Inside Showjumping: Jennie Sharpe on Weight Shaming, Mental Health, and Life as a Para Rider
In this compelling episode of Beyond the Stable, we’re honored to have international showjumper and para rider Jennie Sharpe join us for an eye-opening conversation about the realities of the showjumping world. Jennie sheds light on her experiences as a para rider, sharing the personal and professional challenges she’s encountered in an industry that can sometimes be less than welcoming. She speaks openly about the hurtful comments she’s received regarding her weight as she rides, and we discuss why these kinds of judgments underscore the need for the equestrian world to evolve into a more inclusive and supportive environment.
We explore the unique challenges Jennie faces as a para rider and how this has influenced her bond with her horses. She delves into what it was like to start over after significant setbacks and the journey she’s taken to rebuild her confidence. Jennie also speaks candidly about the physical realities of riding with a stoma bag and the mental and emotional resilience required to navigate her day-to-day life, both in and out of the ring.
As an active voice on social media, Jennie shares her thoughts on how platforms can be both a source of connection and a place of intense scrutiny. We discuss the impact that social media and online hate have had on her mental health, and how she navigates the pressure that comes with being in the public eye. Through her openness, Jennie highlights the importance of mental well-being in the equestrian community and the need to create a more compassionate space for riders of all backgrounds.
Beyond her journey as a competitor, Jennie shares her perspective as an instructor and reminds us of the joy and fun that riding should bring, regardless of the level you’re riding at. We also get an inside look at her meticulous pre-show routine and what it’s like for her behind the scenes at events. As she looks to the future, Jennie reveals her ambitions for competing abroad and the adventures she plans to embark on outside the showjumping arena.
This episode is a powerful reminder of the resilience and passion that define the equestrian community. Jennie’s story is one of determination, honesty, and a deep love for the sport. Whether you’re a rider or simply a fan of inspiring stories, this episode is not to be missed!

As an equestrian I feel like every horse/pony you have you learn something from them.
Whole ass mood, sis. Realised i was ace when i was a teen, was absolutely petrified and in denial. Im now more comfortable, not open though, and i often wish i was "normal" like everyone else bcos it makes nagviating things like relationships easier. I wouldnt change who i am tho, like deep down, cant image being allo, haha.
Such a grounded interview straight from the heart. You are a real inspiration. Thanks for sharing your journey so far❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 Jennie truly has such an inspiring story, and I’m so glad you felt the same! ❤️ It was such a privilege to have her share her journey. Stay tuned for more amazing guests! 🐴✨

I really like Jenny, when I have transport I will be back with Joey to her clinics, I first met her at your horse live, I completely get her feelings with imposter syndrome, and when my project horse flawed me twice over what was only tinnie tiny jumps ar her yard she didn't make me feel embarrassed or shit at all, it was his first time out and not letting the experience of blowing his brain get to me mentally is why we are now on our way to our first competition and have been out to camps and arena hires within the passed year.
That’s such an amazing story! 😍 I’m so happy to hear about your journey with Joey, and it’s incredible how Jennie helped you through those tough moments. She’s so understanding and supportive, especially when it comes to building confidence. I’m sure Joey’s progress is a testament to all the hard work you’ve put in together! 🐴💪 Wishing you both all the best for your first competition-sounds like you’re on an incredible path! 🌟
Thank you, good luck with building and growing your business and interviews, they're a great watch ❤

Rich is such an honest person. Meg says “brutal” but I disagree. What you see is what you get. Also, he gets to the heart of what needs to be done and can cut through the BS. I live in the States and don’t really ride much anymore but I love watching him teach because I learn so much! I may not be using it now but it helps me understand and appreciate the beauty of dressage. It’s funny too. I’m just as happy grooming as I am riding! Turning out a lovely horse makes my day.
Thank you for your lovely comment! 😊 It’s great to hear that you enjoy watching him teach, even if you don’t ride much anymore! 🐴✨ Grooming and caring for horses is so rewarding, and I’m glad you find joy in that too! ❤️
Great episode 👍. Miss Cooper Show ponies would be a good guest - different element .
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the episode! 👍 That’s a fantastic suggestion-I’d love to have Miss Cooper Show Ponies on as a guest! It would be great to explore that different element. Stay tuned for more exciting episodes! 🐴✨
She has Chester u realise

Loved this ….. I worked on a yard and did a YTS too x
Thank you so much! I’m glad you loved it! 😊
Justine's interview was great. I enjoyed listening to her life stories and what she's achieved. Definitely agree about watching other people achieve their goals. I feel the same organising clinics,. I feel like a proud mum with everyone. Great choice of people for your list to interview and I too think Simon is wonderful. I'm going to find Justine on her socials and follow. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you for your lovely comment! 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed Justine's interview-she has such inspiring stories to share! It’s amazing how fulfilling it can be to support others in achieving their goals. I’m excited for you to follow Justine on her socials; she’s fantastic! Thank you for your support and for being part of our community! 🐴❤️
YTS that’s a blast from the past!
Thank you Kate for being so open about asexuality, it doesn't get talked about enough and I could relate to so much of what you said. Great interview.
Jess is such a lovely person and so honest. Fab interview, thanks for sharing x
Best episode so far 😊
Your talks just keeps on giving Meghan! ❤❤ I love watching Kate! I really think a rescue vlog would be great and I'm very much looking forward to the Africa vlogs!!! I also love how honest and natural Kate is!!! ❤❤ Hopefully we will see a lot more Kate content!!! ❤❤
This was an excellent interview. Very much enjoyed the journey and wish you both the best.
Thank you for sharing about your asexuality and your pregnancy journey! Everybody is so different in many ways but we can always find something in common. FWIW my dad died when I was very young so I grew up with only a mom and I’m fine. My son had divorced parents and is fine. Ultimately the family we choose in life is as important as the family we are born into. Enjoy parenting, it’s a wild ride!
Thank you Katie for being so honest and upfront about your life. Best wishes with your pregnancy and all your other horsey/animal endeavors.
Amazing! This is so fascinating. What an interesting life!
Love watching Justine and could listen to her all day, I found her through Lucy. She adds so much fun to everything ❤
This was an interview I really hoped for, and it didn't disappoint. What a lovely, interesting man with a great story. I wish I lived in his part of the UK because I would be begging for lessons, I think he's so good with the horses. Great interview

Great interview 👍
Absolutely love Simon!!!!!
Great interview. Simon is so much fun to watch on other equestrians' channels. He is so knowledgeable and experienced you couldn't help but learn from him.
What a wonderful guy. When he was talking about his accident I teared up for him, you can hear the trauma. Love watching him ride, he's a true horseman. 😊
Love Simon, great to hear his backstory.
This podcast is totally cool. Your questions are interesting and they lead to interesting answers and the two personalities are just great. I very seldom listen to podcasts but this one is something of value.
awesome interview, it was so wonderful to learn more about Simon's life. He's a real gem!
Simon is very relatable, great interview.
Absolutely love Simon - great rider, and such a decent human.
Just love Simon ❤❤❤❤, He is a hoot. I enjoyed getting to know him on a deeper level. I've always enjoyed watching him teach the girls and ride their horses. His approach with youngsters is amazing, and I can tell he has a deep love and respect for horses. Also, it was so entertaining watching him turn 50 shades of red through the interview 😂. And yes Simon you definitely could have been an actor. All I could think during this interview was how much you look like a combination of a young Richard Gere and Hugh Grant. 😊 Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule for us! ❤ Best of luck.
Simon is so good as a trainer , meg elphick has been to Simon's .and I've also seen him on swipe up and kick on . With Tina and banksy ,Em and addey and also Lucy and Amber . I like it when I see simon teeching, a he goes into depth on how he's asking you to ride .THE exercise correctly .Thank you for sharing your day .👍👍👍😊😊😊
Love seeing Simon. Great interview.
Gorgeous human ❤
Again a really nice and interesting vlog!!! ❤❤ Think we all loves Simon!!! Just the engagement!!! ❤❤ If I was younger and lived in Britain I would beg him to train me!!! 🙈🙈 Never thought I would watch and certainly never dreamt I would be so fond of a bunch of influencers and their trainers...... 😅😅 I really are getting fond of you too Megan!!! You do a brilliant job of interviuing these people!!! I would have loved to se Simon help you with your horse and confidence too!!! ❤❤ I bet he can!!!
My favourite event rider, this was awesome 🎉
