SundayAfternoonModular

Приєднався 18 бер 2019
Making music for over two decades, in the beginning of 2018 I bought my first Eurorack modules, having some experience with synthesizers, but not with modular synths.
A whole new world and with it a massive playground opened up.
I then quickly figured out that the rack I bought was way too small for what I call my new hobby.
My collection of Eurorack modules since is growing and growing, and there is no end in sight.
After a year of learning and trying, I have started this UA-cam channel called SundayAfternoonModular, where I show modules, explain how things work, and also upload some of my jams,
and where, of course, you can join me for my modular adventures.
So if you want to follow my ride through a dazzling array of soundscapes, hit that subscribe button and become a part of my journey!

@@wolfgangdevries127 Oh yeah. Received the Solina yesterday, great stuff.

As a beginner (with a long love of synth music, but little music experience since high school) I truly appreciate your channel and its style and methods of teaching. I find the “sing song” quality of your voice (at least to my Canadian ears) to be very comforting and appreciate the channel and your dedication to it brightening my Sundays (and other days as I catch up on videos relevant to my own journey). Thank you!
Thank you, this means a lot to me!

I appreciate what you do on your channel. I struggle to use modules and sometimes I get so unhappy and frustrated, I don't use my modular for months sometimes. Thanks for your help and please don't stop doing these videos. There are too many videos on UA-cam that are done by/for experienced/advanced users. There isn't enough for beginners/intermediate. Take care and have a great day!
Thank you very much for your kind words!
Great Demo ! Thanks !
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video. It reminded me of why I didn't get Xer Mixa at first. Considering yet again how to upgrade from my Qu-Bit Mixology, my first and only eurorack main audio mixer since 2018, today I chose Boredbrain Xcelon. For me, as someone who comes from the 'last third of the 20th century' era of standards for studio audio mixers, my ideal for a modular synth audio mixer is based on two elements: physical immediacy and CV control. That will always result in massively multiplexed physical controls and indicators. Physical immediacy includes one-to-one mapping of functionality to hardware interface and in-place indication of state, both of which you commented on. CV control is what makes a modular synth main audio mixer... well, modular. Qu-Bit Mixology has both of those elements, but its small size and well-spaced layout precludes it also having other features, such as multiple returns. Cosmotronic Cosmix has the first element, but lacks CV control; except for CV over its two stereo channels' panning, it has none. Boredbrain Xcelon has it all. It even has per-channel peak indicators. The only penalty is its size. After seven years of doing more with less, I am ready to allocate more space for my audio mixer. Now I will be unstoppable. 🙂 Thanks again!
Great video! Loved the little freestyle! Wait, I just realized you don't have a 1U row, but instead use a converter. Am I correct??
Hi there, thank you very much! And yes, it's a 1u adapter from xodes.
Thanks for vid polycinmatic is my flavour this month .
I just ordered one because I want something that can sequence my modular stuff without having to use MIDI. I freaking hate MIDI with the burning passion of a thousand dying suns. So yeah I would have liked to have seen the MIDI jacks replaced with more CV outputs, but as it stands now, the RS-9 looks like it's exactly what I need. I ordered a Cre8audio NiftyCase just to power it and the case cost more than the RS-9, but I will have 32HP to spare for that Modbap Trinity I've been eyeing. But before I go all in on that, using the RS-9 to sequence it, I want to see how the RS-9 does with my Edge and Neutron. Fingers crossed I made the right choice.
Yes midi can be quite cumbersome. And modular cases in my opinion are far to expensiven for what they are. I hope the NiftyCase and the RS-9 work for you, would love to hear about it!
@@SundayAfternoonModular I've had the combo for about a day now and I love it! The RS-9 is just about everything I wanted in a sequencer. The NiftyCase is a great introduction to modular. We just don't typically think about it like we're building our own standalone synths piece by piece. But it's no different than buying a tower for your gaming PC. Yeah it's easier and cheaper to just buy an Xbox but a gaming PC is far more powerful once you've got it built.
For me, I don’t care whether an instrument/module is digital or analog. As long as it sounds good and does the job then it’s worth it. Neither is ‘better’ - it’s purely subjective
Sweet jam 🔥
Can you have it as stand alone like the beatstep pro , might be awesome with pulsar 23
Hi there, it's a eurorack module, so you would at least need a case with a power supply for it.
Exactly. That's the reason I bought mine, to use with Pulsar 23.
Nice organic hypnosis sir👌🏻
Great, terse explanations. Your voice accent and inflection are lovely.
Thanks for a good demonstration. Sounds ok. It's stupidly expensive for what it is. The first Erica module that I don't love.
Best/better is subjective. I ignore Black Friday, it’s meaningless to me. Play with your modular, when there is something you cannot do which you want to do, then you know what to get next.
100%
Did you keep it? I'm about to replace mine now as it has gone in and out of my two cases many times. I feel I gave it to many chances. Same with Bloom. Not saying that Qu-Bit doesn't make good modules, like the Data Bender is very popular, but these two are the only ones I have from Qu-Bit and I won't buy any more from Qu-Bit as those two doesn't work for me.
Hi there, yes I still have it but it is currently not in one of my racks. The scope of the module is quite specific, so I don't always have use for it. But overall I like the module and like to pull it out whenever I need some chords.
@@SundayAfternoonModular I got mine in my rack again and I agree that It's good to have and won't sell it because what I will get for it is not worth it. How I use it now is in this mode where I send the same pitch to each oscillator, but ever so slightly out of tune from each other, and make it stereo with a mixer. This way I get a better sound I think. But I will soon get another wavetable oscillator, the pianophonic from Knobula. Anyway, thanks for your reply : )
what is the octave range?
Hi there, the Solina covers a range of 4 octaves. Hope that helps. Have a great day, evening or night!
It is pretty big (52hp), I’ll have to get another 82hp rack and willfully force myself to fill the other 30 with modules to compliment the rs-9. Be ready to spare some elbow room for yer space 🫳🏿
Great tutorial, thanks for helping to understand the workflow. I’m loving the rs-9 so far, this is worlds away from the clock divider action I was trying to make a simple beat before with. Everyone needs to experience the 15:40 roller lol
Niiice!
No. Two of the cats are my cats 0:30
I chose the same faceplate option 😍
Fantastic demo video! So glad you're into it!
Great feature! Mine sounds great.
Thanks for the video. This module looks great. A welcoming different style of design 😇 I wish there were CV inputs for the controls though. Kinda defeats the idea of modular in my opinion. Maybe a mk2 version with CV inputs and it'll be an insta-buy?
I will conisder it on the SMD version :)
@@dj_doughy That'd sky rocket that module into modular heaven for sure 😇
Love hive mind synthesis, the guy that runs it is fantastic
Aw shucks, thanks!
It sounds nice!
The lack of CV control puts me off somewhat
tell me about it. I've been looking for something to replace my delptronics ldb2e with expander which I only use for hi hats. altogether 12 hp is a lot for just hi hats but with the expander you have cv control over the decay for open/closed hats. it's not an issue in my big case but when im trying to put together something portable(one nifty case) it's too much and i end up just using 2 pico drum modules. one for open/closed hats cv controlled by mutable branches.
Have you ever used any of the other M4TM/Hive Mind Synthesis modules?? Do you like this for hi-hats more so than say Prok HH or 2hp Hats??
2hp Hats has more control than this one
Hi there, first of all thank you for mentioning the M4TM modules, I definitely need to have a look at them. The Soda Pressed is my first Hive Mind Synthesis module. If I like something more is difficult so say for me. It depends on what sound I try to achieve. If I want to do a more industrial sounding track, need a hi-hat that is dominant and cuts through, a more typical hi-hat sound, the 2hp would be my choice rather than the Soda Pressed. If I don't need a dominant hi-hat in my track, maybe an ambient track that needs a softer, washed hi-hat, I would definitely take the Soda Pressed into consideration. The Soda Pressed goes way beyond a Hi-Hat module for me, with all the (reverse) swooshes it lets you create. I once created a Hi-Hat using the Ritual Electronics Krach, which also sounded very nice. This is why I have different hi-hat and percussive modules, to choose the one I think fits best for the sound I want to make. What I try to stay away a bit are 808 and 909 simulations. I already have the TipTop Audio ones, and so far if I need an 808 or 909, they do the job. What I really like are the drum modules of the safari series from Pittsburgh Modular. Not sure if they are still available. Again, they need to fit for the sound I want to create. What I can say about the Soda Pressed, it's a nice, refreshing addition to the drum and percussion modules I already have. Hope that gives you a good answer on how I see it. Have a great day/evening/night!
If you're interested, I made a video about the 2hp Hat some years ago, as well as the Ritual Electronics Krach. Ritual Electronics Krach: ua-cam.com/video/vBWRddCMkfw/v-deo.html 2hp Hat: ua-cam.com/video/A1sjPWCfDWA/v-deo.html
@@SundayAfternoonModular Thank you! Yeah, I stay away from the emulations too, other I do have the tiptop 909. I like the description you gave this, sounds exactly what I'm looking for!
@@SundayAfternoonModular Ok cool, I'll watch. Thanks again!
Still on my wishlist 🎉
Can be used as MIDI in clock and CV clock out?
Hi there, yes, according to the manual you can send a clock signal via midi or usb, and then use the sync out.
@SundayAfternoonModular thank u! I think i Will go for beatstep pro instead
This guy talks just like the guy from bag gear 🤣
Great video Thanks. Your Swede to English is great 👋
I got this mainly because it has all the trigger outputs, I still prefer the Erika Synths black sequencer as there is quite a bit more depth to it than this, but unless I get a second it is limited by the outputs, especially if using it both as a note and trigger sequencer. The behringer here is like the beer and pretzel sequencer and Erika Synths for complexity when needed, but it too at its basic level is easy to get started on.
Thank you for taking the time to record and post this. I appreciate your clear speaking and the pace of your illustration. I found this informative and helpful.
Thank you! Makes me happy to read such a comment
Appreciate this video..only one actually demonstrating its range and sound. Nothing beats Sine imho for bass but the wavefolding option provides room to deviate if needed. Thanks
Found your video that captures some of my recent thoughts. I am new to the modular scene and as I am building my kit I am facing similar design decisions. The feature packed digital modules sound appealing but you need a decoder ring on how to use them, especially when they dont even have a little screen. Also I am over 50 and honestly reading little screens in the dark is not getting any easier. I do strive to build a portable rig for events, even though i mostly use it at home. So I want to have as much capability as possible in modular form factor. SO back to what mixer should I get ? the Cosmix is an interesting alternative.
What mixer module to get, this is good question! I would say it depends on what you look for in a mixer, and at some point what your budget is. How many channels you need, mono or stereo, if you want to integrate FX modules for reverb, delay and so on, if you want to control certain functions with a CV signal, the size of the module, … This can be quite overwhelming, I know. The Cosmix Pro is a rather simple mixer, but does the job for me. The faders could be better tuned. A small change in the upper range can make quite a difference in volume. The After Later Audio Bartender might also be an interesting alternative. And on top it offers a headphone out which the Cosmix Pro doesn't. But I just have my Comix Pro connected to a Befaco output module, which gives me Line level outs as well as a headphone out. A mixer module I would like to try, but is just a bit out of my price range, is the Xcelon from Boredbrain Music.
Can you send notes for bass for example from triggers 6-10?
Hey there, the RS-9 is a trigger sequencer, so it cannot send notes. It only sends out a trigger signal, which has no pitch information.
Everyone else hates this. I hate that I missed the sale when it was $59. I'd have bought two. They've since been discontinued; I got one of the last new ones and I couldn't be happier. Going into an industrial/percussion rack. You absolutely were the one who sold me on this one.
Cool little modules! Not perfect, but at that price, no complaints 👍
Yeah, totally agree. I’ve just picked up a boredbrain excelon. The menu diving on the NE mixer was a bit of a turn off for me. Not going to lie, the excelon hurt my bank balance a little this month, and arguably it’s less featured than the xer mixer, however the simplicity of the design just gives me a little bit more confidence. And don’t talk to me about firmware updates either. You can have a module that is perfect, apart from one bug. Update the firmware to fix the bug, and the behaviour of the good stuff suddenly is less good. Annoys me no end! Disagree with you on the compressor though. I’ve just bought a third one haha. I’m not using a daw, so that’s probably why! One thing I am lacking is some EQ though. I’ve just been making do with filters as a poor man’s EQ, but would love to add a proper EQ over a couple of channels though. That’s a problem for my future bank balance to solve right now! Hahah
really helpful thank you
For me and my hybrid setup this is probably the perfect solution, I use an MPC for sample drums and to cover some extra voices and other modular stuff im missing, but ive never enjoyed programming drums on it. my mpc also still does too much This means i can program on the RS9 and record midi into the MPC for future sessions and should make it easy enough to swap between sampled and analog drums, just need to finish soldering my drum modules
💙
Does the RS-9 send accents through 5 pin MIDI OUT? Or is it just midi notes and sync? Thanks
