Making music for over two decades, in the beginning of 2018 I bought my first Eurorack modules, having some experience with synthesizers, but not with modular synths.
A whole new world and with it a massive playground opened up.
I then quickly figured out that the rack I bought was way too small for what I call my new hobby.
My collection of Eurorack modules since is growing and growing, and there is no end in sight.
After a year of learning and trying, I have started this UA-cam channel called SundayAfternoonModular, where I show modules, explain how things work, and also upload some of my jams,
and where, of course, you can join me for my modular adventures.
So if you want to follow my ride through a dazzling array of soundscapes, hit that subscribe button and become a part of my journey!

I chose the same faceplate option 😍
Fantastic demo video! So glad you're into it!
Great feature! Mine sounds great.
Thanks for the video. This module looks great. A welcoming different style of design 😇 I wish there were CV inputs for the controls though. Kinda defeats the idea of modular in my opinion. Maybe a mk2 version with CV inputs and it'll be an insta-buy?
I will conisder it on the SMD version :)
Love hive mind synthesis, the guy that runs it is fantastic
Aw shucks, thanks!
It sounds nice!
The lack of CV control puts me off somewhat
tell me about it. I've been looking for something to replace my delptronics ldb2e with expander which I only use for hi hats. altogether 12 hp is a lot for just hi hats but with the expander you have cv control over the decay for open/closed hats. it's not an issue in my big case but when im trying to put together something portable(one nifty case) it's too much and i end up just using 2 pico drum modules. one for open/closed hats cv controlled by mutable branches.
Have you ever used any of the other M4TM/Hive Mind Synthesis modules?? Do you like this for hi-hats more so than say Prok HH or 2hp Hats??
2hp Hats has more control than this one
Hi there, first of all thank you for mentioning the M4TM modules, I definitely need to have a look at them. The Soda Pressed is my first Hive Mind Synthesis module. If I like something more is difficult so say for me. It depends on what sound I try to achieve. If I want to do a more industrial sounding track, need a hi-hat that is dominant and cuts through, a more typical hi-hat sound, the 2hp would be my choice rather than the Soda Pressed. If I don't need a dominant hi-hat in my track, maybe an ambient track that needs a softer, washed hi-hat, I would definitely take the Soda Pressed into consideration. The Soda Pressed goes way beyond a Hi-Hat module for me, with all the (reverse) swooshes it lets you create. I once created a Hi-Hat using the Ritual Electronics Krach, which also sounded very nice. This is why I have different hi-hat and percussive modules, to choose the one I think fits best for the sound I want to make. What I try to stay away a bit are 808 and 909 simulations. I already have the TipTop Audio ones, and so far if I need an 808 or 909, they do the job. What I really like are the drum modules of the safari series from Pittsburgh Modular. Not sure if they are still available. Again, they need to fit for the sound I want to create. What I can say about the Soda Pressed, it's a nice, refreshing addition to the drum and percussion modules I already have. Hope that gives you a good answer on how I see it. Have a great day/evening/night!
If you're interested, I made a video about the 2hp Hat some years ago, as well as the Ritual Electronics Krach. Ritual Electronics Krach: ua-cam.com/video/vBWRddCMkfw/v-deo.html 2hp Hat: ua-cam.com/video/A1sjPWCfDWA/v-deo.html
@@SundayAfternoonModular Thank you! Yeah, I stay away from the emulations too, other I do have the tiptop 909. I like the description you gave this, sounds exactly what I'm looking for!
@@SundayAfternoonModular Ok cool, I'll watch. Thanks again!
Still on my wishlist 🎉
Can be used as MIDI in clock and CV clock out?
Hi there, yes, according to the manual you can send a clock signal via midi or usb, and then use the sync out.
@SundayAfternoonModular thank u! I think i Will go for beatstep pro instead
This guy talks just like the guy from bag gear 🤣
Great video Thanks. Your Swede to English is great 👋
I got this mainly because it has all the trigger outputs, I still prefer the Erika Synths black sequencer as there is quite a bit more depth to it than this, but unless I get a second it is limited by the outputs, especially if using it both as a note and trigger sequencer. The behringer here is like the beer and pretzel sequencer and Erika Synths for complexity when needed, but it too at its basic level is easy to get started on.
Thank you for taking the time to record and post this. I appreciate your clear speaking and the pace of your illustration. I found this informative and helpful.
Thank you! Makes me happy to read such a comment
Appreciate this video..only one actually demonstrating its range and sound. Nothing beats Sine imho for bass but the wavefolding option provides room to deviate if needed. Thanks
Found your video that captures some of my recent thoughts. I am new to the modular scene and as I am building my kit I am facing similar design decisions. The feature packed digital modules sound appealing but you need a decoder ring on how to use them, especially when they dont even have a little screen. Also I am over 50 and honestly reading little screens in the dark is not getting any easier. I do strive to build a portable rig for events, even though i mostly use it at home. So I want to have as much capability as possible in modular form factor. SO back to what mixer should I get ? the Cosmix is an interesting alternative.
What mixer module to get, this is good question! I would say it depends on what you look for in a mixer, and at some point what your budget is. How many channels you need, mono or stereo, if you want to integrate FX modules for reverb, delay and so on, if you want to control certain functions with a CV signal, the size of the module, … This can be quite overwhelming, I know. The Cosmix Pro is a rather simple mixer, but does the job for me. The faders could be better tuned. A small change in the upper range can make quite a difference in volume. The After Later Audio Bartender might also be an interesting alternative. And on top it offers a headphone out which the Cosmix Pro doesn't. But I just have my Comix Pro connected to a Befaco output module, which gives me Line level outs as well as a headphone out. A mixer module I would like to try, but is just a bit out of my price range, is the Xcelon from Boredbrain Music.
Can you send notes for bass for example from triggers 6-10?
Hey there, the RS-9 is a trigger sequencer, so it cannot send notes. It only sends out a trigger signal, which has no pitch information.
Everyone else hates this. I hate that I missed the sale when it was $59. I'd have bought two. They've since been discontinued; I got one of the last new ones and I couldn't be happier. Going into an industrial/percussion rack. You absolutely were the one who sold me on this one.
Cool little modules! Not perfect, but at that price, no complaints 👍
Yeah, totally agree. I’ve just picked up a boredbrain excelon. The menu diving on the NE mixer was a bit of a turn off for me. Not going to lie, the excelon hurt my bank balance a little this month, and arguably it’s less featured than the xer mixer, however the simplicity of the design just gives me a little bit more confidence. And don’t talk to me about firmware updates either. You can have a module that is perfect, apart from one bug. Update the firmware to fix the bug, and the behaviour of the good stuff suddenly is less good. Annoys me no end! Disagree with you on the compressor though. I’ve just bought a third one haha. I’m not using a daw, so that’s probably why! One thing I am lacking is some EQ though. I’ve just been making do with filters as a poor man’s EQ, but would love to add a proper EQ over a couple of channels though. That’s a problem for my future bank balance to solve right now! Hahah
really helpful thank you
For me and my hybrid setup this is probably the perfect solution, I use an MPC for sample drums and to cover some extra voices and other modular stuff im missing, but ive never enjoyed programming drums on it. my mpc also still does too much This means i can program on the RS9 and record midi into the MPC for future sessions and should make it easy enough to swap between sampled and analog drums, just need to finish soldering my drum modules
💙
Does the RS-9 send accents through 5 pin MIDI OUT? Or is it just midi notes and sync? Thanks
Shuper review of Solina! Thanks! Like, and suscribe.
Personnaly i would like more CV output, at least 2! Very often you will find drums modules with CV in
the RS-9 has CV..? ..I thought it only had Triggers/Gates..?
@@normdurkin6425 I know it's quite a long video. 🙂 At 7:30 I talk about the one CV output the RS-9 has.
without wading thru whole 27min video... is there any reason i need one of these when i have the BeatStepPro? does it do anything extra apart from 2more triggers?
Hi there, I don't think so, unless you want a module instead of an external device. There is nothing really extra, in fact the Beatstep Pro can do more, as it offers two sequencers and a trigger sequencer. The RS-9 is a trigger sequencer only.
Thing is so big
I think the accents are weird (level control and only one global accent track ?!). I was expecting equal triggers on the ACC and TRIG outputs and the ability to set accent patterns per track. If you compare the manuals of RD-9 and RD-8, the sequencer is more like RD-8. Otherwise the RS-9 is fun.
I think global accent is a 909 thing but yup should be on separate tracks for a eurorack sequencer.
Can this control a rompler if you don't want to go the modular route? Looking to sequence multiple voices off one device via midi
Hi there, this is what the manual says. I use it in a modular context so I am not too familiar with romplers. Hope that helps at least a bit. The RS-9 is designed to be a controller for other modules. Primarily this is by connecting the trigger outputs and accent outputs to any module that accepts a +5 V trigger and programming the pattern steps to produce triggers where required. In addition the ten ‘voices’ can be mapped as MIDI notes using the MAP function, which allows the RS-9 to control any MIDI synthesizer using DIN or USB.
@@SundayAfternoonModulari‘m having trouble mapping out the midi channels. all triggers just trigger the one misi put. hnnel i hve selected but there is no way ro play different channels from different triggers
I'm too stupid to operate the module (the manual is a joke) and I returned it after one day, so Thomann should soon have a return available for purchase.
Thanks 😂
@@jumpingman8160 😂
thanks for the review. i should have mine arriving this week. my last try at the eurorack drumming idea. lets see how it copes with the LXR and how fast it is to make creative things. i hope there is a way to keep tempo when changing patterns. Having the tempo locked with the pattern is a bit lame.
Just a heads up - you don't NEED a drum sound module with accent input. You can simply route the accent trigger to an entirely new drum voice. That's how I do a budget drum setup on my modular rack: I have the main drums on XODES kick, snare and HH. Then I route the accent triggers to a SoundForce LinnDrum because it's only $99 and has a bunch of drum sounds on one module.
You could probably use the accent outs to trigger even more modules
I never liked the look (those bright pads) of the beatstep. Definitely think the RS-9 should come with a small, flat case and a powersupply. Will try to make sth. like this myself. (If i like and keep it, mine should arrive soon). I wish you had tested the Midi Functionality too, i want to use it in a combination via midi for a Drumkit Multisample on the bitbox (or Blackbox) and and some Drum modules or percussive patches. Hope this works, will try when mine arrives.
Exactly my idea. a crater for the kick, lxr for others and a bitbox for sliced loops... should be cool. hope the sync and stuff wont be an issue as i doubt behringer will keep this product updates regular. Hope i am wrong. I might end up using bitbox via eurorack triggers instead of midi anyway for visibility purposes regarding mutes and alike. hope also that CV can be sent to change the slices on sliced loops on the bitbox, which is great for breaks and jungle. the idea that @vincefinemmusic said above is pretty dope too, to use accented triggers to trig other modules, the issue is that the sound itself will also get triggered, but i´ll give it a go!
@@eurotiumIts only a triggersequencer, no cvs. But the slicer mode of the blackbox has several random functions to play a different slice with every new trig. Mine arrived today, triggering a drumset multisample on the blackbox works fine, had to change the midi note mapping on the RS9, took two minutes.
Hey there, yes I can totally understand that a lot of people are interested in the midi functionality. Actually more than I thought. I mainly work with modular synths and CV signals, that is also what my little channel is about, so I tested the RS-9 in this context. I hope the RS-9 works out for you how you want it. Have a great day/night!
Got one preordered, for the price it was hard to resist, looking forward to trying it out.
This is one of those things ive wondered about for years. It's so hard to know for sure why people dislike normal videos. For videos that get 100k likes and theres always a small amount of dislikers like maybe 12k. That minority of dislikers probably doesnt comment at all. And the traditional wisdom of "people are just haters man" doesnt give any insight as to why people actually dislike past an empty generalization.
This seems perfectly paired with the S-LD module since there are no control parameters on it. I really liked what Tilt did with the Snare. Also seems like a perfect fit for a noise module.
So you actually do like the After Later Audio Cast Iron on it's own without any of the expander modules, such as the Bartender?
Hi there, yes, I like it as a simple, standalone module for stereo effects. The big value for me is that there is a CV input for the panning.
@@SundayAfternoonModular Ok, cool! Do you use a lot of panning in your jams? I was trying to figure out how to incorporate that. Also, does it truly turn a mono signal into a stereo signal? Thanks again!
@@alexandermontagnet3361 It depends on how that jam looks like. If it's just one or two synth lines and a bit of drums, I usually leave it mono. If I create an actual song, I record the mono signals into my DAW and do the rest there, as it gives me more flexibility. If you just want to pan different sounds, I would say a 6 or 8 channel mixer module that offers panning is the right thing. With the Cast Iron here, my idea is really to use it for stereo/panning effects, so that the sound jumps or fades from left to right and vice versa. What the Cast Iron does with a mono signal is to output the same signal on the left and the right channel, which basically is a stereo signal. (A lot of stereo FX modules do the same when you feed them with a mono signal.) But having the same signal left and right isn't very exciting if you listen to it. Where it gets interesting is if you feed the left channel with the original signal, and the right channel with a slightly modified signal, so that you actually can here a difference between the left and the right channel. Hope that helps! 🙂
@@SundayAfternoonModular It does a lot, thank you! Also, I didn't even think about using it with effects, great point!
Damm what a beast. After years of trial and error with different synths, now I know that the best setup is digital oscillators or dco paired with a good analog distortion such as the mini drive
I have 2 of them in a box waiting to be opened. Great demo!
Sounds powerful! Thank you.
You're welcome!
I've got one for White Noise conditionning :) so i can use it as shakers and hihats :)
I love these simple, little 1U modules that can fill a niche while filling an empty slot when you can't find anything else to fill it. I just picked up a passive Bear module on Etsy. Its only function is to light up when it sees a signal but it's great for when you don't feel like patching or repatching something else to make sure a signal is on the line while troubleshooting.
Where is that accent from?
I couldn’t understand your description of the lager version. Even with closed caption on
With all these cool dinky modules, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a line of all 1u case
Is there any way to simulate a rest.
You mean reset? I'm afraid that's not possible. If you need a reset function, you will have to go with another sequencer.
The kobol sounds great. Big fat tone 👍
To each his own, I happen to really like the MyVOLTS cables. I got in on the MyVOLTS Kickstarter so I got a bunch at a really good price in a lot of different lengths and colors. My rack is also pretty vertical so they lay pretty nicely. And more blinky lights never hurt anyone ;) That being said, I also have some of the Cre8audio cables and I like those too. Buy what you like and what works for you.
