I really like the sound of a starting DSSI hard drive in a VAX 4000/300 :)
But didn’t SCSI interface to connect an external CDROM :( only I had ASYNC Multiplexor card
Today I’ll try to boot from network using another VAX machine adding this to cluster. But I need figureout how to install software over ethernet.
Also I need to check all PSU capacitors because some times not power up well.
@@tomeucapo The capacitors on the secondary side are sometimes difficult to reach, I haven't managed to replace them all myself and sometimes my machine switches off as well. I think I have make a fourth of my PSU video series...
@@DECcomputers I reached and removed. All 100uF electrolithic caps fluid are leaked! First I clean it and replaced all this caps :P
I think the VAX 4000 is one of the nicest VAX models to run at home - lots of expansion but still runs on household current. Plus the enclosure just looks cool!
First I removed battery pack and added new working DSSI SCSI Hard Disk. Now I’ll try to re-install VMS 7.0 or 6.3
Indeed, too slow installation process. But not too slow I used other type of installation media like tapes are very slow than floppies at 90s
I kind of miss how slow floppy drives were - they gave you time to sit and think, or talk to someone while the OS installed.
70MHz not 17MHz!!
Yes Its 70MHz I’m so sorry! damn dyslexia.
Nice review - thanks!
Another case of a guy with the baddest english in the world thinking he could teach on YT. *sigh*
So sorry! Another case of non-english person try to spend his time to create some content videos in English on his spare time to share his experiences! If you don’t understand the video simply not follow me! Thanks and sorry! I try to learn how to improve speak English. I do the effort for english people. Another time I’m so sorry! Maybe made my next video in Catalan, maybe understand better. Or its better do rm -rf / on my UA-cam Account? Maybe you prefer the second. 😂
The problem with the small close cross ❌ can be solved by using a touch pen
Ahh yes, thats it!
Your 4052A looks great!
Thanks to you! :)
Screen flickering is insane
Yes, is horrible frequency refresh rate! I'm sorry
Did you see the new Enhanced UI for the DHO800/900? It allows you to put the channels in full screen mode.

Resolution on big monitor 1024*800 or higher?
Tested on my 4K flat panel, but in 4K monitor scale image. Resolution 1024x600
Pascal was one of my favorite languages, i started out on c64 but when family got IBM i copied Turbo Pascal diskettes from school to use at home, although i moved onto C/C++ and finally C#. I'm actually working on Pascal language for .NET as hobby project. Later versions of MS-DOS Borland came out with Turbo Pascal with TVision UI, I had fell in love with it
Me too, when starting to tinkering with PCs get copy of Turbo Pascal 3 and start to learn Pascal :) I remember my fathers have some copies of Turbo C, Turbo Pascal but he never use.
Very interesting, I have no clue what any of this is that you are typing. The ONLY programming I know anything about is BASIC, I've never had an opportunity to learn any other kind of programming.
When I was child starts with BASIC of course. My first programming language was BASIC in many forms and types: VIC20 BASIC, GW-BASIC, QuickBasic, Turbo Basic… Lovely days ;) Also in PC days are using Turbo Pascal and Turbo C, also Assembler too for example combining Assembler code into BASIC programs to make some special screen text effects like scroll up and down screen.
Wrote a lot of code using these tools as an undergraduate student (once upon a time). LOL
Me too. When I was undergraduate student and before in high school start to learn Pascal with Turbo Pascan and C with Turbo C. :)
could you talk a little louder
Of course, I’m so sorry I need better microphone :)

I would love to see this with a big ext monitor
You can connect with HDMI. Can make a video doing this.
Thank you for the review
My pleasure!
I bought one and now have to learn how to use it so any videos performing tests would be helpful.
Also I still learn about new functionalities. I try to prepare the next video about LXI and network remote managenent of scope.
The serial decode. Can it decode for example a radio burst from a wireless outdoor thermometer?
DHO 804 can decode different bus types: Serial and Parallel. In serial mode supports RS232, I2C and SPI. If you system use this type of buses thats OK can decode it. Wireless outdoor thermometer not wired, maybe you cannot decode it. For example if thermometer sensor connected with I2C wired bus, then you can decode dialog. For your situation maybe not.

Thanks for posting your thoughts on the scope, looks like it is loaded with features so I can understand the need for a touch screen since it would take a lot of knobs and buttons to access all of them. I particularly like the compact size which allows it to be used on a normal size workbench. I have an old one that is so big I have it on a stand I can pull up beside my bench since if I put it on the bench, I wouldn't have any room for anything else. Cheers!
I think about touch screen and UI buttons like close window button is little than finger and some times when I try close window UI not response very well. But in general is very versatile scope for this price. In general not bad oscilloscope quality/price relation not bad, usability not bad. Maybe need improve some UI elements for better usability with touch screen. Also is my first RIGOL oscilloscope with touch screen and some functions accessed from Rigol start button or menu button instead direct access buttons like SIGLENT or Tek scopes than have screen lateral direct buttons to access measurement functions or other menu functions. Thanks for your comment! Cheers!
Oh my! It's so nice to see all these old developer tools in action. I really love installing and trying them out myself on VMs and DOSBox. I found Visual C++ 6 very interesting since it's apparently still used by some people to maintain old projects and is the last version of VC++ before they went with naming them by year. Maybe a good idea for a next video, it looks different enough :O
Thanks good idea. In my job we using Visual Studio 2022 with C++ its totally different but still also compatible with old Windows APIs. I make this video because when was more young (1995) buy Microsoft Developer Tools for Students and my first contact with VB5 and VC++4. Before than I used other MS Tools and Compilers like Microsoft Quick Basic and Microsoft Basic Professional Developer System. In these days I used also lot of Borland compilers like Turbo Pascal and Turbo C for DOS.
Is there a significant difference between Turbo and Borland versions of Pascal ?
What do you mean?
@@tomeucapo "the name Borland Pascal was generally reserved for the high end packages (with more libraries and standard library source code) while the original cheap and widely known version was sold as Turbo Pascal." end of quote. But I wanted more gory technical details about it... I guess I'll have to google it :))
Hi! yes TP7 and BP7 are different products. BP7 From WinWold: "It includes both the DOS IDE and compiler as well as the Windows IDE from Turbo Pascal For Windows"
Always I used Turbo’s products from Borland but never used Borland Pascal for Windows. In the past I started with Turbo Pascal 3 and later v6 but in windows jumped to Delphi and Microsoft Visual C++ but never used Borland Pascal for Windows in the past. I reviwed Borland C++ in other video to quick review (not in depth) how it works on windows.
From Wikipedia: For versions 6 and 7 (the last two versions), both a lower-priced Turbo Pascal and more expensive Borland Pascal were produced; Borland Pascal was oriented more toward professional software development, with more libraries and standard library source code. The name Borland Pascal is also used more generically for Borland's dialect of the language Pascal, significantly different from Standard Pascal.
Since you are using a commodore keyboard, can it be made to fit in a VIC-20 case?
Maybe, but this is C64C keyboard
It should fit as the VIC-20 and the C64 and c64c use the same keyboard. VIC-20 case is the biggest.
@@G7VFY I know it, thanks. I try to find one VIC20 case at ebay to fit my board into it!

With Apple II+Z80 Softcard? Or other machine?

Did turbo pascal have extended DOS memory support ?
Turbo Pascal doesn’t support Extended Memory. But since Borland C++ and Borland Pascal have new targets can support this. You can try Borland Pascal 7 instead Turbo Pascal.
@@tomeucapo thanks, I'll try BP7

There is literally not a single good video online to show examples of VS Macro use.
Is not VS Macro, is MS Macro Assembler for 8086 for DOS! if i wanted to use modern assembler with VS i would have used VS!
Can you provide the source code?
Yes, don't worry I try to upload to my github repo: github.com/tomeucapo/DOSStuff
@@tomeucapo thank you so much sir! That really helped me a lot
@@ZeroCool2211 One note! The Box function not implemented yet, this function used to draw box arround the menubar.
I did some HP41C scientific calculator and then Sinclair ZX81 BASIC programming before I started my Math studies at Leipzig University in 1986 - and we had Turbo Pascal as part of the curriculum for "real and serious programming" - then still on 8bit CP/M east German robotron PC1715 machines - 64 Kilobyte - two diskettes - amber screen. Nice memories. After all these years I still remember the ^KB ... ^KK sequences ... While back then we didn't take Turbo Pascal very serious and went for some really big such as C - the Borland IDE was actually very practical: - quick application development - small memory footprint - one can even dynamically load modules into memory (no real linker though) - compact and easy to learn language - compiler finds most of errors (as demonstrated in the video 🙂 ) - dynamic memory structures (without the pointer hassle,C brought with it) So it is a shame that they went out of business so quickly. Visual Basic was a mess compared to Turbo Pascal.
In my childhood my father buys first computer (Rockwell AIM 65) and then ZX81 with 16 KB of RAM. But the one that I really touched and learned my first steps with BASIC was with a VIC20, then came Dragon 32 and then a CPC6128. I rembember when learn with Turbo Pascal 3, my first structured programming language was learn. You were the most beautiful years of my childhood, I have to thank my father for introducing me to that world that in the end has been the specialty with which I work on a day-to-day basis, software developer and engineer.
@@tomeucapo >>I have to thank my father for introducing me to that world << That's what we have in common 🙂
LOL back in the 80's made a living with QuickBasic, Turbo Pascal, and Base... Ah to have those days back...
I remember also these days but in my case at 90s!
HEHEHE ... I was a geek during the 80's i had forgotten about the QuickBasic ..thanks for the memories
At the same time that I was tinkering with Turbo Pascal, migrate my old GWBasic first programs to QuickBasic 3 and later 4.5 my experimental little programs like as file encryptor or litte inventory management with sequential files, good times!
I also learned programming using Borland products ..Turbo Assambler ,Turbo pascal .. The funny thing is that back then a PC was so expensive ..I could not afford an IBM PC ..so i wanted badly a computer ..Some one offered me an ATARI ST .new for cheap ..I bought it ..And this was a great idea .. I discovered that i could use a PC emulator and run DOS ..and then run turbo pascal and others .. So i had a PC running very close to the native PC speed .Then i discovered that there was a Macintosh emulator ..Now with my Atari i could run graphical publishing soft at a faster speed than a real Mac( it uses the same CPU).. To top it all up ..I discovered that there Minix was available for ATARI ,so i could run a Unix clone .In those days ..there was only ATT Unix .and it only run later on 286 machines or 386 machines .. So i learned Unix scripts in my old Atari ..... This is my Atari and I story,, we had a nice life and lived happy ever after !
Awesome! When was young start learing another languages like Pascal and C, I began with Borland accidentaly, my fathers have some copies of Turbo C and Turbo Pascal that never he used that and give, install and learn to use. I remember in these days without internet (early 90s), learn by examples into journals like as PC Magazine or Byte. Very interesting age before I start my career at university as Engineer. At the end of 1995 buy first Linux spanish journal that sells with copy of Slackware Linux, remember create to floppies (boot and root) and installl manually on my old 486 DX2 at 66MHz (remember dificulties with configure XWindow manually with XF86config). I known Minix when was university student in Operating Systems course that show how implements OSs like Unix showing how it works Minix (Tannembaum OS).
All you just mention ,was my world too. Xconfig86 server ( so many options) .Then one worked with your card by magic .A friend of mine sold early Linux booklets with a CS and a boot floppy disk ..Then came FreeBSD ..we used to leave the computer running for weeks .No crashes .That was impressive back then
