A bit of adventure on Cape York when we rescue our kids stuck in a crocodile infested creek with only 2 wheel drive available after breaking a front axle / cv joint on the Old Telegraph Track. Taking the caravan to Cape York has been on our trip list for years. We hit the the PDR and all its corrugations, water crossings and dust. In this episode we make it to Lakeland, Coen, Archer River Roadhouse and then on to Bramwell Station. Be sure to watch Part 2 where we take on the Old Tele Track (without the van of course) where things do not go to plan. @vanontheback4419
Cape York Preparation - Towing a Caravan
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 роки тому
We explain how we prepared our off road caravan for a trip to Cape York and a few of the things that went wrong. If you are contemplating taking your van to the most northern point of the Australian mainland don't think anymore, just take it... My preparations worked very nicely and i'm sure helped towards an almost problem free trip.
Wont help with legalities for the rear axle load rating, but definately make it tow better..
@@Retiredroamers yeah every kg makes a difference. I keep the canopy as empty as possible and no fuel Jerry’s or water over rear axle. I move gear from the van to canopy for trips without the van and is a bit of a pain (can’t afford a bigger tow rig yet 😁)
Hey guys, just wondering what your total length from hitch to spare wheel and what is your total caravan weight full of water? Waiting for your next episode to drop, luv them
Hi Justin, our van is 8.5m front to back. Regarding weight, i;ve been very weight conscious and only take what we need. We try and pack light gear right down to cups, plates etc. Fully loaded with 200L of water we are around 3150kgs but i only take 1 tank of water normally.
Great informative video. cheers
Great video. I've been considering ETB canopies as well, so appreciate the info 👍
Thanks Darren, i'm very happy with the canopy so far. We will be doing the big test in Sep and heading across the Simpson Desert, Strezlecki, Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. I'll do another update after but I'm very confident all will be great
Mate, thanks for sharing this. You're a legend!
Great video mate
Doesn't get any clearer than that. Great job with no faff.
'promo sm' 🤔
Any idea what the Bunnings plate with the membrane is called? Tried the bins today to no avail. Cheers.
Hey, this is what i used -DETA White Brush Wall Cover Plate, model no. 6519B
@@vanontheback4419 thanks heaps! Appreciate it. Cheers.
Oooooh I like the look of the $10 doovalackey 🤔😆
$10.40 to be exact :-). DETA White Brush Wall Cover Plate, model no. 6519B
thanks for taking the time to add this one !!!
My pleasure!
G'day How much did you cut off the U bolt and did you have to do it on both sides?
Hey Geoff, apologies for the late reply. If i recall correctly i lined everything up and took measurements from the bottom of the u bolt before i cut. Sorry but cant remember the actual measurement.
Thank you so much .. your explanation of everything was so helpful for this first time caravan owner at 67 years young .. Bit nervous getting out there… cheers
Just do it Benny, you only live once mate :-)
The backing plate has keyhole shaped slots that the unit fits into and slides down to alight the final two mounting screws. Which I cannot get to slide once the backing plate is screwed into the wall.
Did you back off the screws a bit to allow for a little movement in case the screws weren't aligned perfectly?
@@vanontheback4419 No, and thanks for the tip, obvious now you mention it.
You make hard work of it.
Which bit?
Great vid. Just curious what you do with the dust bushes. Thanks.
Hi Phil, which dust bushes are you referring to?
Thanks Dennis. A very comprehensive video of all the preventative maintenance steps we should be doing more often than not. Really glad you showed the handbrake adjustment screw mechanism whilst the drum assembly was removed. Makes it a lot easier to understand what you're doing when adjusting it when it's been reassembled. I guess the only thing better than packing bearings by hand is refilling a grease gun! 🙂
Thanks Anthony. It’s amazing how much difference a brake adjustment makes, not to mention the safety benefits and reduced workload on the tow vehicle.
Should've used brake cleaner or hot water to clean shoes and not air blower
I know Robert, it comes from my mechanical days back in the 80's and I should have learnt from then.... There was asbestos in the brake components and we had no idea of the implications.
@@vanontheback4419 I worked with a guy who instead of using hot water to pour over battery terminals to clean the acid he used the air blower, let's just say we all went running and he thought he wasn't doing anything wrong lol
@@robertstojcevski1098 imagine that smacking you in the eyes. OUCH
@@vanontheback4419 tell me bout it lol
How do you stop water getting into the valves at water crossings
Hi Jason, the valves are sealed and have dust caps so no water can get in.
@@vanontheback4419 thanks, I wondered about that
Great vid mate ... cheers👌 what do you use to protect your pvc pipework underneath? Gotta do the same on my van....
Hi Mate, I used foam insulations that tradies use on water pipes. I've also seen pool noodles being used as well. Good idea if you want to colour code your van :-)
For future reference, there is a great free camp on the way to the dinosaur museum on the left only 5-10 from Winton.
Thanks Darren :-)
Another boring channel
Thanks legend
Where's your channel M8?
Best video I've seen on this. Great presentation. I just got our new (used) van service by a professional. Mobile service and he was only at our place for 45min. Reckons he did all the bearings and brake adjustments. $570. Not bad rates for a brain surgeon. Many years ago I used to do my own on all my old trailers and caravan and will go back to doing it so great to get tips from you.
Thanks Damian. Mmmmmm 45 minutes would hardly cover the time for a basic inspection let alone a complete service imo. I always carry spare bearings and seals when travelling as well as all all the tools for any situation. Cheers Denis
What a beautiful part of the country!
It certainly is and we will be back there
Great video, Air bag guys should follow you, Why have 2 air valves? If 1 leaks won"t car be lop sided? I remember in young days with pump up shockers on the HR there was only 1 valve for even lift, My semi trailer air bags only have 1 auto adjuster controlling all air bags for same equal ride height and same pressure. Your thoughts?
Hey Bullbar, my understanding is that if only 1 valve is fitted then the air will flow from one to the other which may result in a "tipping" effect. ie going around a corner or over rough terrain, the air from the pressurised side will move to less pressurised side and create more lift which is not ideal. Maybe your truck has some type of valve to stop this happening. That's my understanding but have been wrong before haha
Good vid mate. I lived in Ravens hoe for a few years when my wife got transferred to teach up there
Thanks Dicko, we’ll spend more time up there exploring next time
Great video guys good to see you out and about again
Thanks Lyndon, how’s your photography journey going? You are creating some great content mate.
Great info. Have you ever considered fitting a Oz Glide hitch? They are a bit pricey, but would be interested in your thoughts. Cheers
Hey Michael, i haven't used one but i will definitely do some research
Love the back yard
Thank you!!!
Great video mate. Thanks. Regarding the Fire Extinguisher, just give them a shake each time as well as the powder settles on one side and if left can cause it not to work 👍
Thanks @1000adstar I’ll definitely be doing that and thanks for the tip 👍
Fantastic video I'm heading up sept 2024 great inspiration. 😊
Well done, worth watching.
Is it worth the drive out there … doesn’t look much different to any other part of the cape York which is easier to access
It sure is worth the drive. Great place to hang out for a few days or so.
You did great xxx
Great & informative video Mate I’m buying your van 👍👍
Reckon it could be ceiling mounted?
Im fairly sure they can Jesse as they move 360deg
@@thesaladtable4446 Beauty, I'll give it a go!
Just use some nitrile gloves mate! 😆👍
Could you convert this to a plug in somehow. What would you use?
I've seen others use a cig plug with success Debbie
Better instructor than the Air bag Guys.... Thanks heaps mate..... Really helped me out..... 👍🍻🥃
Thanks Paul :-)
Cruisemaster suspension also have grease points on the swing arms. They need doing regularly. Very good clear video. Thank you
Nice hat in the .bloopers mate 🙂👍
We’ll picked up mate. I keep both a tan and a green one in the van. They’ve seen the world and now it’s time they spend some time in our own backyard 😁
Appreciate the instal, I'me going for it today!
How'd you go with the install Teanncoffee?
@@thesaladtable4446 Fine! We chose to instal on cutting board so we could move it around.
Great comprehensive video. The only thing that I would add is to check the emergency breakaway switch for the brakes. This is often overlooked and I have had two fail to work when tested. Easy enough to check while the wheels are in the air by just pulling the emergency cable out then trying to turn the wheels. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
Great tip Desparky, thanks for sharing
Karen was (n’t) impressed huh
What’s your thoughts on carrying spare shocks if doing corrugated roads. I’ve heard they can heat up and fail. Probably also carry spare bearings?
Hi Obs, I carry spare bearings but not shocks. I have 2 on each wheel 😁
Regarding the high cost Tetford cleaner. One inexpensive tip. Use dishwasher tablet. Dissolve in slightly warm water apply as needed wait and flush. Done 🙂
I'm just about to do the bearings on my van, your video will be a great help. Thanks. We are preparing for a 3 month trip which is starting in July, including Cape York. Looking forward to viewing your video on that. Cheers 👍
Great video, well presented and comprehensive. I am sure you did it but I would do quick wheel hubs feel for any elevated temperature after having adjusted the brakes.
Awesome install vid mate! 👌🏽
Thanks (awesome name) 🙂
