"A teacher must not cowardly rest on the bed of authority, imposing their teachings as unchangeable, their example as untouchable, and their way of feeling as a standard for others. Instead, the teacher should awaken the student’s own consciousness, fostering independent thought and feeling. They should encourage the student to critically examine the teachings and examples given, and thus elevate them to autonomous thinking, to spiritual freedom. This is the task everywhere, but nowhere more so than in art, where ultimately, personality is decisive, and the greatest value of the work depends on the freedom and originality of the artist's personality. A character that is not free can only ever be a servant in the arts; they may wear a richly adorned uniform, they may become a court pianist, and many other things, but they will never be an artist, nor will they find spiritual fulfillment in art." Adolf Bernhard Marx

Thank you! Lovely piece. I was not familiar with it.
Thank you! Yes, it’s strangely quite unknown, but brilliant.
There is a version by Glenn Gould that is even slower than mine.
Sehr schöne Musik, danke!!
Vielen Dank!
Danke

I don’t know why a beat of around 40 or 50 works best for Bach. A poetic, lyrical beauty comes up that feels rushed if played faster than that. And seeing the art and architecture, his own writings, at least his famous one for the Margrave, and the cantabile aspect of the music, sought-for in this particular collection, makes me believe it was closer to this than not.
In a time of so much formality, of a kind of sacred choreography of life, any faster is ridiculous. We want to make these people as postmodern constructs as we are? Don’t think so,
Thank you!
Yes! The cantable thing! A mechanical playing when practically no machines existed? But when voice was instantaneously associated with keyboard playing? Give me “slow” (in truth, common-sense) Bach any day and I’m in.
The one I like the most. ua-cam.com/video/nKIP8gsAM_Q/v-deo.html
The speed I like. Maybe a little faster I prefer, but the range is there. Czerny in whole beat was, to me, wrong (Marx I’m sure was thinking in this one when he objected Carl’s edition). In any case, apparently C and ₵ were interchangeable in the Inventions editions; so a melody to me in 16ths tells me it should be slower than what Czerny said, as a weighty alla breve, which by use of the 16ths halves the tempo, for pure alla breve is just 8ths. Thank you; beautiful playing.
Thanks for the comment! I find it a bit slow too, but when I have to play the same E-flat with the left hand and then the right, plus an ornament, my instrument doesn’t respond well at a faster speed. 1:32 With two manuals, I could probably play it a bit quicker. It’s really a matter of practical limitations too. But, I don’t strictly follow Czerny’s tempo markings, since he added them almost a hundred years after Bach wrote the pieces. I use them as a reference, of course, but I have reasons to believe that even by Czerny’s time, they were already playing it faster than they would have in 1723. I prefer, of course, Czerny’s tempo over what's done today in most cases, but I imagine Bach conceived it slower than Czerny or Beethoven played it. I recommend this video of mine. Thanks again! ua-cam.com/video/JmRcTcWFtUQ/v-deo.html
@@LangLangsam Eggs-actly! Schweitzer also said that Bach is better slower, while giving preposterous metronome speeds (which to me points to whole beat). And I also think that: they already played Bach way too fast at the XIXth. The same that has happened from the XIXth to today. The mechanical action of moving the fingers will naturally try to move faster in repeating itself through time. The polyphony is better slow! And some source by JG Walther also says that when no Italian indication is given, we must assume an adagio. It’s a common sense, aesthetic perception thing: to write all those details and still playing it faster? Don’t think so. So interesting to note that the harpsichord won’t respond well when too fast. I totally understand “where you are coming from”. And not because someone wrote something, but just because simply it all sounds naturally better (which explains also Bach’s lack of obligation to write a tempo word. And why music existed without an exacting measurement of time during centuries)
@@LangLangsam also explains why you have this many subscribers in less than a year. And yes, two-manual tools are necessary to revive. This one is a good example. Congratulations!
Thanks! I'm glad you prefer the music played slower than usual. Still, Lang Lang has way more subscribers than me, and he plays super fast! 🙂
@@LangLangsam There is something counter-productive and counter-intuitive, and, most importantly, fun-killing, in composing for many voices only to play them too fast! Any number like yours in classical is a success to me! People like this, but all the conventions make it difficult to admit it to ourselves.
Sounds different from what I've heard before. I guess it's because of the tempo. Doesn't run away from my thoughts. I like it! Keep going, it's a great experience to listen to your play.
Thank you for the comment! When you hear it slower than usual, you can really focus on the musical ideas and pick up on the details instead of just noticing the speed of the performer's fingers. I'm glad you like it!
❤ from india 🇮🇳 keep adding such great music

Great music on this lovely autumn day! Thanks so much. Name of instrument maker please.❤

Where does that lovely Adolf Bernhard Marx quote in your channel description come from?
It is a quote from his book The Music of the Nineteenth Century and Its Culture. The System of Musical Instruction. I read it in the review that Franz Liszt wrote about the book. Therefore, I don't actually know on which page of A. B. Marx's book it can be found.

Vielen Dank!
Danke!
Nice and lovely variation! What temperament is your intrument tuned to? I'm a layman.
Thank you! I don't use any special temperament. I tune the instrument about three times a week and just try to make it sound the way I like.
This performance was beautiful. I'm not criticizing, but prefer to play it a little bit faster myself. Having said that though, this is so refreshing vs all the speed demons who perform this piece in about 50 seconds or less. They seem to think whoever plays it the fastest wins. Those turbo versions lack the musicality that your performance clearly has. Bravo.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the performance. I strive to play at a tempo that allows for a full understanding of the musical content, and knowing that this was reflected in the performance brings me great satisfaction. Thanks again for your comment!
Very musical! I enjoyed your performance very much!
Thank you! I am glad you liked it
I'm enjoying this series. Lovely harpsichord! I've played several of these tese myself... nice simple playing

Thank you!
I’m always used to hearing this played at a fast tempo but hearing it slowed brings a whole new meaning to it ❤
I'm glad to hear that. I experience the same way.
Excelente!!!
Gracias!
Is that a lautenwerk or a clavichord?
It’s the lute stop of a Neupert harpsichord, Telemann model.
It's so hard to get the melody to sing in the LH on the harpsichord, isn't it? Makes the piano look so much easier. You're doing a great job. May I ask - is your chair high enough? You look a few cms (couple of inches) low to me. At least try it, if you can (if they still exist, sit on a phone book, but a big one, or some books). Again, some beautiful passages in the LH. Yes, the RH is lovely, too, but that first re-statement of the theme in the LH is very important, and you do it so well.
Thank you! I'll try the book suggestion, although I feel like I'm sitting too high. Sometimes I have to hunch over to get my head closer to the instrument. Thanks for the feedback. I invite you to listen to my new video today. Best regards!

What aspect of my performance makes you think it needs more practice?
@@LangLangsam your expression
If you had mentioned the tempo, I would have had something to say, but to this, I’m not sure how to respond. Except maybe that, yes, you can always practice to give the impression that you've practiced a lot. And, of course, you can always practice more too.
