FOGS Queenslander Podcast | Ep 31 Steve Walters
Welcome to the FOGS Queenslander Podcast Episode 31!
In this episode, our host Mark Braybrook is joined by FOG #73 Steve Walters, one of the greatest hookers in Rugby League history. Known as "Boxhead", Steve was a cornerstone of the Canberra Raiders' dominance in the late 1980s and 1990s, playing a pivotal role in the club’s first three premiership victories.
Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Steve’s career was defined by toughness, skill, and leadership. He played 299 first-grade games, the majority with the Canberra Raiders, before finishing his career with the North Queensland Cowboys and Newcastle Knights.
On the representative stage, Steve was a key figure for the Maroons, making 14 State of Origin appearances from 1990 to 1996. He also proudly wore the green and gold of Australia, representing the Kangaroos in 15 international matches. In 1997, he featured in both the Queensland and Australian Super League teams.
In this episode, Steve reflects on his illustrious career, sharing insights from the Raiders' golden era, his time in the Queensland jersey, and what it meant to play alongside legends-including his brothers Kerrod and Kevin Walters.

Incredible to listen to the greats of our game being so humble and not boastful about their obvious abilities. Think some of the modern players could learn from this example
Taught Adrian at Charleville High and played cricket together . Great bloke and great interview. Well done Adrian.
Big Sammy's best 1 line to the ref, (his heads to big sir should be a penalty😂) sammy was so cool to meet in person really down to earth bloke. 👍.
Love Horse & everything Maroon! I'm a girl (older woman now) from SA that moved to VIC in 89 & converted from AFL to NRL 2003 when 1st saw Billy & Storm. My life changed forever! Member of Broncos, Storm & Maroons! I eat & breath NRL all Podcasts, Foxtel, 9 WWOS, UA-cam & regularly give the SEN Sydney 1170 radio crew heaps about the Bloody Blue Roaches! I'd absolutely love this Steeden & be one of my most treasured possessions! Always singin' Aye Aye Yippee Yippee Aye!
FOGs I'd love to hear from. Mark Coyne, Kerry Boustead, Bob Lindner
I could only recall Gavin Allen. I feel so old now
What a legend, Loved watching him represent QLD and Australia when i was growing up -- Queenslander!!!!!

That guy could fly!!
What a great episode!
HODGO! 😁
great produced poddy, very different from the normal cast which is nice, audio levels are a bit off tho
Shane Webcke
The way Mat Rogers presentented himself off and on the field made it easy to love and respect him for the effort he put in to the game. Proud of him for all the representative games for Australia and Queensland and Union. A truly great Ambassador for sport, and shared himself with the public so the dream can stay alive for so many kids.
Willie carne
Would love to hear from the great Matty Singh. I played against him under 14's when he was playing for the Dysart Bulls. I repped Blackwater Devils Juniors at the time
This is an awesome idea love this fogs
What wonderful example of resilience. Really enjoying the great questions, and the honesty.

Because I am a Broncos die hard I just support every maroon player.
I am Broncos and Maroons lover and love Brisbane state a place to be.
Kevin Walters was sacked by the Broncos because he has no eyebrows 😮
If he and sailor hadn’t left league they’d be the greatest wingers ever.
Legend cuz

He was a very good winger when he started out in league, but I don't know anything about his union career or if it was impressive.
Great winger for QLD, cant forget that try he assisted to Locky what a great try! Go QLD
He was a great player, role model for his community in which he lives

Great chat. Brings back memories as a kid when kerrod spoke about putting a hole in the fence. I grew up in milton and lang park was my second home as a kid and lover of rugby league. We used to crawl under the fence where the old church still is. Great days
Api Koroisau Viliami Kikau Matt Burton Steve Crichton Spencer Leniu Kurt Capewell Brent Naden Charlie Staines Jaemon Salmon Jack Cogger That's 10 world-class players lost from the Panthers roster since the 2021 Grand Final...and yet they still keep grinding along. Love him or hate him, it appears that Phil Gould's fingerprints are all over that club from his time there as General Manager from 2012 to 2019. Whatever they paid him, as well as putting up with his personality, was clearly well worth it.
Apparently....shhhhhhhh the young players....didn't like Kev. Renalds brain washed them!!! ..... then who's new coach! His old coach McGuire!!!! Two years in the making!!!!! What confirmed it is Renalds coming out saying he loves Kev! 😂😂😂 that's true but not as a couch!!! You're welcome.
The only surprise with Penrith is how long it's taken for them to dominate the comp. We knew as kids back in the 90s that Penrith had a massive junior development program so it was only a matter of time before this happened...
Exactly. 3 consecutive premierships???!!! Not even the Storm or broncos could do that, but the mighty panthers. You're right bolo!!
Yes gus

Qlder!
You’re not a Queenslander though Ben you’re a Kiwi you never should have suited up for the Maroons and Desecrated that Jersey.
Best prop of the modern Era and I'm a shark fan
So much respect for Pedro. Fierce competitor who had so much success, yet so humble and grounded. Great role model, great person. Well done Pedro.

You hear a number of his contemporaries say he was someone that nobody wanted to come up against.
Legend- loved watching Petro
Absolute legend. Him and pricey are the best prop duo in origin ever for sure
Loved the days when Price and "Petrol Seventy Cents a Litre" were unmatched.
@@nardthe those two were so good. They would completely change the momentum for qld when they would come back on. Especially petrol, he seemed like he would carry 3 blokes with him every tackle win find his front quick play the ball he was so good.
