about everything, whereas Matthew doesn't review a game just because (as seen by his refusal to review new Souls/MGS/Mario games) and streams only games he loves. Not sure if this is just me fanboying for Matthew though, but from the video none of the other examples even came close to the simple insight of the ALTTP flute e.g. I really look forward to videos about the streamers you mentioned at the end though! I never assumed I'd care for streaming but if it is presented in such a scientific matter I'll be happy to see what you and they have in store. Hopefully those are already planned because it sure was a teasing ending!

@@kecksohn Streaming is at a point where any analysis is good analysis. Where any industry comparison is a step forward. The main thing about the Vinny Vinesauce example, where he briefly compares stylish action games, is that it is uncommon amongst streamers. Yet, it is as you say, it “is not analytical for people who actually play these games.” You’re right. Vinny’s audience is likely full of experienced gamers in fact, who might not really mind the lack of design talk. However Vinny is, at least, taking steps outside the game to understand its influences on a broader scale. At the time, this was the best example I could recall for an industry comparison and was legit a rare one for the streamers I was reviewing on RateYourMusic. Matthew is better at discussing design than Vinny, but both are great with industry talk. Funnily enough, Vinny is also meant to be complimentary to Joe for this video. If one doesn’t enjoy Joe, they’ll probably like Vinny. Joseph’s situation is similar to Vinny’s, streamers will seldom give anything close to the infamous Silent Hill 2 post-game talk or to his story criticisms. It’s about discussing a bad position rather than never discussing any extended position at all. Otherwise, most streamers say “yeah this game is good, nice story & music” (my favorite streamers do this) without talking more about a game’s story and themes. My criticism of Joe’s Silent Hill talk is that it’s actually too short (and that his 2018 public speaking skills could be better). That said, Joe’s strengths have been reevaluated since releasing this and he was mentioned more than need be. For what it’s worth & just like Silent Hill fans disagreeing with Joe, I disagree with Joe on Outer Wilds, but that means I disagree with everyone on that game, heh. Joe can definitely improve his own critiques to be more memorable, accessible, and convenient. Perhaps he could improve on summarizing games and organizing topics from Mandalore, but video essays are not my area to talk about + streams and video essays are in different states right now. Any stream analysis is good analysis. Even a bad extended review is a step forward for a stream. Joe prioritizing the review over the game seems like a case where that spills over to other streamers. A credible streamer + gaming commentator many enjoy, Kyle Bosman, has nearly the same approach to picking games to stream as Joe: a docket of games to play as requested by his community, with the occasional modern release and “GOTY homework.” Kyle makes videos on those modern releases and may pick games to keep up with the current industry. He does this more than Joe. If that comes close to planning on reviewing games before directly playing them in hopes of writing about it for his scripted videos, or playing games for the sake of industry research and not necessarily for the community or enjoyment, then it’s not often mentioned for Kyle and his range of work. A range of work which is even longer and more apt for reviews off of streams than Joseph’s. If the problems of reviewing out of obligation before playing apply to Joe then it seems like it should apply more to others like Kyle. To drive the point further, your criticism about the analytical practitioners does extend to the others mentioned. LilyPichu doesn’t often commentate analytically. That example was a single showing & she is over represented. Nina Kosaka with her current identity hasn’t repeated her post-game talks since her Metal Gear playthroughs, even with other games she enjoys. The significance of this rare strategy has largely lessened in power & intent over time. The SuperBestFriendsPlay in their current streaming iterations, as WoolieVS and PatStaresAt respectively (MattMcMuscles & Liam are a different story sorta), don’t really practice the same level of analysis / commentary they used to as Let’s Players. If they do, it’s on their podcast, & occasional on the streams. Something similar could be said for other great & influential streamers. Jerma985 can talk game industry, but rarely. So in addition to responding to your comment, I guess this is a sort of reflection for the video’s aftermath. A lot of the ideas in this video are difficult to measure and won’t age too well :P The video was mostly made using a specific demographic of streamers who made music, & I’ve since gone beyond that to understand the frequency and value of live-streamed game reviews. I’ve found others who more certainly analyze often, like Plague of Gripes during his Danganronpa playthrough with constant hot takes, and Action Button at times. TheGamingBrit comes close to Matthew’s style where the game doesn’t matter as much and the chatroom talk is the priority. For VTubers, maybe Cecilia Immergreen. I might have used them as analytical examples if I made this video after finding them. All that said and after a quick listen to Matthew’s Christmas stream, he still has a style of game design and industry talk that’s difficult to find, and rightfully outstanding as the best in the streaming biz. Thank you for the comment!

I've always loved Matthew's longform videos and always thought of his streams as a secondary thing, but this video made me realize the things he's said in his streams stuck with me more than most of the stuff he's said in his videos. That being said, the biggest reasons I think Matthew is such a good longform video maker lines up with the reasons you like him as a streamer. He always respected the audience and their intelligence, but also always put in the extra effort to make sure as wide of an audience as possible can understand him.I also like how as a creator in general, he's always trying to evolve. I hope the games he develops will be good.

Matts streams were great, I still go back and watch them sometimes. A lot of the most insightful things I've heard from Matt have been from his streams. There's a lot of discussion in the streams he'd probably consider too unrefined to put in a video, like the many rants about cameras, which can be just as interesting.

Matosis has assays, but is not an assayest, he is a critic, a material critic. An assay is a more loose and poetic form of connecting ideas in the sense of where the form contemplates the themes of analyzed material. Even though matosis uses this concept in his videos, he is way more structured, trying to and explain the analysis in detail in the majority of his videos. Didn't watch the video in it's totality but sure will. Always good to find a fellow Matosis aficionado. 👍

To the extent that I installed a slow mode onto my entire discord server. I know this video probably exists partially as some inner community joke but I appreciate you for actually stating the case. Best of luck man.

Great video! I would suggest talking a bit quicker while narrating, as it can drag on a bit. Overall, though, I really like your content! 😊
