Several years ago, before 66 became a tourist event vie a road from Chicago to LA, people who travelled it did so in a hurry. The idea was to get on it, hit your mark, and get off it. Nostalgia wasn't a commodity then, just time, gas, food and a bed to sleep on. To anyone who did the road, made the ride back then it's sure strange to see it in its current state. Already broken down and falling apart by the 70s, Seligman was facing the end. Road traffic was gone. Attempts to develop tourist based local business failed. People were leaving the place, for good. Without jobs, an economy to support the people, or any hope for a change Juan turned to the only thing he knew: Route 66. The rest is well known history. But, the Road is now a tourist trap. Known for its well developed sense of tacky even during its heyday, it now is covered with the usual things people think have some connection to it. The 50s, for example, have nothing to do with Route 66. Icons like Elvis, Hoosier guy James Dean and even Ms. Monroe have nothing to do with it. However, Elvis did travel it often between LA, Vegas and his home in Memphis. Various hotels and diners along the way where he and the assorted Memphis Mafias stopped to eat and sleep are still around. James Dean admitted he stayed several times along the road enroute from Indiana or New York to Hollywood. He is even known to have tested a few cars speed limits on it. Monroe, no record of her ever being on it. Route 66 was road. It moved people thru space. Not thru time, as it tries to do now. A recent study showed that the Route, granted some new businesses moving to it in a few locations, such as Tulsa, Oklahoma or Flagstaff, Arizona for the most is back in decline again. The tourist market appears to have hits its high point and is going back down. Local shops and places are having a hard time staying open or raising capital to open. Some places, such as here in Seligman, have seen a fall in business overall but experience peaks in the winter and mid-summer. However, the rest of the time it's fairly slow. States have been holding back grants and other funds to create tourist buzz and promotions. Illinois recently had to stop funding a campaign to promote the route to residents within the state. Illinois has a well established and organized Route 66 cadre and supporters. The state Route 66 Association has managed to stay at it for over 20 years and is active in promoting the Route and in taking on restoration projects which project iconic places and areas along the road. As do the other states it hosts probably the best no-thrills 66 museum, helped along the way by historic research from association members past and present. It sponsors a fairly popular annual 66 road rally that features areas in the state and highlights its place in current Illinois lifestyle. For a fair price you can tag along, enjoy some good comrades and food and stay in a hotel along the road. It tries to feature historic places still in business. Roamin Rich, a current day You Tube blog level promoter of all things-66, features well done gems on off the beaten path and on the beaten path. All are interesting and attract viewers from around the world. Although vicarious thrills and 'Route Porn' attract many most want to see the road and its places to get an idea of what to do on it. OR where to go. Rich has a direct and low key approach to his passion. To him, the Route is much more than a road. He's made communicating it to the rest of us a large part of his life. Fans are lucky to have guys like him taking time to give us a strong view of the road.

Love this place i was on a trek with TrekAmerica and we went to Seligman, nothing like anything you would see in the UK.

I wonder why the sign at the Seligman Cemetary says grant them Eternel Rest instead of eternal rest?

Osee Anderson used to play pretty often at the First National Bar in Pocatello, Idaho around 1995-1996. So often, that he even rented a room upstairs at the Monarch hotel where I lived. He could cajole sounds out of a guitar like I've never heard.
