Nuclear Deterrence: Guarantee of or Threat to our Security?
With the increased tensions and re-appearance of war in Europe, the term "nuclear deterrence“ is heard more often in the public discourse. The theory of nuclear deterrence was developed by the American economist Thomas C. Schelling in the bipolar world of the 1950s as a zero-sum game. It is based on the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and presumes that an opposing nuclear armed state would not use nuclear weapons in view of the potential huge damage to itself by a counterstrike.
