Upcycling an old lamp to deal with solder fumes
I’ve finally had it! It's time to complete some projects that have been on the to-do list for too long. In this one-day build, I upcycle some old lamp parts I've collected over the years and use them to create a tabletop fume extractor for soldering.

You should have run the wires through one of the goosenecks. I just use a small desk fan. Cheap and simple. I learned a trick years ago, if you have a riser on the workbench put the fan on top pointing up and towards you. It creates a nine gentle draft that draws the smoke up and away from your face and throws it behind you.
Use a car HEPA filter, they do a much better job at filtering the smoke. I made a (much crappier) fume extractor using one, but it does a better job at filtering the smoke.
Well it isn't exstracting anything, it just dilutes it into the air faster, still for you to breathe in. Still poisonous just not that noticable and direct. If the point is to not breathe it in at all, wich the point should be if you're doing a lot of soldering, then you should have an extractor hood aswell to take it outside :)
I can relate to this so much... I have been meaning to build a fume extractor but I only think of it when I solder maybe once a month or so. Of course I could buy one, but I know I could make one fairly quickly (and yet I never actually get it).

Awesome! can't wait to see it! to your question, my preference is to print a solid part. It uses more material, but it is easier to clean and I've found I've had less failures. So if you are looking to match the video I would print it solid. If you are on Instagram I would love to see a photo when its done! just tag me @art.jasonburns

Could you please show how the moniter and tablet are atatched because I can see they are both on an arm? I would like to make my setup similar.
I don't have a printer. I live in NJ. I'm only interested in printing firearms, but alast it's illegal to do that here. I'd be happy to buy a fully made one. Name your price.

Thanks! I've updated the description on the video with the parts list. There should be a dropdown on myminifactory titled (post-purchase information) that should have the parts list as well. I had hope to have a test doc in the zip file with all that info, but myminifactory does not allow that. I would love to see your print of the tray when it is done!
@@jasonburns-collective Excellent thank you! I'll definitely share a pic or two when it's finished. A friend of mine is printing it out for me as I only have a PLA printer, so unsure of timeline. Ordering up the electronics this weekend though!
@@Sporkedphro Looking forward to it! Also, just wanted to let you know that I did a test print with some translucent PLA and it worked! I will post some pictures to myminifactory soon of the result. For the print settings the only thing I changes was the infill pattern, which I set to gyro instead of the default. I've found that with translucent FDM prints gyro looks better than grid infill.

Agreed! I do not have access to a 3d printer and, while I am a computer geek, when it comes to doing little electronic projects...I have no clue what I am doing. I would DEFINITELY buy one of these pre-made. Please Jason...MAKE IT SO!!

Nice! I never had the original but I've looked it up and it seemed was way ahead of its time. I still can't get over that Orson Welles TV add for it lol. Regarding purchasing a complete tray, keep an eye out as I might be able to have a small run available, but I need to test some things first.

Depends on what you're going for to be honest and I do prefer everyt ime you get an ikea tabletop, I beg of you to put support in the middle so it does bow in the middle.

Thanks! I used Maya for the mock up and design for this project. Fusion 360 would be better for blueprints, but at the time I had more experience in Maya so I just used what I knew.

i have a similar setup but my tablet is to the side, and i can slide it in and out and use it as a axillary monitor to my right side
Nice! The one issue I have with this setup is that it doesn't leave any room for drawing with paper. Sounds like your setup has more flexibility for that!

I have the same model on a wacom ergo arm, but I don’t think I could get that in front of the main monitor like you have. Would love to know how you have that setup! Maybe content for another video? 😉👍
I have mine attached to an ergotron brand arm. To get the tablet to stack under the primary monitor I found an off brand tall monitor stand that had the same diameter mounting tube as the ergotron. This let me attach the ergotron all the way at the bottom of the stand and primary monitor at the top. You could also do this with a tall 2x monitor stand, but I already had an arm that I wanted to use so I opted to go this somewhat diy method.
