I remember doing these 100 mile or more bicycle rides and the traffic on the weekend could be jammed up. especially on holidays. I was glad I was on a bicycle. I later added a Harley and still have that motorcycle to this day.
I am reaaly really debating whether I should learn to make this myself, or just go to Okinawa to eat the real deal.... Argh, I hate being poor.
saataa andagii
So not what it was when I left in 1981 so sad
Thank you for sharing this with us. I was stationed at MCAS Futenma 3 times. This looks allot different than the last time I was there. last time was 1987. Thank you again.
Thanks for this.
I was there 61 years ago with M 3/9 3rd Mar. Div. At camp Hansen for over a year. Although during that time we would go on a ship while on floating battalion to Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines. We were almost sent to Thailand because things were kicking up there. But anyway I used to pull liberty in kin village quite frequently. Liberty ended at midnight so it was called Cinderella Liberty. There were bars pretty much all over town. One thing I remember is that things were a little crazy then. Certain bars were claimed by certain units or companies of Marines. If a Marine from one unit would go to a bar claimed by another he would get asked who he was with. There would be tensions between them. But overall Kim village was okay. It was almost as hot and humid as Vietnam.
It looks scary driving there with the lanes opposite of the States'. I learned to drive there back in the 90s and I was comfortable. Now at 65 when I go back there to home base, I am kind of doubtful if I can drive there again. Thank you for the Okinawa posts.
Hello, I moved back to Okinawa after being in the US for quite a long time. I am so glad I found your channel. Please keep creating videos. I am curious about Futenma and being drawn to move there. I am seeing lots of cute restaurants popping up. :) Yoroshiku onegaishimasu^^
I enjoyed seeing your coverage of Christ the King School (CKS). Thank you
It looks like central Japan in the 90s.😐
My dad was at Naha in 1970-1971 (I was born in 1975) as a flight line supervisor. Since it became a civilian airport, i've run into people don't believe Naha AFB existed. Thank you for this video!
I miss my home... 😢 Hello Oshiro family... ❤ I love you 😘
Hello again….it’s great to see an updated video again. Hope you will add new videos this year. Take care and as always love your walking videos. 🎉
good video
Joy! So good to see you again! My husband and I traveled to Okinawa in August of 2018. We absolutely fell in love with the people and the island. I binged watched almost all your videos before we made a return visit in May of 2023. Welcome back❣
Have not seen your videos in a long time.. Happy to see again..👍
this is great
I am happy to be part of plaza house staff...
Add me to the list of the homesick and nostalgic. My family lived in Sunabe/Machinato from about 1961 to 1964, then Futenma from about 1967 to 1969. My childhood there holds my most cherished memories. Thank you so much for sharing yours!
I was stationed on Machinato service area from December 1975 to January 1977. USA MP Detachment Oki. Japan. It was an Army base then.
We visited Okinawa in October 2023, and so much has changed since 1991. It is still beautiful and filled with great people.
Wow, so much has changed. I lived at 933 B Futenma housing 94 to 97. Good video. Thanks
I lived there from 1958-1969 and went to Mercy Elementary School and lived behind Jimmys Bakery. Thank you for the videos!
Nice 👍
Miss it
Jo-TO!!!
Thos brought back so many good memories of my time out there. I was stationed on camp schwab right next to henoko from April 2006 to October 2008. I miss it so much. People were always amazing. When I found out the Marine air base was being related there, I was heart broken. It doesn't belong there. That being said, I absolutely understand why locals don't want Americans there, besides a long list of other reasons.
I lived very near there in Morgan Manor in 1965-66. I was in the fourth grade on base. I was there when the KC-135 crashed in the monsoon.
I know someone very dear to me from Ukan village Okinawa who lives in UnitedStates. I would like to learn. Thank you, bless you for teaching us.-John's wife
Agijabiyo - my goodness! OMG!
Uchinaaguchi is so sweet! Learning it through Romaji is way easier! Nefe debiru (hope it's the right way to transliterate it)!
Uchinaaguchi is so precious, I just hope they simplify the number of their adapted kanas to make it more practical or just use romaji, this way it'll be much easier to attract new learners abroad to help preserved this cultural treasure. Anyway, I hope Okinawans and all islanders of the Rykyu (Looshoo) kingdom preserve their regional languages for future generations! Thank you for being part of the worldwide movement for the preservation of minority languages! I've subscribed to your channel, giving the due thumbs-up on the video and sharing it!
Woww... tottemo kirei desu ❤💖💟👍
I love learning about the ghost stories of Okinawa. I don’t know if you remember, but I left a comment when you were giving a video tour around Naha, thanking you for going through my old neighborhood, which allowed me to see my old house from childhood. I have a possible ghost story or two about living there. Our house was right beside a tomb. The night that we moved in, my mother’s toe stuck out, and she said it felt like someone was pulling it. We lived there for a year and a half, and for that entire time, her toe stuck out and felt like it was being pulled. The day we left that house and moved onto the base, it stopped! She thought it was a spirit from the tomb, playing a trick on her. I have another ghost story but will save it for another day.
I wonder if the Condition Green club is still there on Gate 2 street. They had a killer band there by the same name in the early 80’s. Good times.
This brings back a lot of memories. I spent many nights out in Kinville. It changed so much from the first time I was stationed at Camp Hansen in 1980 through 6 more deployments there over 28 years in the Marines. A lot of those decrepit buildings were filled with Marines every night in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Then the dollar lost value and most of the clubs disappeared. I’ve been in a lot of the places shown, as well as the ones that used to be where empty lots and the park are now.
The beaches are so beautiful I remember diving and seeing beautiful fishes and what I believe to be a cemetery mounts if I'm correct
I was there a Marine in 1982 things have changed so much I love it there😊
Brasil 🇧🇷
I was a American Marine from. 2000 to 2005. I loved Okinawa. Your video showed the current setting. I miss being there. Im sorry shuri castle burned down. I might vacation there someday.
Totally cleaned up since my tour at Kadena AB in the late 70’s. Thanks for sharing!
The first time I swam in the ocean was at the beach in Kin Village, 1962. I don't remember the beach looking like that plus there wasn't any people on the beach. 1962 to 1964 was such a good time to be on Okinawa. I went back for a visit in 2017, and was disappointed to see how it had changed. Thanks for the video. :-)
Por que no lo hablas en japones ? Ya que el ingles muchas personas no lo entendemos y no se puede traducir.
I went to Mercy Intermediate School from 1964 to 1967. I lived about a ten minute walk from Sam's Anchor Inn toward the East China Sea in the Oceanview Housing Area. There was a Special Forces presence right behind the school. There was also a single quonset PX. Some of my teachers were: Ms. Bischoff ( who married a Major Clark of the Special Forces),Ms.Barnes, Mr Nelson and Mr Simpson. I walked or rode my bicycle to school. I guess developers couldn't resist the open playground with basketball court and baseball field. It's no surprise that this area developed into commercial space in land hungry Okinawa. Thank you for the update of this, my childhood stomping grounds.
Enjoy seeing my wife’s home area. Have you considered doing top 5 or 10 style videos? Like top 5 resorts in Okinawa? Or maybe a video about why Okinawa is the Hawaii of Japan. A video about the monorail system in Okinawa? Glad to see your channel broke 1000 subs. Hope you’ll continue. Good luck to you and may your channel grow quickly.
Very interesting I attended maki elementary school back in 79-81, I remember that river running directly behind the school!
Okinawa is a slum compared to the main islands.
I thought the same thing until I came back to the United States 😂
本当にアメリカと日本が入り混じってる異国情緒の街ですね。仙台在住ですが韓国よりも遠く同じ日本に見えません。いつか訪れたいです😊
