This is the paddle/water sport channel I created to document my progress from a newbie to paddling.
I started paddling during the covid pandemic when I purchased a kayak for my daughter.
Surfski: I had a V7 then a Fennix Swordfish S. Currently I own a V10L, a Fenn Elite and a Fenn Bonito. I am also into sea kayaks (4 currently) and sailing.

Great morning paddle! Fenn Blue-Fin S surfski & Riot Edge 14.5 sea kayak
Nick and I paddling around Browns Island on this clip. Nick is paddling his surfski while I am paddling a sea kayak Riot Edge 14.5. The water pollution in many locations in Auckland was rated black that day after all the rain (meaning wastewater overflow) so I didn't want to take the risk of capsizing paddling a surfski...

First time paddling a double sea kayak. It's fast! Barracuda AR Duo.
Переглядів 29814 днів тому
Nick and I paddled the AR Duo which is a double sea kayak that's fast. We reached 14 km/h (8.7 mph) and it was our first time! It is a kayak that is used as a multisport in New Zealand for races like the Coast to Coast. The clip was taken during a Wednesday evening paddle organised by Auckland Canoe Club. I highly recommend joining them if you wish to learn about paddling a sea kayak in Auckland.

This clip is about Nick paddling his surf ski. I am using my GoPro sideways. It was the last bit of a 27.3 km (17 miles) trip around Rangitoto island. It was very windy and we paddled against the tide both ways. It was the first time we did the circumnavigation of Rangitoto counterclockwise.

I finally managed to change the slow motion into a normal speed! It was recorded at 120 frames per second and for some reason it was going to slow motion after a few seconds in normal motion. This was taken right after Cyclone Gabrielle. It was quite windy and extremely choppy but no problem at all with the V7.

Current Designs Squall sea kayak: how fast?

This is about the discontinued rotomolded Squall. It is the low volume version of the Storm. Its dimensions are 503 cm x 55 cm (16'.6" x 22") and its weight is 27.7kg (61lbs). I find it very stable whatever the sea conditions and it is fast. A great kayak for cruising but also fun even in small waves.
Around St Heliers at low tide - Perception Spectrum sea kayak

A quick paddle around my beach at St Heliers at low tide. It is a miserable winter day, it rains often and it is cold too. Auckland is quite vicious with all the volcanic rocks everywhere, especially at low tide. It is easy to hit a submerged rock and I have seen sailboats sideways because of them. Plastic kayaks are good :) At high tide you see none of them.

Beautiful morning paddle - Epic V10L & Fenn Bluefin S surfskis
Looks beautiful😊! The Blue-Fin S is perfect in those choppy waters:)!
Looks great but then I read your comment about the water pollution...😒
Very nice conditions!
Great looking conditions. I finally got on the water for the first time since March a couple of days ago.
You walk on water on the Epic V10, but you haven't stopped walking on the Epic V7. Why ? After all, it is heavier and probably slower? I have a V7 and I'm thinking about cooler surf-ski in the future. Does this make sense - for downwind, boat surfing, fitness? Not for sports.
I don’t understand what you mean by walking? The V10L ultra is 11.6kg and the V7 is 24kg. It is also much faster than the V7 because it is longer (615 cm Vs 520 cm) and narrower (44 cm Vs 54 cm). There is no perfect surfski so you can one for downwind, one for flat water racing etc.
@@kayakintro For what conditions do you like Epic V7? Which skis are best for downwind?
Good afternoon In what program do you display the speed sensor on your video?
@@BelevichAB Good morning, I am using Quik from GoPro.
@@kayakintro thank you
Fun!! I've ever paddled a double kayak. Must have been a weird feeling in the beginning.
It is very weird at the beginning! I even had some shakes (despite the fact it is a stable kayak) because I was correcting the movement coming from the back seat 😂 After 5mn it is all good but occasionally it can feel strange to still keep moving after you stopped paddling because of the lack of synchronisation between paddlers. Sometimes it is like having a turbo too!
@@kayakintro haha.
Conditions looked good. Hope to get back on the water over the next few days, it's been way too many months since I last dipped a blade in the briny.
Wishing you some good weather! It is quite windy the last days here, and the same this week... So much rain too, we are getting wastewater on the beach.
@@kayakintro Yeah, we're into a period of wind coming up from penguin land. Appointment at hospital tomorrow.
Great paddle. How much do you weigh and height to paddle the little bonito?
Thanks! 175cm for 84kg. It is fine for me but it is better if you are 75kg and under as recommended by Fenn, it would be more stable (not that I find it unstable). It is surprisingly quick in downwind with steep waves. I can easily catch and overtake my friend Nick paddling his Bluefin which is 170cm longer!! Not the best on flat water, it needs waves to be fun. In the same category of short surfskis there is the Epic V5 which is more stable (60 cm wide Vs 50 for the Bonito). The V5 has a capacity of 125kg so is better if you are over 75kg.
How stable is the bluefin?
Stability is very personal so it really depends. Most people would find it very stable, me included. I raced on that one on a big downwind day and never capsized despite an elbow injury during the race: ua-cam.com/video/UVDgWzmRNn4/v-deo.htmlsi=7PHDcYqF6-8k10Gi I also know a decent sea kayaker who got a Bluefin lately and he fell in 3 times on a calm sea. Maybe it is the lack of knee support or was his previous sea kayak extremely stable? On the upside he could remount it easily.
How dangerous is the water if you fell in?
@@ntl9974 It is still cold so there is a danger of hypothermia if you can’t get back in. We both wear a PFD and I had a spare inflatable (canister) PFD in case things were going really wrong.
Beautiful there
@@IamNothing82 Yes, it was quite sunny but cold!
How do you get the speed display on your video? Great paddling, and awesome speed. I just got a new V7 this week and have been out on it only once. Looking forward to doing some fast paddling. I'm on Flat Water in the USA. I was looking for a Surfski that could take a beating, and still be fast, and that's what attracted me to the V7!
Hi! Thank you. I regret I sold it because it allowed me to paddle near the rocks. A great surfski anyway and its stowage is useful. I was using a GoPro 7 at that time and if you enable the GPS you can get the speedometer displayed by using their app named Quik. The GoPro 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 have the GPS, not the 12 so don’t get that one if you want to record the speed!
43 degrees F?? That temp can be lethal. At least he was with a buddy
Sounds like it's windy...:)
Windy and at some point I was slightly worried about capsizing because of the cold water 😅
@@kayakintro Do you have a drysuit on?
Probably a stupid question, but how do you display the km/h and direction on the video?
I use a Gopro 11 🙂
What nice conditions, wish i was there.
It was a day to take the surfski out!!
@@kayakintro i bet, looks like it. 🙂
Choppy, but smooth choppy...😎
Very smooth!
Stunning day. Looks like it's about to rain.
That day was fine, but the 3 last days were awful!!
hi, nice padding. one of these is on trade me.. your paddle looks short as.
Hi thank you. It is a quite common robust kayak, I have seen a few around. It’s really fast for its length and easy to carry. The paddle isn’t that short, it is 205-215cm. It is this one: www.orkapaddles.com/shop/paddles/orka-paddle-super-flex-pro/
Now we're talking:)! Put me in a NK Nitro 600 there and I would be lost forever😂🤣! What's the name of that bridge?
It’s Auckland Harbour bridge! Sometimes you see people falling with bungee jumping 😂 I think you could do well with a NK 600 here 😂 There were a few paddlers that capsized that day, one was on a V9. The up and down at the start of the video was quite intense. I need to put the downwind bit that follows this clip at normal speed and to upload it.
@@kayakintro Naa, with those choppy waves coming from all directions I wouldn't stand a chance in a Nitro. The Fenn Blue-Fin S that I paddle sometimes would be perfect there though...😎
@@larscrantz Yes, the Bluefin would be great there. The V7 was fine, I believe the flexible plastic helps! The worst would be a full carbon elite surfski 🤣
You aint helpin! Getting the vehicle sorted so I can get to the water and back.
@@gadgetman_nz4092 Yesterday was a beautiful day in Auckland. Nearly summer hopefully.
@@kayakintro It's coming, it ain't here yet, but it's coming.
I agree with our friend from the Netherlands, beautiful colour of the sky. Great choppy sea as well, I love to paddle in those kinde of waters. I see some sailboats out, must be terrific wind to be sailing in...😊
@@larscrantz Thank you. It is often windy but with the wind taking you offshore. I don’t mind when it takes me back but offshore it’s more annoying 😂 At least I do have some islands I could stop.
Beautiful setting with the sky, waves and boats ❤
Thank you! It is beautiful near sunset time. Now if the weather could be warmer it would be perfect!
Summer and fun are coming.
We are having the winter coming back!! So much rain and icy wind.
Much respect, keep safe.
One thing Petter Mennings taught me that made a world of difference, paddle using leg drive only. But I couldn't achieve this in an olympic K1 so dropped back to the slightly wider marathon K1. Anyway hope this helps you.
@@conansmith3871 Please read the description: I wrote I can’t move my feet at all because the footplate area is too small. It is my daughter’s kayak.
@@kayakintro I don't move my feet either, they are locked hard to the footplate. Otherwise I would have power loss.
@@conansmith3871I have too long legs for it if it is clearer for you. It is the second time you post about leg drive but I am not asking for any advice. Also I use my legs when I can like at ua-cam.com/video/5y0QrudEs3Q/v-deo.htmlsi=BdY5UNUycMQhAbF4 but I have since a knee injury preventing me from pushing the footplate.
Nice trip again. Looks warm, but it isn't of what i read 😊
Yes it was cold! I wear shoes and I have two neoprene shirts. Nick is wearing some coat 😂 The problem with wearing shoes was the lack of space around them so they were totally locked in the footplate. It didn’t make the ride comfortable. Without shoes it’s no problem!
Stunning conditions, Spring is almost here. After the weekend I might have to get a paddle wet.
@@gadgetman_nz4092 I was in Christchurch with my daughter on Monday. It was COLD!!! And what a wind too! I got too used to Auckland 😂
@@kayakintro Yeah, that wind was coming straight up from penguin central. I suppose I'll have to let you claim that as cold for an Offshore Islander. Was snowing at the beach a little north of here. Now I have the OK to drive now but the wagon packed a sad. Get that back on the road tomorrow with a bit of luck.
It was a beautiful morning to be out☺️
@@nickaugust557 Just a pity I was up from 3am because of my daughter’s cold! Still a great time paddling!
Nice 2 c u back in a surfski 😊. Cold season over already?
It is not over at all! Was 5 degrees this morning. That video is from the time I had the Swordfish. It is all in the description 😊. I uploaded it because a friend from Puerto Rico wanted to know how it paddles. He paddles a V7 and used to have a Fenn XTS etc ua-cam.com/video/3BF7boBGTGk/v-deo.htmlsi=7XpEQAVtPB3Ve5yR I still paddle surfskis but mostly the sea kayaks because of the cold. Most of my surfski paddle in winter is boring because I follow the shore so I can still swim easily in case I fall in 😂
@@kayakintro i never read descriptions on YT, sorry abt that 🙏.
@@IamNothing82 No problem! If you watch from a phone I think it is harder to watch the description.

@@Rainy_Day_Bliss Me too but not in the rain if possible 😄
At certain point you're pushing against the hull speed with seakayaks and you will never go faster. Although, you don't have to go super fast to have fun and always nice to have a good workout 😊. 13-14 kmh is still impresive though. 💪
@@IamNothing82 You can go a lot faster than the hull speed! It is called planing. I reached 19 km/h on a sit on top that’s only 270 cm long (Viking Kayak Ozzie) on a big sea. There is a guy Surfski Estonia on YT who told me his fastest speed was on a white water kayak at sea and he usually paddles a Carbonology double surfski 😂
@@kayakintro true, but you can't go into planing on muscle power because you have to push the front over the bow wave, same what speedboats do. I've seen a video of someone that out a motor on it, it didn't go faster, but the kayak sinks deeper. There's a difference in landspeed and the actualy speeds that you move on the water. A white water kayak moves with the river that already had a certain speed Same with commercial planes can't go through the sound barrier, but when you're on a plane with a tail wind you see that the land speed exceeds the sound barrier.
@@IamNothing82 The hull speed is very theoretical. K1 can reach 18-20km/h when sprinting and they are only 520 cm long. They reach double the hull speed. I can paddle to 16km/h with the V10L on flat and that’s also well above the hull speed of a 615 cm kayak. When I race I see paddle boarders going as fast as surfskis, and yet they are on 14 ft long sup only. They certainly plane like surfboard.
Wow you got some really good speed!
@@Fishaholicboy Thanks! I usually paddle surfskis and I do a good use of the wind paddle!
It seems to be easy to get it up to speed...👍
@@larscrantz You need some power because it is heavy (27.7kg) and I had the trolley inside too (+4.5kg!). It’s more a boat for cruising and keeping a good speed thanks to its weight and inertia 🤣
@@kayakintro You're getting fitter and fitter when paddling such heavy boats...😂
@@larscrantzPaddling a surfski right after it certainly feels very light 😂
You're sure getting that rating up! Two more sleeps.
Two more sleeps and you have the V7? 😊 I like the Squall but I wish the cockpit would be slightly longer. I can’t sit in first then bring my legs in. I know people who can do it so it might be my lack of flexibility…
@@kayakintro Yeah, with 5 damaged discs in the lower back for about 45 years I'm way down on flexibility. Maybe Thursday I can drive again, after one month ban, so I can get a yak wet. Getting withdrawal symptoms. 😢

How many boats do you have 😊? Nice trip..
@@IamNothing82 thanks! Currently I have 4 sea kayaks, 3 surfskis, 1 double sit on top, 1 sup and 1 waveski! In the two last years I had something like 20 kayaks with many sold again.
@@kayakintro hahaha, that's insane and awesome at the same time. When do you use you waveski? Would love to see that. Those are super fun
@@IamNothing82 Excepted for the surfskis they were all second hand and not expensive. My waveski is from the eighties ! It is in good condition but it takes some water. I will fix it and then paddle it in summer. It’s the total opposite of a surfski: with one paddle stroke I can rotate it at 180 degrees 🤣 Because it’s old it is like a surfboard with a seat belt and the straps for the feet. Very unstable.
@@kayakintro you don't have to pay lots of money to have fun and having fun is the most important factor. 😀
@@IamNothing82 The boat in the video is €56 ! I think the best value for money is the V7. I have been up to 23km/h on it, it goes downwind well, is stable and has some storage, and it’s robust! It can do so many things.
Very waves conditions! Looked like a lot of fun
@@Fishaholicboy Yes, I quite like big waves but mostly in summer! It is currently winter here and it’s freezing!! For me anyway but for you it might still be mild as you get some really cold winter there!

@@kayakintro hahaha
Fun.. what was written on the rocks? Was it a monument or something?
@@IamNothing82 It was written Moana something. Moana means sea or big lake. I don’t think this rock was used as a monument. It is just in front of a cliff. If you search for Musick Point on a map and see it in 3D you can see the rocks around. At low tide it’s possible to walk all around. Will do it one day.
