Herping in Spokane, Washington and stumbled across a terrestrial garter snake. The weather is being cool down, so the snakes are out trying to get as much food as possible before winter hits.

That's a female. She's beautiful
Used to catch these all the time when i was younger. Used to catch them and use them as fishing bait
thats a fat toad
The most evolved I think, their eyes are connected to the brain.
Even the little smaller ones seem to be "intelligent." Once they trust you will not squash them, they seem to jump on you to say hello. I have, on several occasions, gained their trust and let them go to have the same spider reappear several days later and jump on me to say hello.
We call them Florida tarantulas. They are some beautiful looking spiders.
No it's a spider they shouldn't be kept as pets
Oh fuck off the universe doesn't revolve around you, I have one and she is amazing.
This is the one type of spider I find myself fascinated with they are such graceful little creatures they way they move they way they hunt and they way they adjust to and adapt to being a pet jumping spider they start to make little forms of communication with humans and bonds they are unlike any other spider I’ve ever seen you know it’s freaking crazy when you find yourself saying damn that little spider is cute. They are awesome little creatures.
No offence. FK. Was going to ask you why you have a little spider. I have $2000 worth of fish tanks and sea monkeys and shit. And I thought you were weird.🤣🦘👽
I live in Australia Just found out people like keeping jumping spiders. The ones here are so cool you wouldn't believe the colours they have. There's a blue and purple one gets around. You just put your hand out and they will jump on your hand no worries. Then look at you to see if your cool. Praying mantis do the same.
Its screwed up how many people kill snakes!!! Im sick of it! Good work on educating these ignorant people especially in washington who think a garter snake is a rattle snake. I found someone on the spokane trail when i was walking it before that was ready to kill a terrestrial garter snake because they were convinced it was a rattle snake and had to save the little bugger and tell them it was a harmless garter snake. And even if it was a ratlle snake i told them if they left the rattle snake alone it would leave them alone. I know i changed there perspective on snakes wich is great. But to ever finds this video please please please i beg you to not kill or harm any snakes leave them alone! We need them in our echo system they are 100% meant to be here! They are not evil monsters they just want to be left alone!
My name is Lucas I am a spider…😊
Computer says your Rodney.
@@iancunningham941 you caught me :-)
My daughter and I have been looking around our property and local parks to see if we can find one. We have found many very cool critters. She has a travel sized microscope that we like to get a really close up look!
Best place to find these is in desert areas close to water I’m finding. Like ponds and what not. They will be in areas that have dirt and rocks and moist and dry spots. All of the above. I never saw a lot of them in town. Good luck! Make sure you subscribe. I will be doing lots of arachnid videos, and reptile related content. Thank you!
I found four of my bold jumpers under the rim of the trash can recycling bin and then yesterday I was ripping some siding off a house and found a beautiful huge tan jumper that now a new friend to my little collection. I’m not sure where he/ she came from because I originally moved a spider from the worksite and thought it was the same one but idk this tan jumper I got decide he would mission impossible down the door jam I was working in so I grab him up and put him in a travel container and took him home gave him a few fly now he’s resting in a web hammock he spun up.
I love jumping spiders, so SO cute!!
Thank you so much! Make sure you subscribe for more spider content. I will definitely be doing more videos on these guys.
i live in wa, the western side tho .
Nice! Western has a lot of reptiles and amphibians I want to find.
@PNWherping I keep snakes and ive mostly found garters and newts. I've found lots more than that but those are the only ones I can remember atm, lol
I live in the eastern side
@@idkffcc heck yeah! Lot of cool reptiles on the eastern side.
@@PNWherpingI broke down and bought a baby one because I love gophers so much lol. I've had many of them as pets my whole life. And I love to catch them buggers. We had a racer hiding out in our deck the other day super cool to see just hanging out. We have a lot of snakes at our house but no gophers sadly....
what kind of habitat do they live in? like under rocks by rivers?
@@zoeym101 dry areas where there is sage brush to rocks. Clay soil as well. Basically where I live in Spokane you can find them in the dry river beds or out towards central Washington. If it’s a dry area it may be worth getting a black light and going out after dark.
I had two of these guys. Mr Wiggles and Ritzy. I was a nature guide at a Ritz in AZ and I would stand in the lobby with one or more snakes as ambassadors to the Sonoran desert you could say.
That’s so awesome! I love showing people why I’m passionate. Good for you. They are awesome
Dude!!! That whiptail was legit in your thumbnail! I only ever caught one of those guys and it was in california i would chase them all the time for many years only ever caught one. Caught plenty western fence lizards and alligator lizards. Sadly only lizards i see here in washington are western skinks. Ive never seen anything else here for lizards and i go herping pretty regurarly. Sadly i still have not found a gooher snake yet or a rattle snake im starting to lose hope around spokane area
Look me up on instagram jefferyknudtson I’ll get you on gophers and rattlers. We will have to plan a herping trip to an area I know. It’s literally pretty close to Cheney. Also scorpions there.
@@PNWherping will do. Where I'm at it's great habitat for them I saw a few dead gophers here not too far from our house. And 1 rattle snake some years back on the road dead. Sadly it was a prego female very upsetting to see
@@PNWherping I couldn't find you on there I just tried
one of coolest snakes in washington next to the nor pak aka northern pacific rattle snake. gophers are so pretty i dont see how people can harm any snake its sad
Cool, looks almost blue on top... supposed to have those here where I'm at but I've never found 1
They are awesome little guys. Pretty damn fast though. Thanks for the comment! I will be doing more content in the next week or so. Make sure you subscribe. Take care! Happy herping
i know the feeling all to well nature is definetly good to get closer to god bro. keep your head up im sorry you are going threw rough times
its fascinating how gentle the scariest looking creatures can be. i appreciate your knowledge and love for these animals. ive always loved animals but had a huge problem with snakes and arachnids. id never hurt them or anything but WOULD NOT TOUCH NO WANT TO LOOK while in my youth. thats all gone now. i met a cornsnake that i swear loved people, a tegu was my friends dog basically. animals are cool. all animals.
I appreciate you! Please subscribe. I love all animals as well. Thank you so much for the comment. Seriously. Good to hear people that are open minded.
Красивая❤
I want to eat it
I had no idea they "musked", I would never pick one up so 🤷 it doesn't really matter to me that they do. I ❤️ 'd it's dramatic faces though, reminded me of a few groups of chick's I knew in high school 🏫 lol. They probably "musked" too! <wink>
Hey, I’m a Christian in the spokane area, I’d love to go herping sometime. Idk how to share contact info without the whole works seeing -so let me know?

I left my info for ya.
@@PNWherping thanks-I’ll look you up tomorrow. I hope you are well and find the peace of God that passes your understanding. We have to crucify our flesh on the daily…and the world is always telling us the opposite. 🌸
Are you trying 🤔 to teach " US" that the ,Great Basin Gopher, is " 💋 "Kissable "!?? YOU are one 😉 🤔 😜 Wild and Crazy 🤪 😜 Guy!!
I’ve been called crazy a couple times. I get along with snakes better than I do people. They’re fascinating. Thank you for your comment. Make sure you subscribe.
when i lived in california i found a massive rattle snake den there were northern pacifics in the den sight a few western diamond backs and a few southern pacifics it was amazing, another great rattle snake i got to grow up with a few of them were mojavie greens they are so beautiful just made me alot more nervous working with them because of there 2 types of venom lol
Yeah a bite is not pleasant for sure. That is super cool! I found a den a couple years ago. I could literally hear them underground.
@@PNWherping thats awesome. ive only seen 3 rattle snakes out of the 15 years ive lived here
that envirement looks great. you should try your luck by pine bluff when i went there back when i lived closer to there i found a giant gopher snake skin no snake tho. just a few racers that day. and on 7 mile road not too far from there i always see gopher snakes dead unfortionetly it is so heart breaking to see. supposebly we had a rattle snake here on our property not too long ago my brother said he saw it im hoping i find it ive been looking he said it was about 4 feet long so im definetly going to look around our rocks they love rocks and water and usualy dont go too far from there dens and if there is one im sure there are a few more very exiting stuff
Heck yeah! 7 mile has a lot of gopher snakes and a lot of rattlers. I’ve heard stories of rattlers. I definitely want to find some.
@@PNWherping just went out there looking today found a giant gopher snake skin but sadly i got skunked.... hoping to get back out there again sometime very soon
Awesome those used to be one of my favorite frogs to find when I was a kid. I’d love to know what are the most beautiful snakes in Washington state …also what are the large snakes I used to see by a barn in western Washington? they would Coil up and lay in the same place to sun every day, but were very aware and would never allow me within 10 feet of them.
Most beautiful is the yellow belly racer and the coastal garter snakes. My opinion. But I also love some of the Great Basin gopher snakes. I have other videos. Make sure you subscribe I will be headed to central Washington soon to find a lot of different species. Lizards and everything. Thank you.
Wonderful, nature seems to be very healthy there ❤
Very! Lot of life.
Es un dienton castor
would love too see some rattle snake content for sure if we had some in our area i would be catching them
If you ever would like to go looking for snakes I would definitely be up for having somebody tag along one of these times. Hog Lake is a really good spot for finding Northern Pacific and Gopher snakes
@@PNWherping that sounds like fun man. i like to do some fishing in between catching snakes honsitly haha i love my reptiles and i love to fish
sure wish i could find some of them up in medical lake area i cannot drive so i have to just deal with finding racers and rubber boas and the ocasional terrestial garter snake very upsetting that we do not have gophers over here
Medical lake has a lot of them! I have caught a lot of them just past medical lake. Walk next to the fields and stuff just outside of there. They sit in the ditch on hot days sun bathing.
@@PNWherping i live about 5 miles from medical lake in a giant field on 115 acres and i look all the time and never seen one out of the 4 years ive lived here alson ive looked around medical lake as well. i would definetly love to find some im hoping this is the year. i went out earlier and saw a racer but that was all
@@PNWherping im thinking i might try the fields by medical lake today. where exactly are the fields you are talking about? like over by water front area of medical lake?
todays a perfect day not sure if you know but storms and up coming storms get snakes on the move kind of like fish do when fishing. just the fishing go dead post frontal. sadly i have not done any fishing so far this year i had to sell my boat and there is very bad spots for shore fishing around me
@@PNWherping you ever find any over by turnbull wildlife refuge in cheynee i might try my luck there. went out today found a painted turtle and a skink pretty decent for all the rain. also found a dead gopher snake in the road on the way to spokane very heart breaking hate to see that
grew up catching them in california we had pacific gophers sonorons and great basin gophers.
They are awesome! Make sure you subscribe. I like catching the big guys will be hitting it hard next week. Should have new content. Appreciate the comment.
@@PNWherping no problem and that would be awesome to see would love to see some western rattle snakes if you find some as well those guys are awesome
my favorate snake right there never see any around medical lake area ive only seen a few in washington and all were by the spokane river
If you go up to hog lake there are a LOT of them over by Sprague and cheney area.
Do the males look like the females in the blue tale skinks? 🤔
Males typically have a peach or pink color on lips during breeding season. Kind of a blush color. Other than that I don’t know a ton about other times of the year.
AKA, Sand fleas. 😂
We call them sand turtles here you can also boil them with salt water and you can actually eat them they're really delicious
Pretty sure you guys have gopher snakes there in WA. The racers are western yellow-bellied racers. Nice looking racer, good catch.
Very cool video! I’ve never heard of these before, thank you.
Thanks for watching!

@@PNWherping subbed!!
When I was a young girl, I used to always see a near dozen very large dark snakes basking by a barn that was in an overgrown yard in Western Wa. They were always way too wary to allow me close….any thought on what they could have been? Their bodies were about 4” or mor in circumference, and their head would’ve been close to the size of a pop cab top.
Subscribe I will post more videos. We are planning on taking off. I am very passionate and will 100% be educating people.
What color were the snakes? Did they look like the ones in the video? What part of western washington?
I think I just killed a baby one:( I thought it could be rattle snake, and my cat was playing and I panicked at killed it
Education is huge! You now know. Look up the difference in heads between rattlers and bullsnakes. Thanks for the comment!
@@PNWherping yeah poor snake
Are they’re bites lethal?
No
Not any venom at all. Totally dramatic and make all that noise and the bite doesn't even hurt lol.
