Climate Change and Gendered Vulnerabilities: A Critical Analysis of Women’s Health and Wellbeing
This talk explores the intersection of environmental changes and their disproportionate impact on women, particularly in marginalized communities. Drawing on a scoping review, Dr. Gulnaz Anjum and Dr. Mudassar Aziz present findings on how worsening climatic conditions such as heat waves, floods, and water scarcity exacerbate existing health disparities. Key themes include the impact of climate change on physical, mental, and social health, maternal and newborn outcomes, water security and sanitation, and the additional caregiving burdens imposed on women by social norms. The discussion underscores the need for targeted interventions and gender-sensitive policies to promote health equity and resilience among women.
This presentation emphasizes actionable steps for future research and policy, calling for studies that establish causal links, inclusive healthcare services, and enhanced access to resources for women. Advocacy for involving women in decision-making processes and designing climate-resilient strategies is also highlighted as essential for addressing these gendered vulnerabilities. This seminar is a must-watch for educators, policymakers, and health practitioners aiming to understand and address the challenges at the intersection of gender and climate change.
