surah luqman Listening to songs is prohibited (harăm) due to the saying of Allah: وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشُتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمِ وَيَتَّخْذَهَا هُزْوَا أُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ - 31:6 "And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead others from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." (Luqman: 6) The "amusement of speech' is singing as was explained by a group of the Sahäbah such as Ibn Mas'üd (radiyallahu 'anhu). 667 "Abu Hanifa forbids 'listening to all musical instruments, all types of tambourines, hand drums, and even the striking of sticks." Shihäb ad-Din al-Älüsi al-Baghdādi Imam Abu Hanifa said that listening to music and singing (ghina') that distracts from religious obligations or promotes immoral behavior is impermissible. Reference: Quoted in Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar by Imam al-Tahawi, Volume 4, Page 222. From Hanafi Figh Books Al-Hidayah by Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani: "Listening to music and musical instruments is haram because it distracts the heart and creates negligence towards Allah." "Never do the love of song (music) and the love of Quran come together in a person's heart except that one expels the other." (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3/451) azid ib AlWalid رهم ال said "O sons of Umayyah, beaware of music, for it diminishes modesty, increases lust and destroys manhood!"
