At the beginning I was worried this was going to be one of those Dharma talks - the "be nice to other people, we're all interdependent" fluff types - but then I was pleasantly surprised when Sensei brought OtherPower back into it at the end. Wonderful talk. Namo Amida Butsu🙏

I have studied Buddhism for quite a while now and Pureland Buddhism really appeals to me,do Pureland Buddhists have to take formal refuge vows?

What a wonderful lecture! This is the best longform lecture I've ever seen from the BCA (as opposed to short Dharma talks). More please! I like the idea of death as the "completion" of life as a bombu. Namo Amida Butsu🙏

Each and every Pure Land tradition traces it's root to the Indian schools of Madhyamaka and Yogaćara. According to one of the fundamental Yogaćara texts "Buddhabhūmyupadeśa" ("The Interpretation of Buddha Land") Pure Land is purified, enlightened stream of consciousness. Because everything is "mind only" the answer provided by this text is clear: it is a real physical place (Transformation body of the Buddha) and it is not (Enjoyment body of the Buddha) at the same time.

Thank you for the message. I have been learning a lot through your podcasts and the recorded services here. Since this was your theme: Can you imagine the Nembutsu path without a temple? Or without community? I'm thinking of people who don't have other people exploring this path in the town where they live. Now that people are connecting via the internet to this Dharma as you mentioned - what's a good "place" for them to really connect? Many thanks again for keeping up these messages and teachings.

Thank you for your comment, Yotin san. Just an added thought to your question, which is that this Dharma message was made with the idea that peoples' connection to the temple might be getting weaker due to the pandemic (people who have access to a temple). But with the internet and social media, the sangha of the new age will most likely include a web sangha, not bound by physical location constraints. That has already begun to a certain extent. If you like, please check the BCA website found here: www.buddhistchurchesofamerica.org/ This has a lot of information that can introduce you to Shin Buddhist circles. Also try these: jsinternational.org/ everydaybuddhist.teachable.com/ Thank you for your message! Gassho.

Sensei, imagine the avidly-listening audience, focus on them, get absorbed in the content - and you will stop being self-conscious. I learned to speak to cameras when creating online classes a decade ago. Now, I feel the connection to all my learners, I 'see' them with my heart, and they are 100% there in person with me, no matter where they happen to be in the 'real world'. You can do it!
