wow that mauboussin is sure a looker!
excellent. thumbs up!
Thank you, sir! Glad you enjoyed.
Beautiful story about free flight. (and so true)
You never get to old for model airplanes. My self: Jet engine mechanic, have flown real gliders and Hanglider, have some hours on small planes, have my own Microlight. And work on real WW2 Spitfire and Mustang at the local airport. And still fly RC and FF planes!
You’re absolutely right, of course! Thanks very much for sharing.
Think you may regret (?) no DT on Skokie. Looks quite thermal capable 😂. Gonna be test flying my mine this weekend so thanks for the help inspiration
You may be right. I had a flight of just over 3 minutes a couple of days ago. Good luck flying yours!
So I said so long to my Skokie on Sunday. Thought I had lit the fuse but no and it was last seen crossing over the chattohochee river on its way to model plane nirvana at 4 min 37 seconds
@@jamesmartin3360ah, geez, sorry to hear that. I feel your pain.
how magic
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
So peaceful. Well done! By the way, 4x1/8"x10g in the GR6 will give you 1800-1900 turns reliably. With that little prop it'll be a speck high in the sky too. I never determined ultimate still air potential for that plane but it was over 3 minutes.
Thanks for the information! I’ll give that a try and see what happens.🙂
Man, you got some beautiful flights in. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for stopping by! Much appreciated.
Thanks for posting , much enjoyed!
Thank you, sir. Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful! Free flight forever!
@@baptistapereira7210 Forever indeed! Thank you!
I must learn to get mine to fly like that😂
You will! I’m sure of it!
A great video with a familiar story! I built FF and rockets as a young fella, then again when my youngest took an interest, now I am working on another round with the grands.
Same thing just happened to me. A ghost from 50 years ago appeared, a Comet Sparky kit. Never did I ever think I would ever have Sparky back but she's back better then ever! Thanks for the great vid.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
Flys great! Could you give me some information on the size of motor to start with on this model, thanks.
Thanks! I started with a single loop of 3/16" FAI Tan SuperSport II rubber at about 2x hook-to-peg length (about 20" long). I later stepped the rubber cross-section up to 7/32" (1 loop of 1/8" rubber combined with 1 loop of 3/32" rubber). I had also recently learned to braid motors, so I was able to increase the motor length to 3x hook-to-peg (30"). That proved to be the right recipe for my model. Hope this helps.
@@2degreesright-thrust830 thanks so much !
@@2degreesright-thrust830 Adding rubber may shift the CG. One thing to keep in mind about models of that period is that they used wood propellers. They also had long noses. We now use plastic propellers which are heavier. That may require more rubber, both to power the extra weight and meet the CG requirement.
I met Joe Konefes once, at the Nats, early 80s.
Sounds like a great memory. Thanks for sharing!
Nice model! 🙂
Thank you!!
I’m glad I came across your video. I am just putting the finishing touches on my Baby Commercial. My last free flight model was over 20 years ago. I flew RC for many years but free flight is the most rewarding. I am all in. Question for you. I haven’t explored the motor power yet. The plans have some info but if I remember correctly it was a bit vague. What did you use for a motor after learning it was underpowered? Thanks for the video!
If it’s not too much trouble, I would be grateful to learn what you ended up using for the motor?
Welcome! I’m glad you found the video as well. Yes, the motor suggested by the kit would only be adequate if your model is super lightweight. This was my first model ever, so it was probably a bit on the heavy side, but still in the average range, I think. What I ended up with was a loop of 1/8” and a loop of 3/32”, braided. This really brought the model to life.
Thanks for the great video 😁The Phantom Flash will be the first competition with FAC rules in Switzerland this summer. I am currently building two Phantom Flashs and am looking forward to handing over the models to their element for the first time soon.
That’s wonderful! Looking forward to seeing some video.

That’s a beautiful way of looking at it.
You're having too much fun with your videos. Love the edit. An entertaining free flight video!
Thanks, John! Guilty as charged. I’m enjoying making videos quite a bit.
Keep'em coming!
You are doing a great job with these videos! Very nice plane too! I am cleaning up my shop as the clutter destroyed mine when clutter fell on it. I need a PF box! Easy to wreck them. George Perryman had one that would do 4 minutes indoors. I saw it flying on my first visit to see what FF was all about. I was stunned! I thought, “ I don’t know who this old boy is, but he is a Master! “. I joined the club!
Thank you, sir! Yes, they’re incredibly fragile. I’ll be very surprised if my new one makes it to the end of the upcoming season.
I need to build another one. First one fell victim to a hangar accident, though it never flew well anyway.
They’re so fragile. Handling one is a challenge in itself. And they can be so sensitive to the smallest adjustments. If you decide to try another, I’m sure it’ll go better for you.
I'm very pleased to have "found" your channel. i have been flying electric (E Flight) for a couple of years. never seen these planes ! wow ! Thank you for all the awesome links.... Today I received My January 2024 AMA. The cover and article is fantastic ! Spot lighting these balsa planes. Keep up the good work Sir. Danny. Crosby, Texas.
Welcome! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. The gentleman in the cover shot is a good friend of mine. He’s been an active hobbyist since he was a kid. The knowledge base in this hobby is vast, and people are always ready to help. It’s pretty special.
Impressive ! keep up the great work, Sir.👍
Thank you!
Thank you for the New Inspiration. I see a Prairie Bird in my future. God Bless. Edit:..... wow ! look at the January 2024 AMA Cover and awesome write-up starts on page 20. 2 Thumbs Up !
It’s a great article. The hobby needs all the awareness and recognition it can get. Tom Hallman really does so much for the hobby. It’s great to see.
Great story. Build/Fly Today. We're not promised tomorrow. Keep up the good work !
You’re absolutely right! Thank you, sir.
I built a Prairy Bird and it only flew once. By its direction when it hit a boomer thermal, I'm pretty sure it landed somewhere in France.
It’s very possible!
You have captured the essence of free flight with this wonderful video! Thanks for posting. I have been building for many years, am unable to chase anymore. I fly rc now, but still build stick and tissue models to keep my fingers working. Keep making these videos, please, they bring back so many wonderful memories.
Erick, thank you so much. That’s very kind. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Wonderful video! See you at Muncie!
Thank you, sir! Looking forward to it.
Ďakujem...
Great story. I found out I live near Wawa back in '19. My friend Ian said, here use this 10gr 10 strand, 1/16" motor. We all watched my Cloud Tramp fly up and downwind, and away. That was about two years back. We all laughed.
Thanks! Would be great to have a flying field like that nearby. My Cloud Tramp broke in several places before I could get it trimmed. I chose wood that was too soft for the fuse stick. Have to try another one.
@@2degreesright-thrust830 I started with 6# wood for the stick and it bent from motor tension, deflecting the tailplane down, plane would not climb. 8# wood is working well.
Thanks for the tip! Going to replace the motor stick and try again at some point.
Oh man! ❤ Have ALMOST pulled the trigger on getting this one twice. Have a feeling that the next time I dare go to that site, it ends up in my cart. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks for stopping by! You can’t go wrong with this one. It’s so good natured. It’s probably the most reliable and consistent flyer I’ve built to date.
Really nice work! The video kept me engaged all the way through, also.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that.
Just beautiful! I loved the graphic, artistic design of the video too.
Thanks so much! Very kind words.
It's a good looking design. I enjoyed your historical video of the Zephyr saga.
Thank you, John! I appreciate that. Thanks for checking it out.🙂
splendid!
Thank you!
Nice!!!
Thank you!
Less tech and more fun. Well done, what a great little flyer. And greetings from an Aussie in Thailand where there are no competitions like that, and no RCers to fly with. Enjoy it there!
Greetings to you as well! Hope you can get to Oz or somewhere else at some point to get your free flight fix.
Beautiful! Free flight forever!
Thank you! Agreed!
This plane is a great flyer! Greetings from Devon UK. Cheers, Marc

Thanks for this. I've been in the hobby for 55 years now and it never gets old. I miss summer the minute our final outdoor contest concludes each year and this made it even worse. But in a good way.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m right there with you. Winter seems to slog on forever here in Michigan. Making videos like this helps me to make the transition out of the flying season.
fantastic!!
Thanks very much!
spectacular!
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Great video Ken. A looks to be a great flying model as well!
Thanks, John! The design flies. The only thing holding the prototype back a bit is excess weight. The second example will be lighter.🙂
Nice!
I was wondering how you select the size of the propeller for your models-- Thank -you -- Steve
Hi, Steve. There are a whole host of factors that can affect the size and pitch of the prop you choose to go with on a given model, but the shortest and simplest answer is that prop diameter will need to be at least 1/3 of the wingspan. If there are no limitations in place (such as rules for a particular event, etc), a better guideline is 40% of the wingspan. Still better, without getting too complicated, is a diameter that equals anywhere from 1 to 1.5 times the square root of the wing area, depending on things like prop pitch.
thanks @@2degreesright-thrust830
Very nice job! Well done!
Many thanks! I appreciate it.
Beautiful! But I'm not seeing a DT..... 🤥
Haha, it’s there, and it does work! It’s a pop-up wing setup (with a viscous timer). Couldn’t see a way to do a pop-up tail on this one because of the tail design. You’re right, though, I wasn’t using the DT on these flights.
@@2degreesright-thrust830 OK, glad to hear that. She's gonna be a winner for you! JK
