Beethoven : Fifth Piano Concerto in E-flat, op.73, 'Emperor' Nikita Magaloff, piano Wiener Symphoniker, Willem van Otterloo True, this isn't exactly 'unheard' Beethoven, but one shouldn't be too dogmatic in these matters. And it is a very fine performance by any standard !

Dieskau has the total commitment to the poetry and the music: his German is naturally fabulous as is his role play: every nuance lived in the most intimate expressiveness. There are great singers who avoid the Beethoven Lieder genre because the songs are uniquely difficult.’Schubert hands the poetry to them on a plate. He of course knew all the Beethoven Songs through to opus 98

I first heard Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the 1950s, and wish today that I'd been able to appreciate him more. Hope I make up now for my ignorant adolescence! Love listening to him again. Thank you so much.

These are surely my favourite Beethoven variations, along with the Eroica Variations. Just from first hearing, the unique harmonies of the theme stand out in each variation so clearly yet refreshingly; it stands, in my eyes, far above the Diabelli Variations, in which I can hardly spot the original theme after many listens in front of the score, let alone at first listen from audio only (as it is supposed to be ingested). My favourite variations are XII and XXVI, by the way.
